🐕🐕 let's talk puppy vaccines 💉

We all want the best for our dogs, especially when it comes to keeping them healthy, we know there is a lot of information about vaccines and it can become very confusing so we are here to break it down for you.

Vaccinations are needed to

✅️Protect our dogs from nasty, life-threatening diseases

✅️Give peace of mind

✅️Create or boost our dogs' immunity to certain diseases

✅️Prevent our pets from passing on a disease such as Leptospirosis, which can be passed from animals to people

Sadly, a lot of the diseases our dogs can catch if they aren’t vaccinated are fatal in most cases. Even if your dog catches one and is able to recover, they will often be left with long-term problems, which can put them through a lot of pain and distress and leave you with some costly vet bills.

What's vaccines cover-

Dogs 🐕
● Leptospirosis
●parvovirus
●Canine distemper
● hepatitis

Our dogs should be vaccinated while they are young to protect them. Vaccination courses for puppies start from around eight to ten weeks old, and a second vaccine will be required 2-4 weeks later. After their first course, your dog will need yearly boosters to keep them protected.

If your dogs need vaccinating, or you need more information, feel free to call our reception team on ☎️0208 5336554 ☎️

What is kennel cough ?

Kennel cough is the common name given to infectious bronchitis in dogs.
a number of different bacterias and viruses can cause the illness – normally a combination of both. It affects their respiratory system, causing them to cough.

The most obvious symptom of kennel cough is
a forceful, hacking cough, which will often sound like your dog has something stuck in their throat. The cough can be dry and hoarse or productive, in which case it can be followed by a gag, swallowing motion, or the production of mucus.

Kennel cough is airborne and highly contagious, which is why it can spread through kennels quickly. It is also transmitted with bacteria on toys, food bowls, or other shared objects.

If your dog needs their kennel cough vaccine call is on 0208 5336554 our reception team will be more then happy to help

Are your rabbits up to date with vaccinations ?
🐇🐇

We recommend that rabbits are regularly vaccinated to protect them against three potentially deadly diseases:

🐰 myxomatosis
🐰haemorrhagic disease 1 (rhd1)
🐰haemorrhagic disease 2 (rhd 2)

A rabbits first vaccination should be at around 5-7 weeks of age. After that, they should have a booster injection every year. 💉

We even recommend vaccinating all pet rabbits, including house rabbits.

🐈‍⬛️Are your cats up to date with vaccinations ?🐈‍⬛️

Vaccinating your cat protects them from a range of serious diseases.

Cats are commonly vaccinated against:

🐈 flu (feline herpes virus and feline calicivirus)

🐈 infectious enteritis

🐈 leukaemia virus

Kittens can be vaccinated from around eight weeks old. Two vaccines are usually needed – three to four weeks apart. 💉
to make sure kittens are well protected. A booster vaccine should also be given one year later to keep immunity levels high. 🩺

🦷Dental work 🦷

A routine dental cleaning involves a thorough dental examination, followed by a dental scaling and polishing to remove the plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces. 🦷
pre- anesthetic blood tests are performed prior to dental treatment to ensure that kidney and liver function are satisfactory for anesthesia. 💉

The mouth will be thoroughly examined, noting the alignment of the teeth and the extent of tartar accumulation both above and below the gumline.
X-rays to assess the viability of the tooth root and surrounding bone will also be performed. 🩻
If periodontal disease (gum disease) is severe, it may not be possible to save the affected teeth. Depending on the tooth, extraction may be the only option. 🦷

Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen. Over 80% of dogs and 70% of cats over the age of three have active dental disease. 🐕🐈

Few pets show obvious signs of dental disease, so it is up to the family and us to uncover this hidden and often painful condition.

If you would like to book a dental examination why not give the reception team a call where they will be happy to book you in

As the weather gets warmer, allergies get more common.

Environmental factors can cause redness, itching, scratching, rubbing and sore spots. In dogs, the most common symptom associated with allergies is itchy skin, either localized (in one area) or generalized (all over the body). In other cases, the allergic symptoms affect the digestive system, resulting in vomiting and diarrhea.

Unfortunately, allergies are quite common in dogs of all breeds and backgrounds. Most allergies appear after six months of age, with most affected dogs over one or two years.

Did you know that at Hackney, we have some of the latest top-quality diagnostic equipment
This includes x-rays.

X-ray (or radiography) is a diagnostic procedure that allows us to see inside your pet’s body to assess their bones and organs for any issues or diseases. X-ray is a commonly used imaging technique that helps provide vets with more information to help us learn about what is going on inside a dog or cat.

Don't forget we are here for all your surgical and non surgical needs.

🐾Female cat neutering🐾

Spaying is the common term used to describe the surgical procedure known as an ovariohysterectomy. In this procedure, the ovaries and uterus are removed completely in order to sterilise a female cat.🐈

It is recommended that all non-breeding cats be spayed. Several health benefits are associated with spaying your cat.

1. Decreases tumour risk - mammary tumours

2. Keeps infections at bay - pyometra

3. Eliminates unwanted behaviour - urinating in doors

4. Reduces some risky behaviour - less chance orlf roaming

5. Improves life expectancy - lives longer

The most obvious benefit is the prevention of unplanned pregnancies. There is no behavioural, medical, or scientific reason for letting your cat have a litter before she is spayed.

Don't forget we are here to help, if you need more information or to book an appointment call us on 📞0208 5336554📞

Laboratory work is such an important part of our job. Our aim is to support you and your pets to help them live happier, healthier lives.

A consultantation and examination with our veterinary surgeons is a great way to determine how healthy your pet is, but sometimes, we require confirmation of a suspected disease or condition by looking at your pet's bloods 🩸

Blood tests allow us to capture a full view of how your pet's internal organs are functioning, allowing a clearer picture of your pet's overall health and provide us with key indications for many organs and functions. 💉

Blood testing can be extremely beneficial in monitoring the function of your pet’s internal organs, allowing us to identify problems in their earliest stages. 🩺

At Hackey, we have all the machines to run blood tests on site, delivering your results much quicker.
On some occasions, an external lab is needed. These bloods are collected by a courier and taken to the lab where the tests are run and then delivered back to us.🐾

⚠️Did you know that it's a legal requirement for dogs and cats to be microchipped.

What is a microchip

A microchip is a small device implanted between the shoulder blades of an animal that is used for permanent identification. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and can be read by a microchip scanner and matched to the owner's contact details, which are kept on a national database.

The microchip implanted in your dog/cat has no battery and no internal power source; it sits inertly in the dog/cat until it is read by a microchip scanner.

🐾 Male cat neutering🐾

Castration is a surgical procedure, undertaken male cats from reproducing. In males (toms) the testicles are removed – this is the main source of the hormone testosterone, so levels of this hormone fall after the surgery.

There are many benefits to neutering a male cat such as
🩺Reduces roaming away from home

🩺Reduces the chance of being hit by a car

🩺Reduces fighting and aggression

🩺Reduces the chance of contracting Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)

🩺Prevents testicular cancer

🩺Weakens the smell of their urine
