CHOKING- do you know what to do?

I had an incident this morning that got me thinking about how many people know pet first aid.

I visit 2 Pugs every day for a walk and wee break, this morning was the same as usual, I got there, said hi and gave them a biscuit each, today it was a smallish Markie biscuit that had been left by the owner, some thing they have regularly. One took his into the hall as he often does and I carried on getting the harnesses ready for the walk, after a few seconds I saw he hadn’t come back which was unusual as he likes to see if the other one has dropped any pieces for him to snaffle up. I walked into the hall and he was laid there, completely prone, he wet himself as I ran over shouting his name, but no response!
I quickly realised he was choking and must have swallowed the biscuit while, I picked him up be the back legs and felt his throat but couldn’t find anything, shook him a couple of times (sounds brutal but it’s the quickest way to dislodge an obstruction) still nothing so I finally managed to open his mouth and get my fingers in his throat, cleared the biscuit and within a few seconds he was looking at me a bit shocked but breathing well.
I decided against the walk and we stayed in the garden and the hall, within a few minutes he was totally fine asking for more treats!

I’m so thankful that I’ve kept up to date with my pet first aid, and for those that don’t know it the choking and CPR is very similar treatment to a child or baby depending on the size of the animal. It’s just a heads up really to say maybe you should consider a first aid course, there are loads online and most aren’t particularly expensive either.

Imagine this.
Your 3 year old child is scared of spiders.

Perhaps one ran over your child’s hand one day whilst playing in the garden and from then on your child has developed a strong negative reaction.

Now whenever they see a spider, even at a distance , no matter how small the spider is.. they feel frightened.

They panic. 😰

This fear presents itself as panicky squealing, flapping hands, running away and crying.

You are trying to help them but not sure how.
You want the behaviour to stop. 🛑

So one day you decide to buy a pair of percussion Cymbals.

You keep them ready in the shed.

One day when you and your child are in the garden you notice that your child sees a small spider 🕷 and starts to panic.

They start to flap their hands and squeal!

You quickly go into the shed and grab your Cymbals.
You creep up behind them and crash the Cymbals as LOUDLY as possible! 💥

Your child jumps!
They are quite clearly startled by the noise!
They stop squealing and stand still in shock.

Good, You think to yourself. Well that’s worked!!

I’ll do that again.

But then you notice your child’s bottom lip starts to quiver.
They look at you with betrayal and confusion in their eyes. 🥺

A little bit of trust. Vanished.

Why did mummy do that? I needed her support and reassurance.
Not for mummy to scare me even more.

You don’t care.

As far as you’re concerned the behaviour of squealing at the spider stopped.

And quickly.

Okay..

How unfair and cruel does that sound??!

The outward behaviour may have stopped but now your child is now scared of the spider AND YOU.

Now, of course, NO-ONE with any ounce of sense or empathy would do this to their child!

BUT WE DO IT TO OUR DOGS.

Replace the spider with another dog.

Replace the Cymbals with a can of Pet Corrector that you spray or a can/jar filled with pebbles or coins that you violently shake.

Or even a sharp sq**rt of water to the face.

Startle IS going to stop the behaviour immediately.
Of course it will! Its a shock to the system.

But the underlying emotion is STILL present.
And now, your dog is feeling scared of the noise.
And probably very unsure of you.

If the startle method is repeated, it will (most probably) work to SUPPRESS the behaviour that you don’t want.

But your dog won’t be ‘fixed’.

Emotionally your dog now has added worries.

Can they trust you?

Because YOU make scary noises happen. 😩🕷

Due to my impending cataract surgery unfortunately I’m unable to take on any new clients or book any overnight stays for July and August 2022. I don’t have a date yet but will update this once I know exactly when the surgery is.
All current bookings will remain in place, if you are an existing client and need any emergency or urgent cover please let me know ASAP and I’ll see what I can do.

Apologies but unfortunately this is completely out of my control.

Please, please don’t think that deaf (or blind) dogs are any more challenging to train than hearing dogs, I really feel for this breeder being misled by their vets.
