Tick Bite Prevention Week –
March 24-30, 2024 ⚠️🪲
Protect Your Furry Friends

It is imperative to protect your pets, as they can easily become carriers of ticks. By protecting your pets from ticks, you’re invariably protecting yourself.

Tick Bite Prevention Week is observed every year from March 24 to 30. It brings to light the precarious health disaster ticks can cause. Did you know that around 3,000 people a year get infected with Lyme disease as a result of a tick bite? Lyme disease can be contracted through the bite of an infected black-legged tick. Typical symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, fatigue, and difficulty in thinking, which can persist for six months or more. Untreated Lyme disease can spread to other parts of the body in several months and can cause arthritis and even nervous system problems.

Springtime Reminder: Keep Your Pets Safe!
As we cherish the longer days and the blossoming of Spring, it's the perfect time to share outdoor adventures with our beloved pets! But amidst the Easter holiday fun, it's crucial to ensure our furry companions stay safe and secure.

Imagine the distress of your pet straying, getting lost, or worse, being stolen. It's a heart-wrenching reality for many pet owners every day. But there's a simple solution: Microchipping.

Microchipping offers a permanent form of identification, providing peace of mind for pet owners everywhere. The process is quick and painless, involving the insertion of a tiny microchip under the skin of your pet's neck. This chip contains a unique 15-digit code that can be read by scanners used by local authorities.

Should your pet wander off or be picked up, this code can help your pet return home. With access to the secure Pettrac database, containing your pet's details and your contact information, reunions can happen swiftly and smoothly. 🏡💖

Don't take chances with your pet’s safety. If your pet isn't already microchipped, now's the time to act!

Call us today to schedule an appointment and ensure your pet's protection. Let's make this Spring a season of joy and peace of mind for all our cherished companions.

Reminder for Pet Owners 🐾🌷

Spring Safety
Protect Your Pets from Poisonous Plants!" 🌼

Did you know that many plants can be harmful to our furry friends? Take extra care with cut flowers and houseplants in your home, and when planning your garden planting. Even seemingly harmless tulips can pose a risk to your pets.

🌷 Tulips may not be as common in your lawn as other flowers, but their bulbs can be poisonous to dogs. If your dog digs up tulip bulbs, they could experience symptoms like nausea, drooling, vomiting, and more.

As we celebrate the first day of spring on March 20th, let's ensure our gardens are pet-safe havens. 🏡

If your pet displays any of these symptoms or ingests a poisonous plant, don't hesitate to contact us immediately. Your pet's safety is our top priority.

At Arvonia Vets, we are always striving to provide the very highest level of care for our furry, feathered, and scaley patients. That's why we're excited to announce that we now offer cutting-edge Veterinary CT Services, including an outpatient option for clients of other practices.

Our GEC Lightspeed VCT 64-slice CT scanner is the latest in advanced technology, bringing precision and speed to pet imaging. This revolutionary machine provides detailed insights into your pet's health through rapid image acquisition. With each scan producing hundreds or thousands of individual frames, our 64-slice scanner offers a level of detail and accuracy that was previously not available.

One of the major benefits of our 64-slice scanner is its ability to eliminate the movement artifacts commonly experienced in slower 16-slice machines. This means faster, more detailed diagnoses, which allows for timely treatment and care for your beloved pet.
But it's not just about speed and precision, we also strive to make the scanning process as stress-free as possible for your furry friend. Our efficient scanning process minimizes stress, ensuring a more comfortable and positive experience for your pet. A scan can be completed in just minutes, reducing the time your pet needs to be sedated and eliminating unnecessary stress.

Our dedicated team of experienced vets, led by our senior clinician Richard Hillam, is committed to delivering precise CT scan analyses. We work closely with some of the country's leading imaging specialists at Vet Oracle, allowing us to send images directly to them via a specialized network in seconds for rapid expert evaluation when needed.

At our practice, we believe in a collaborative approach to pet health care. This means working closely with pet owners to provide the best possible care for their furry family members. We understand the importance of clear communication and education, and we make it a priority to keep you informed every step of the way.

Meet Arlo, a 5-month-old Bengal kitten who visited Arvonia Vets, Cheltenham today for a castration procedure. As with all our patients, we strive to provide the best care for them, and this includes making sure they are comfortable and stress-free during their stay with us.

Castration is a common procedure for male kittens, usually recommended between 4-6 months of age. This timing may vary depending on a few factors, including whether the kitten is spraying in the house and if both testicles are descended. Our team closely monitors these factors and advises pet owners accordingly.

One essential consideration before castration is the weight of the kitten. We prefer for them to be at least 2kg before undergoing the procedure. This weight guideline reduces the risk of complications during anaesthesia, ensuring the safety of our patients.

When Arlo arrived, we made sure to provide him with a comfy and secure hideaway. Cats, like many other animals, can get anxious in unfamiliar environments. Having a safe space for them to retreat to can ease their stress and make their stay more comfortable. As you can see, Arlo quickly found comfort in his hideaway and rested peacefully before the procedure.

The castration procedure for male kittens is a simple and routine surgery that helps prevent unwanted behaviours and health issues down the line. After a few hours of monitoring and recovery, Arlo was ready to go home with his loving family.

If you are a pet owner and are considering getting your male kitten castrated, our team of experienced veterinarians at Arvonia Vets are always here to answer any questions you may have and help you make the best decision for your pet's health.

Puppy Love Alert! 🐶🐾
Wilma and Patrick Take Over Arvonia Vets Cheltenham

At Arvonia Vets Cheltenham, we had some very special visitors this week – Wilma the mini dachshund and Patrick the chihuahua! These two puppies stole the hearts of our entire team with their adorable and playful personalities.

Not only did they bring us a lot of joy, but they also came in for their very first puppy packs. Our puppy packs are designed to ensure that your new furry family member receives the best start in life. We understand that welcoming a new puppy into your home can be overwhelming, which is why we have created a comprehensive pack that covers all their essential healthcare needs.

The first and second routine vaccinations are an essential part of your puppy’s health and wellbeing. It helps protect them against common contagious diseases. By vaccinating your puppy, you are not only protecting them but also helping to prevent the spread of these diseases to other dogs in the community.

As part of our puppy packs, we also offer four weeks of free Petplan insurance. This gives you peace of mind that your puppy is covered for any unexpected accidents or illnesses during their first few weeks in their new home. Pet insurance can be a lifesaver when it comes to unexpected vet bills, and we highly recommend investing in it for your puppy’s long-term health.

To ensure that your puppy is in good health, our team of experienced vets will conduct a full health examination during their first visit. This includes checking their eyes, ears, teeth, heart, and overall body condition. If there are any concerns, our vets will be able to provide you with the right advice and treatment.

Microchipping is another vital aspect of our puppy pack. A microchip is a small device inserted under the skin that contains a unique identification number for your puppy. This number is then added to a national database, making it easier to identify your puppy if they ever get lost. It is a quick and painless procedure that can provide you with peace of mind knowing that your puppy can be traced back to you if they were to wander off.

Keeping your puppy free from fleas and worms is crucial to their health and wellbeing. That’s why we include three months of flea and worm treatment in our puppy pack. We will also provide you with the correct dosage and frequency to ensure your puppy is protected against these pesky parasites.

We also offer a 10% discount on neutering for puppies included in our puppy pack. We recommend getting your puppy neutered as it can prevent unwanted litters and reduce the risk of certain health conditions.

To make sure that your puppy is developing correctly, we also offer a six-month health check as part of our puppy pack. This allows us to monitor their growth, detect any potential health issues, and provide you with the right advice for their ongoing care.

Additionally, each puppy pack includes a starter bag of food and a toy, as well as other items to help get your puppy settled into their new home. We understand that transitioning to a new environment can be stressful for puppies, so we want to make the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible for them.

At Arvonia Vets Cheltenham, we are dedicated to providing the best care for your new puppy. Our puppy packs are designed to give them the best start in life and provide you with peace of mind knowing that they are receiving the essential healthcare they need. If you have recently welcomed a new puppy into your family, contact us today to book their first puppy pack appointment. We can’t wait to meet your furry bundle of joy!

Today is a day dedicated to one of the most curious, unique, and lovable creatures out there - the hedgehog. These adorable spiky mammals are rapidly gaining popularity as exotic pets, and it's not hard to see why.

First of all, let's talk about their appearance. With their trademark spines, hedgehogs are undeniably cute. But there's more to them than just their spiky exterior. These little creatures have a round body, small legs, and a pointy snout that gives them an almost cartoon-like appearance. And let's not forget their adorable little faces, with their dark eyes and pointed ears that are always on alert.
Aside from their cuteness, hedgehogs also have incredibly expressive personalities. They may seem prickly on the outside, but once you get to know them, you'll discover that they are actually quite friendly and curious.

But perhaps the most endearing quality of hedgehogs is their ability to form bonds with their owners. Despite being solitary animals in the wild, captive hedgehogs can become quite attached to their owners and enjoy being handled and played with. They are also known for their gentle and calm nature, making them a great pet for children as well.

For those who are considering getting a hedgehog as a pet, it's essential to do your research and make sure you are prepared to provide them with the care they need. Hedgehogs require a specific diet, which consists mainly of insects, and their enclosure needs to be set up properly to ensure their safety and comfort.

On this Hedgehog Day, let's take a moment to appreciate and celebrate these amazing creatures. As exotic pets, they may not be for everyone, but for those who have the opportunity to own one, they are sure to bring joy, companionship, and endless entertainment.

Happy Hedgehog Day!

Our Story

Arvonia Vets was established in Cheltenham as a companion animal veterinary surgery in 1980. We pride ourselves with our relaxed, friendly atmosphere and high quality of clinical care. We try to spend as much time with our clients as they feel they need.

On the 13th January 2014 we opened our sister branch Churchdown Veterinary Centre Cheltenham Road East. Situated in the old police station directly opposite Tesco’s. At our Churchdown branch we host scheduled regular referral ophthalmology clinics that are run by RCVS Veterinary Ophthalmologist John Mould MRCVS.

We take pride in our service that we offer to our clients both here and our sister branch Churchdown it means that our family just keeps extending and we do feel like our clients are part of the family. We have a fantastic team of Nurses, support staff and receptionists at both of our practices and their dedicated service is one of the best. We also provide in house acupuncture and homeopathy.

We also have our inhouse osteopath Tony Nevin of Zoo Ost Ltd. Posh Paws Grooming is conveniently situated at the rear of the practice and run by Lynda.
