Icarus is a 6 year old Whippet that was referred to ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists. All of a sudden, Icarus was found by his owners lying down on the floor and was unable to move any of his limbs.

Neurological examination, performed by Emili Alcoverro (one of our neurologists), revealed non- ambulatory tetraparesis, worse on the right. "Non- ambulatory" means unable to walk. Tetraparesis means weakness (-paresis) in all four (-tetra) limbs. MRI revealed an acute non- compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion (ANNPE). This is a type of slipped disc which, rather than compressing the spinal cord, it hits and bruises it.

Treatment for ANNPE is not surgical. Instead, rest, nursing care and physiotherapy are required. Icarus was looked after by our vets, nurses and his dedicated owners. ACPAT Chartered Physiotherapist Laura Easton progressed physiotherapy treatment from manual therapy and positioning through to active balance exercises and use of the underwater treadmill.

We are all delighted that the lovely Icarus is now walking and doing very well.

Such an amazing team. Thank you for all your hard work πŸ’œ

Archie has been enjoying coming to the physiotherapy department after hip surgery at Chestergates Veterinary Specialists. Sadly, Archie became very unwell in June and required twelve days in hospital and medical treatment. He is a much loved Reading Therapy dog who brightens up many children's day as he go to their Primary School. We are all very pleased that he is now doing so well and has been able to return to his 'work'. Well done Archie 😊 🐾🐾
