** Urgent request **

We have found of late that we have had a significant increase of requests via email to book in appointments and urgent enquiries. Please can we ask that to book in any appointments you call the surgery direct. We also ask that any urgent enquiries are called in, our emails are not manned 24/7 and have found that sick pets have not had the immediate care that they require and would receive if there had been an initial telephone conversation.

If you have any difficulties or disabilities that prevent you from calling then please do continue to contact us via email.

Please remember that we close at 12pm on Saturdays therefore emails sent after this time will not be picked up until Monday morning.

We appreciate your help and cooperation.

Devo was in for her free dental check with our nurse Shauna. 🦷🐾

Devo was very good and let our nurse Shauna check her teeth. Devo gets her teeth cleaned daily by her owners 🪥 which is easy to see as her teeth are in great condition and the daily tooth brushing is keeping the plaque at bay.

We are very happy with Devo and her teeth hygiene/health!
Devo even got a dental themed gift bag for being such a wee star! 🤩

If interested in booking your pet in for a free dental check with one of our nurses Kimie or Shauna, you can call us at 0131 669 3790 to book an appointment.

My name is Victor Bates and I’m a veterinary surgeon who’s been working within Abercorn Veterinary Clinics since 1988 (though I now just work part time). Together with Braids Veterinary practice, Abercorn provides surgical services for the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home (EDCH).

The EDCH has done a fantastic job over the years of giving shelter to pets that find themselves for whatever reason without a home. Through care, love, hard work, attention to medical and surgical problems by a committed staff, these pets can then be found new homes and given that second chance at a happy and enriched life. Remarkably this year sees the 140th anniversary of the EDCH! That 140 years has obviously seen evolution from a very basic entity into today's established professionally managed organisation - but one that still relies on charitable support and giving, just as much as it ever did. That’s where you the reader come in! Many of you will know someone who has re-homed a dog or a cat from the EDCH, or you might even have re-homed one yourself. I’ve just given a home to “Mimi” a sweet little chihuahua cross who entered the home in early May. Mimi is my fourth “re-home” from the EDCH. Each one has been a source of pure joy to myself and my family. Many of my colleagues now also care for “re-homes”.

So please; if you can support this fundraiser, then just click to start the process. However small or large, your contribution will help the EDCH and most importantly help it to help those dogs and cats.

Thank you!

Just like humans, pets need regular dental care to keep their teeth and gums healthy and prevent dental disease. 🦷

Establish a daily oral hygiene routine. This includes brushing your pet's teeth regularly with a pet-safe toothbrush and toothpaste. Brushing helps remove plaque and prevent tartar buildup, reducing the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. 🦷

Feeding your pet a balanced diet and providing dental chews or toys may help promote oral health by reducing plaque and tartar accumulation. Avoiding excessive amounts of sugary treats and table scraps can also contribute to better dental health for your pet. 🦷

Be aware of the more obvious signs of dental problems: bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums, loose teeth, and difficulty chewing. If you notice any of these signs, it's essential to schedule a dental exam with your vet promptly. 🦷

Regular vet check-ups are also crucial for maintaining your pet's dental health by spotting early signs of dental disease. During these visits, your vet can perform a thorough dental examination, and advise on further professional treatments as needed, and offer guidance on home dental care practices. 🦷

Stay proactive in your pet's dental care to prevent dental disease. Reach out to our team with any concerns! 🦷

Do YOU know what happens when your pet goes for a dental procedure? 🦷🐾

Let us walk you through the process! During a dental cleaning, our experienced team performs a thorough examination of your pet's oral cavity (mouth) to assess their dental health. This includes checking for signs of plaque and tartar buildup, gum disease, tooth decay, depth of any gum pockets and other dental issues.

Next, we use specialised dental instruments to remove plaque and tartar from your pet's teeth, both above and below the gum line. This process, known as scaling, is essential for preventing dental disease and maintaining oral hygiene. Our team takes great care to ensure your pet's comfort throughout the cleaning process, using gentle techniques and monitoring their vital signs closely.

In addition to scaling, we may also perform a dental polish to smooth the surfaces of your pet's teeth and help prevent plaque from re-accumulating. If any dental issues are detected during the cleaning, such as fractured or decayed teeth, we will discuss treatment options with you and develop a plan to address them.

Regular dental cleanings are an essential part of your pet's preventive care routine, helping to keep their teeth and gums healthy and reduce the risk of dental disease. If it's been a while since your pet's last dental cleaning or if you have concerns about their oral health, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with us.

It starts with plaque and tartar buildup, leading to inflammation of the gums and potential damage to teeth and supporting structures. Recognising early signs like bad breath, red gums, or difficulty eating is crucial for timely intervention.

Regular dental check-ups, full mouth assessment and cleanings with your vet are essential for preventing and managing periodontal disease, ensuring your pet's dental health is in tip-top shape.

If you have concerns about your pet's dental health, don't hesitate to reach out to our team for guidance and support.

Ever wondered what your pet's teeth look like below the surface? 🦷🐾

Did you know that dental x-rays are a crucial tool in assessing your pet's dental health? While a visual examination of your pet's teeth can provide valuable information, it often only reveals part of the picture.

Dental x-rays allow veterinarians to see below the gum line, where many dental issues hide from plain sight. This is especially important for our feline friends, as dental problems in cats are often more subtle and harder to detect without x-rays. Cats are masters at hiding signs of pain or discomfort, and dental issues can progress silently until they become severe. Dental x-rays help identify problems such as tooth root abscesses, resorptive lesions, and bone loss that may not be apparent during a physical exam alone.

By providing a comprehensive view of your pet's oral health, dental x-rays enable vets to diagnose dental issues early, before they progress to more advanced stages. Early detection allows for prompt treatment, which can alleviate pain, prevent further complications, and improve your pet's quality of life.

If your pet is due for a dental exam or you have concerns about their dental health, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with us!

How YOU can spot build up on your pets' teeth 🦷🐾

Did you know that plaque and tartar buildup can lead to serious dental issues in pets? Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, can accumulate on your pet's teeth within hours of eating. Over time, if not removed through regular brushing or professional cleanings, plaque hardens into tartar, which can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and other dental problems.

Signs of plaque and tartar buildup include bad breath, yellow or brown discolouration on the teeth, swollen or bleeding gums, difficulty eating or chewing, and very rarely changes in behaviour such as pawing at the mouth or reluctance to play with chew toys.

If you notice any of these signs, it's essential to schedule a dental exam with your vet promptly. Early detection and treatment of dental issues can prevent pain, discomfort, and more severe health problems down the line.

Remember, prevention is key when it comes to dental health! By brushing your pet's teeth regularly, providing dental chews or toys, and scheduling annual dental check-ups, you can help prevent plaque and tartar buildup and ensure your pet's teeth and gums stay healthy for years to come.
