We had the pleasure of seeing Bella and Denzel this morning for a post op check and vaccine.

Poor Bella had a tooth removed last week as she had managed to fracture it. Fortunately her owner spotted it quickly and brought her in to get it sorted. As you can see, she's recovered well and ready for crunchy treats again!

1 - Benji came into us with a sore foot and when we palpated there was ‘crepitus’, which is a crunching noise/sensation.

We took an x-ray and found a broken metacarpal bone in his foot.

2- The solid lines on this x-ray shows the normal alignment that each metacarpal bone should take, then the dotted line shows the fractured bone displaced forwards.

3 - This post-op x-ray shows the foot 10 weeks after surgery and the body has formed new bone around the fracture and pin.

Benji is back to running around outside and getting into mischief. 💗

Meet Ruby, she came in with sudden onset squinting and rubbing at her eye whilst out enjoying a walk. By the time she got to us her eye was red, sore and she could barely open it.

We numbed her eye using local anaesthetic drops and could just see the very tip of a grass seed tucked deep behind her third eyelid.

Once we remove grass seeds our patients should instantly feel relief and stop bothering the eye. Ruby was initially much better, but the next day she was still scratching at it.

We sedated her to look further and buried deep down in the conjunctiva (the lining of the eye and eyelids) at the very bottom of her eye was a second grass seed! We could only just see it even when she was sedated.

Please bring your pets down as quickly as possibly if you’ve been out in the fields and they have a sore eye, sore ear or are sneezing a lot. It’s much easier to find the seeds before they start migrating off deeper into the tissues. Due to the shape of seeds (see the last photo) they enter the coat/body and can only travel one way - inwards!

Look how happy Ruby is now! 💗

GRASS SEED WARNING…..follow your instincts!
This large grass seed was removed from under our Rubys eyelid by Liv at Regency Vets yesterday, clearly still irritated today & a return visit with sedation, another one was removed. These seeds are so dangerous to our dogs health so please get any unusual scratching, licking, redness checked immediately.

It's not just dogs and cats that can suffer in this heat. Rabbits and guinea pigs are particularly vulnerable to heat, especially if kept outside.

Here are some top tips from our nurse Millie on how to keep your small furries cool and safe:
- Keep hutches/runs in the shade if possible.
- Make sure there is plenty of ventilation (either from mesh panels or, if housed indoor, use a fan).
- Provide plenty of fresh clean water (guinea pigs and rabbits will drink more if offered a bowl over a bottle).
- Offer fresh foods with high water content such as cucumber, peppers, courgette and certain lettuces. You can also rinse fresh food to add in extra water.
- Make frozen treats from their favourite fruit and veg.
- Freeze water bottles/ice packs and cover with old socks or towels (do not use gel ice packs as small furries are known to nibble through them).

Fly strike prevention during the spring and summer months is vitally important. Ensure their housing is kept clean and dry. Check their back ends at least once daily especially if long haired. Long haired small furries may benefit from a summer hair cut to keep them clean.

Millie runs small furries clinics where you can bring your pet in for a health check, dental check, nail trim and coat trim. It's an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about caring for small furries. Please contact us for details.

Last but certainly not least, we have Scooby - our security guard!

From his control room upstairs, Scooby has eyes everywhere. Unfortunately he's not quite tall enough to see the screen.

Good job his hearing is on-point and he's ready to respond at all times.

Day 3:

Young Squid is the flexible one of the group.

Always happy to show off his new postures, Squid's core strength is the envy of everyone at Regency Vets.

Even the furniture gets incorporated into his routines.

Achieving a meditative state is unfortunately still a work in progress.

Namaste 🙏

Rhu's main role at the practice is to supervise playtime.

As an experienced mother, with an empty nest, she doesn't let her skills go to waste. Whenever someone else is having fun, Rhu has something to say about it.

Much like her puppies, no one else takes much notice of what she has to say.

We're very lucky at Regency Vets that we can bring our pet to work with us. This week is 'Bring your pet to work' week so we thought we'd share with you how our dogs help us out when they're on the clock!

First up is Finn the 'Bin Monitor'!

Finn takes responsibility for making sure everything is being put in the right bin and no food goes to waste.

Whilst some would dread the thought of getting right in the rubbish and checking everything's in order, it's one of Finn's greatest pleasures.

Naturally with such an unpleasant task to perform, Finn's many years of experience means he's learned to wait until no one else is around before 'popping the lid'.

Meet Millie, one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses!

Millie grew up in Wiltshire, where her family had a menagerie of pets which was the beginning of her love of animals.
She studied Veterinary Nursing at Hartpury University and graduated in 2020. She has worked in Cheltenham throughout her training and since qualifying. She has since gone on to complete additional qualifications in caring for exotic pets. She has keen interests in diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia. Millie has a particular soft spot for sighthounds.
Outside of work Millie is currently in the process of renovating her first home which she shares with her partner Ben, Bean the cat, Egg the lurcher and guinea pigs Potato, Turnip, Sprout and Cabbage.

Meet Summer, one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses!

Summer studied at Hartpury College and graduated in 2021. Since graduation, she has worked in Cheltenham in first opinion practice. Summer is excited for this new adventure in an independent clinic where patient and client care are the top priority.
She has always had a love for animals growing up and would always find a stray or wildlife to bring home and nurse back to health. Her main passion is for in-patient care and as well as having a keen interest in behaviour.
Outside of work, Summer enjoys travelling with her husband, Ben, and spending time with her Jack Russell, Scooby, and Binx the cat.

Leading up to the bank holiday, we wanted to remind people that adders might be enjoying the sunshine this weekend too.

Adders are the only native venomous snakes we have here in the UK. You can recognise them by the zigzag pattern along their back.

They enjoy the sunshine and are most commonly found basking on hillsides and the edges of woodland.

We tend so see a few cases of adder bites in dogs through the spring and summer in Gloucestershire. Sadly, as dogs are inquisitive they can be prone to bites when adders are unintentionally disturbed.

If your dog is bitten please take them to your vet immediately. It is recommended to carry them to reduce the spread of the toxin through the body, if possible applying cool water to the bite will reduce swelling.

Once at the vets we will support your dog providing fluids to maintain circulation, pain relief and sometimes steroids, antibiotics and anti-venom if required.

The signs can vary from just having swelling around the bite, lameness, pain, becoming wobbly, to developing collapse, organ complications and shock. Luckily most cases when treated respond well and survive.

If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to get in touch. Have a wonderful bank holiday!
