Here's a quick guide on electrolytes! 👇

What are electrolytes?

🐴 Electrolytes, essential minerals necessary for bodily functions, play a vital role in various processes ushc as hydration, blood pressure, nerve firing, heart rhythm, and muscle contraction.

🐴 They are comprised of salts like Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Chloride, and Magnesium.

Why are they important?

🐎 A horse can lose up to 10 to 15 litres of sweat per hour containing 10g of electrolytes per litre sweat.

🐎 Electrolyte imbalance can lead to poor recovery, heart complications, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramps and nervous system issues.

What are the signs of deficiency?

🚨 Obvious signs include: fatigue, muscle weakness, reduced appetite, dark urine, sunken eyes and reduced performance.

🚨 More severe cases can lead to complete exhaustion, colic, synchronous diaphragmatic flutter and can all be fatal if not treated.

How to get more electrolytes?

🧂 It's crucial to ensure there are is plenty of fresh water always available.

🧂 A salt lick can be an easy way for your horse to increase its salt intake on their own accord.

🧂 Supplements such as Saracen Re-covery Mash and Forage refuel can be easy and effective.

❗️If a horse is already severely dehydrated and not drinking, electrolytes will only further worsen dehydration and specialist help is needed.

It's going to be scorcher! Here's some tips...

1. Plan your walks:

🗺 Avoid taking routes that include hot pavement and surfaces, try to ensure there is as much shade as possible too!
🐾 Aim to plan walks in cooler times of the day such as morning and night. Always bring water and collapsable bowl too!

2. Use cooling products:

🐶 There are a few great gadgets you can get to cool off your pup! Cool pads are great, we stock Trixie cooling mats in 3 sizes.
🧊 Cooling coats are also great, the Easidri cooling coat is durable, machine washable and effective.

3. Hydration is key

🤔 Did you know dogs need roughly 40-60ml of water per KG of body weight?
🫗 Always have water easily accessible and take a portable bowl with you too!
💦 Consider trying wet food too, wet food contains 65-80% water.

4. Cold treats!

🍨 Dog ice cream and cold treats are great to help cool of your dog's🍨 internal temperature.
🍓 Dog ice cream such as Frozzys is great, but frozen fruit lollies can also work well and be cost effective.

5. Swimming & Sprinklers!

💦 Is there a dog who doesn't love a sprinkler!
🐕 Having a sprinkler setup in the garden can provide exercise whilst also keeping your pup nice and cool.
🏖 A trip to the beach can be great too, just ensure they are always supervised!

*Important*

❗️Please don't leave your dog or any animal in a hot car during hot weather.
💀Just "quickly popping into the shop" can be fatal. Be careful and time your shop visits.

Enjoy the lovely weather while it lasts and keep those pups hydrated!

Bodle Bro’s and Bodle Angling will be closed from 10am onwards on Thursday the 4th of July so that our staff are able to attend the funeral of our late van driver, Tom.

Q: I’ve heard Citronella is banned, so what can I use when competing under FEI rules?
A: This is a common confusion, so don’t worry, you’re not alone! There is a legal, but not competition, restriction on citronella. Under Fly Repellent legislation (Health & Safety Executive, UK), you can only sell fly repellents that contain recognised actives, such as Deet, and the legislation doesn’t cover citronella. The restriction refers to marketing the product as a fly repellent only. Citronella sprays and applications can be legally used as summer sprays and washes, and are safe and suitable for use under FEI rules.

Due to environmental issues, coupled with equipment supply problems, the following feeds with batch dates in April may take longer to soak.

Feeds: Fast Fibre, Veteran Light & Care & Gain

Rest assured, the formulas are unchanged and provide the same excellent nutrition, therefore the feed can be fed as long as all pellets are thoroughly soaked.

please soak until all pellets are fully dissolved and a mash is formed, we suggest making your evening feed in the morning and vice versa.
