We think that Max may have enjoyed his 6 month health check today with student nurse Erin 🥰 He certainly brightened our afternoon 😁
Its not always easy to get cleaning done in the practice! 😂
Meet Bill, one of two brothers who came in today for their castrations. They were both super sweet and wanted all of our attention even when trying to clean!
🌾 MEET ROSIE 🌾
🌾Rosie is a beautiful 4yr old domestic short hair. Today her owner noticed she was slightly unwell and started gulping/swallowing.
🌾 After a thorough examination, our vet Ellie suspected a grass blade stuck in Rosie's oesophagus. Rosie was such a good girl and allowed us to look in her mouth, but it was difficult to examine properly.
🌾 We sedated Rosie to have a closer look, and as Ellie predicted, she had a grass blade stuck in her oesophagus.
🌾 Lucky, Rosie had a very proactive and concerned mum, who booked an appointment as soon as she noticed symptoms.
🌾 Symptoms can include:
🐱 Retching
🐱 Gagging
🐱 Loss of appetite
🐱 Depression
🐱 Excessive salivation, drooling
🐱 Regurgitation
🐱 Restlessness
🐱 Trouble swallowing
🐱 Trouble breathing
🐱 Persistent gulping
🌾 If your cat displays any symptoms book an appointment with your vet.
🌾 When Rosie had woken up from the sedation, she already seemed more comfortable. She should be back to her normal self in no time 🐈

🦠 PYOMETRA is a bacterial infection that occurs in the uterus. Infections occur in intact females after they have been in heat/season.
🦠 The following video is taken from a 2 year old cat that came in for a routine spay (removal of the ovaries and uterus) but she had developed a pyometra.
🦠 Pyometra is a serious and life threatening condition that must be treated quickly.
🦠 The cervix is the gateway to the uterus. It remains tightly closed except during oestrus, when it relaxes. If the cervix is open or relaxed, bacteria can enter the uterus.
Clinical signs
🦠 Open PYO
Pus will drain from the uterus.
Discharge may be observed under the tail, or on bedding/furniture where the cat has recently laid.
Cats are usually very clean, the discharge is usually cleaned up before it can be seen.
With an open pyo, fever, lethargy, anorexia, and depression may or may not be present.
🦠 Closed PYO
The pus that forms is unable to drain to the outside.
It collects in the uterus causing distention of the abdomen.
The bacteria release toxins that are absorbed into the circulation.
Cats with closed pyometra become severely ill very rapidly.
🐈⬛ Fever
🐈⬛ Anorexic
🐈⬛ Lethargic
🐈⬛ Very depressed
🐈⬛ Vomiting or diarrhea may also be present.
🦠 Toxins released by the bacteria affect the kidney's ability to retain fluid. Increased urine production occurs, and the cat drinks an excess of water to compensate. This occurs in both open and closed cervix pyometra.
🦠 Treatment
The preferred treatment is to surgically remove the uterus and ovaries.
🦠 PREVENTION!! PLEASE NEUTER YOUR FELINE FRIEND FROM 6 MONTHS 🦠
