***DOG CONFIDENCE IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED FOR BUSINESS***

Long time no speak, this is my final goodbye.
I will not be resuming Dog Training due to health reasons, wishing you all a wonderful life with your doggos.
Milo was the first dog I ever walked when I started Happy Hounds, my dog walking business. I then converted to training dogs. It is only fitting that this beautiful boy says goodbye with me as this journey ends!

Thank you Milo and Petticanwas Warren for the years of love and fun that I shared with this boy.

Signing off for the last time.

Hello all,

It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce that I will not be taking on any new clients, future classes have been cancelled.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I have had to reduce my timetable for the next few months, until at least Autumn. Existing clients will still be able to see me.

Wishing you all a wonderful Summer with your puppies and dogs and I look forward to helping new dogs and puppies in the Autumn.

All the best.

Phew! It was a warm one today 🥵

I said 10:30 end in this video but I meant 11:30 classes finish.

We may start them earlier on the warmest days or cancel if it’s too hot.

Well done all, you did great and we kept it calm and cool today 👏

Have a cracking weekend, we’ve waited long enough for summer this year. 😊☀️

It’s been a bit of a car crash week, lots going on and I’ve been away to attend a wedding.

So I’m back here in Tiptree whilst the happy couple are jetting off to Rome today! Such a beautiful city.

Have a lovely Monday with your doggos, I may visit one of our coastlines later as I need some fresh sea air.

It the meantime here is baby Theon and a crazy mum holding a camera iphone! Why not? 😜

SMART POPPY ❤️

Poppy has only stayed with me a couple of times a year.

I HAVE NEVER TRAINED HER!

She has a reflex response and she understands the cues I use with my dogs. She only knows a positive outcome to all of the cues. She is one smart dog, she’s so easy and so willing and LOOK … not one treat for all of those cues.

You can achieve this, Poppy learnt this by observing my own dogs and me.

Very little effort was needed.

Training only once a day for 10 minutes:

🐾before your walk
🐾before a meal
🐾with your dogs food
🐾on your walk

is better than not at all.

You got this 🙌

SALTWATER POISONING

Now the weather is warming up you may be thinking of seaside trips with your dog, it’s lovely to go to the beach for the day with your doggy companion.

I spend two weeks in Cornwall every year on beaches with my dogs. My eldest boy Theon is a phenomenal swimmer and love nothing more than to retrieve a ball from the sea.

Things to be aware of are emotional and physical impacts of a day at the beach.

If your dog is happy we th crowds and noise and lots of movement going on around then this is the place for him.
If not, then it’s good to have a family member look after him for the day.

Physically they may do much more and sleep much less than they are used to so do make sure you have them rest throughout the day, lots of water breaks.
Also, I would refrain from a walk 1 or 2 days after a beach day so they can recover. There’s nothing wrong with what I call ‘down days’, where we ask nothing if our dogs and allow them to decompress. My dogs have a couple of days each week to do just that.

Make sure they stay cool, windbreaks and parasols provide shade and screens from wind and sights for calm time. I rarely have a parasol but I do provide shade and calm times.

Plenty of water and lots of breaks will stop your dog trying to drink salt water and limit how much they swim and retrieve in the water. Paddling is fine.

This is my lovely client Claire with her mini-dachshund, she was having trouble with SIT, I suggested the mat and we got the SIT immediately. Sometimes we need to take a step back and think why we may not be getting a behaviour. Is it too cold, too hot, too wet, too arousing, is the food too stimulating, is the toy too stimulating, is the environment overwhelming or too stimulating, is your dog in pain, are his muscles tight? If you are struggling with something then think of all these factors that may be hindering the training.

Happy training ❤️🐾

MONDAY MORNING MOTIVATOR

I am always saying how much positive reinforcement is the best way to train our dogs but I don't expect you to take my word for it, here is a lovely video from The Dogs Trust, they have qualified behaviourists.

I have a level 3 in Dog Behaviour but I also like to educate you with people that inspire me too. I trust organisations that employ this method of training and particularly when it involves rehabilitation of rescues and giving those dogs a second chance.

🤩INSPIRATION SUNDAY🤩

“Here’s the thing: not only is it possible to achieve the results you want with reward-based training, but it can also be achieved without depriving your dog of anything - without restricting his freedom, without losing his individuality and without stopping him being a dog.”

by Tom Mitchell BSc BVSc MRCVS
VET BEHAVIOURIST

If this is what you want then it’s not hard to achieve, keep it positive, your dog loves you, you are privileged to have that beautiful animal in your life, treat him with the respect and love he deserves.

Happy living the best life with your dogs🐾❤️

Ok… I’m just gonna share this again so my clients and other people can understand what a balance trainer is and why it’s NOT balanced.

The trainer will stop your dog doing something with a slip lead, prong collar, e-collar, vibration collar, yank on the lead, you may have tried, shouting, a smack, pushing your dog, spray collars, a bottle rattle, etc.

This is known as an AVERSIVE method

The dog stops the behaviour to AVOID the AVERSIVE

Then the trainer may deliver a treat, good boy/girl, a pet on the head, basically something the dog likes when he AVOIDS doing the behaviour.

This is NOT positive reinforcement, it’s a dog getting something he likes, he’s already AVOIDING repeating that behaviour so the treat etc. serves no purpose.

Hence not balanced, just a dog getting something he likes, sticking a plaster over the wound.

Here’s some education on it: Edward Thorndyke ‘American Psychologist’ whom studied learning processes in humans and animals stated “responses that produce a satisfying effect are more likely to occur, responses that produce a discomforting effect are less likely to occur”, it’s pretty black and white!

Here’s an article from Victoria Stillwell

https://positively.com/victorias-blog/balanced-dog-training-theres-nothing-balanced-about-it/

If I had to think of an example of a dog that was truly "balanced," it would be a dog that - regardless of age, breed or drive - was confident, had been guided into making the right choices, and was allowed to think and learn without constantly being corrected.

I'm often asked how do our dogs know what are the right things and the wrong things to do and that positive only cannot work with no boundaries!

We do have boundaries, we do it through allowing our dog 'choice', the choice to pick something rewarding to do, the choice to not jump up as the human may walk away (boring for the dog), the choice to leave training if they want to. This is all feed back, your dog is communicating with you.

Force free means your dog has choice, when you pay attention and reward the desirable behaviours you will see a change in relationship, build a stronger bond, build a true friendship.

This will provide a dog that:

Checks-in (looks back at you)
Stays near you
Waits instead of running off
Asks questions
Comes back
Walks on a loose lead

The list goes on.

This is science backed by ethical studies to tried and tested responses.

Happy training and keep it positive!

YES YES YES 🙌 👏 💪

I’m celebrating as yesterday was a monumental day and after 10 years of campaigning, SHOCK COLLARS ARE BANNED!

I’m being very opinionated about this as my thoughts are that dogs are sentient and have a right to make choices and the dreaded shock-collars took that away from them, not to mention the cruelty behind the act of using one.

JUST TO MAKE THIS VERY CLEAR, I do not judge my clients or dog owners who have used one, I JUDGE the manufacturers and trainers who use and promote them.
