🐾Why is antibiotic resistance in pets important?

There are some bacteria that can infect both humans and our pets. These are called zoonotic infections. Creating resistant zoonotic bacteria in pets poses a serious risk to human health. Examples would be MRSA and E.coli.

🐾What can we do to prevent antibiotic resistance?

Your vet may consider alternatives such as creams and shampoos to reduce the use of antibiotics and reduce resistance risk.

FUN FACT FRIDAY 💡🐾

Did you know?

Many dogs prefer using a certain paw over the other. In one study, researchers found that 34% of dogs they tested were left-pawed, 29% were right-pawed, and the remaining 37% used both paws equally. It’s easy to test this in your own dog. The next time they stand up from a nap or reach for a treat, see which paw they use first, and observe whether it’s consistent!

What causes antimicrobial resistance? 💊🦠

Bacteria can change their genetic make-up (mutate) to be able to survive antibiotics. Inappropriate antibiotic courses can allow these resistant bacteria to multiply.

PET OF THE MONTH AUGUST💙

Winner! 🏆

Bonnie - Bonnie presented with blood in her right eye, and lethargy. Bloods were taken which showed Bonnie was suffering from Evans Syndrome. Evans Syndrome is an immune-mediated/auto-immune condition in which the immune system attacks and destroys a patient’s red blood cells AND platelets. An ultrasound scan was also performed which revealed Bonnie had a bleed in her eye. She was started on steroids and cyclosporin(immunosuppressive) to treat the Evans Syndrome, and topical medication to reduce the pressure in her eye.
She is doing really well; however, she will be on immunosuppressants for a long time. Continue the great work Bonnie! 💚🐾

PET OF THE MONTH AUGUST💙

NOMINEES/RUNNERS UP🐾

Ben (photo 1) - Ben presented with blood-tinged saliva, and not appearing well in himself. He also had a strange smell coming from his mouth, and was not eating 100%. Symptomatic treatment was started; however, the problem did not completely resolve. An endoscopy was performed under general anaesthesia to check his stomach, and his mouth was also examined whilst asleep. A large laceration was found on the underside of his tongue, this was cleaned, debrided and a biopsy performed. We are pleased to report Ben is doing really well and made a great recovery.🐶

Billy (photo 2) - Billy presented at our Thornbury hospital as he was lethargic. Bloods were taken, which revealed an electrolyte imbalance. We were suspicious Billy may be suffering from Addisons disease. Addisons is also known as hypoadrenocorticism, is when the adrenal glands don’t produce enough hormones. Another blood test was taken; to check for Addisons, this was sent to the external laboratory. Billy was then sent home to await his results, with oral medication. Unfortunately, he then came in out of hours collapsed. He was treated by Vets Now our out of hours providers, with intravenous fluids and steroids. It was confirmed Billy had Addisons a few days later. He is now on monthly Zycortal injections and oral steroids. Billy is doing really well, well done Billy!🐾

Kiwi (photo 3) - Kiwi presented to us after possibly being involved in a road traffic accident, he was struggling to weight bare on his left hindlimb. He was admitted for pain relief and x-rays. Kiwi's x-rays revealed he had a mid-shaft spiral fracture of his femur, a transverse fracture of his fibula, and a pneumothorax (a collection of air outside the lung in the pleural cavity). A thoracocentesis was performed to drain the pneumothorax, and Kiwi recovered overnight. He then had his left limb amputated the following day. Kiwi stayed in the hospital with us for a few days for pain relief and close monitoring. He was a very happy smoochy boy throughout and is doing really well with his recovery. 🐈‍⬛

Why might my vet NOT prescribe antibiotics? 💊🦠

Not all infectious diseases respond to antibiotics, viruses for example. Your vet will consider this and not prescribe a medication that your pet doesn’t need.
