The Edinburgh Cat Protection League was established over 80 years ago by a group of Edinburgh ladies who became concerned about the number of stray and unwanted cats in the city. They set up premises in Stockbridge and ultimately here in Leith at the present premises. We are a stand alone, self-funding Scottish Charity dedicated to the welfare of stray cats or cats that can no longer remain with t

heir present owner. The League is run by a voluntary Committee and is staffed by 2 animal care workers, Luke and Kim.

We regret that we will be unable to take in any more cats for the rest of this month. We will update on here as the situation changes. Like many other animal rescues, we have been very busy and have had a higher volume of cats being surrendered to us than ones being homed.

Zola is 3 years old and will need access to a garden once she has settled into her new home.

Zola is a nice little cat once she gets to know you - she can be a little spicy in new situations or if something alarms her (or if she thinks you want her food!). She enjoys company but is also quite independent.

She would need to be the only pet and it would be best if she lived in an adult only home.

If you would like more information about our homing process, please phone us on 0131 554 5521 Mon - Fri 10 - 5, Sat 10 - 4

Pippa is almost 9 years old and is looking for a home where she will eventually have access to a garden after a suitable settling in period.

Pippa will need a home where she is the only pet, as she does not like other cats or dogs. She could live with children over 10 years old.

Pippa is very sweet and she is very playful - she loves catnip and anything she can chase.

If you would like more information about our homing process, please phone us on 0131 554 5521 Mon - Fri 10 - 5, Sat 10 - 4

Tom is approximately 10 years old and is looking for an indoor home, where he is the only pet.

Tom is FIV positive (https://icatcare.org/advice/feline-immunodeficiency-virus-fiv/) and will have to remain an indoor cat. With the right enrichment, he will be perfectly happy as an indoor cat.

Tom is friendly and may be able to live with older children.

Please contact the shelter on 0131 554 5521 for more information on our homing process

Spud is 7 years old. He would like a home where he has access to a garden.
He will need to be the only pet and probably best suited to a home with no children.
If you would like any more information, please call the shelter on 0131 554 5521

We have had an increase in the number of people surrendering cats asking us to pass on their details to a new owner. While we can, and have in the past, offered the details to new owners, it is entirely up to them if they should get in touch. We appreciate how upsetting rehoming a pet is, but when you give them up to be rehomed, you are also giving up the right to input into their upkeep, to have updates, photographs, etc. We don't have to give updates on cats while they are in the shelter to previous owners but do as a curtesy. With all this in mind, and the awkward situations it can create, we are no longer going to accept requests for new owners to keep in touch with previous owners - it isn't even in our admission terms and agreements that we will do so. It may seem like an unkindness on our part, but think about how you'd feel if someone was asking about your pet continuously, demanding updates, demanding photographs, telling you what you should and shouldn't feed them, etc. It also isn't fair that previous owners will be under the impression that they will continue to play a role in the animal they surrendered, which cannot, and never have guaranteed.

From Monday, 6th May, we will be open 10am - 5pm every day apart from Saturdays (4pm) and Sundays (Closed) :)

Our phoneline has been restored! 🥳

17/04/2024

We are having some problems with our phones at the moment - people are trying to call, but the phones aren't ringing at our end and it sounds like the phone is ringing out to the caller :(

Please contact us via Messenger or on [email protected] for any queries about homing cats, etc. You can send your number and I will call you back on another line.

We apologise and will work to get this rectified as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience

We have changed the way we home cats a little over the past few weeks.

We have changed from paper only to a digital system - this is much better for protecting the privacy of people surrendering cats, and those adopting them. In the future, it will also make looking up details of cats that have already been adopted when we need to find notes for vets, insurance companies, etc.

The new system also allows us to coordinate better and know who is coming in. We are no longer just booking people into a diary. You need to phone us and register your details - this is for surrendering and adopting a cat. We need a name, address and contact number. We also need adopters to bring proof of id and address - in cases of renters, we need to see something from your landlord/letting agent that confirms you are actually allowed a pet in the property. We can also operate a waiting list of sorts now when people are looking for something specific - if they have other pets, children, etc.

Our terms and conditions have been updated as well. If you would like a copy emailed to you prior to an appointment, please let us know and please read them carefully.

All changes made are to benefit the cats in our care - despite a couple of negative comments, we're really not trying to be difficult! On the contrary, we are able to take more details and the process is all very clear. We all want what is best for the cats and to match them with the best home for them.

Due to staff illness, we will be closed on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th February. Our normals hours will resume on Wednesday. We shall keep you updated if anything changes. In the meantime, send healing vibes to our poorly staff member and enjoy a photo of a cat who doesn’t find it creepy at all that he’s being photographed while sleeping

After going missing from his home back in November, Rajah made an appearance 5 miles away towards the Drum Brae area! Thankfully he was microchipped and we were able to contact his owners, who are over the moon to have him home.
We’re not sure how he got so far from home - he may have jumped in the back of a van, hopefully it was not someone who just fancied an exotic looking cat and deliberately took him. It is important to keep your cat’s microchip details up to date - for whatever reason he ended up coming to the shelter, had his details not been up today date, it would have been unlikely that we would have found his family.
