Congratulations to Charlie, one of our fabulous student veterinary nurses, for completing all of her assignments and exams……with distinctions ⭐️! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Charlie has worked at Manchester Veterinary Specialists for 4 years, initially as a surgical technician and then she started her journey to become a registered veterinary nurse in 2022. Charlie has been the model student and excels in all areas of veterinary nursing but she especially loves inpatient care, we are very lucky to have her. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We expect Charlie will qualify later this year after her clinical discussion and practical assessments. Well done Charlie! 👏👏👏⁣⁣

🐾 Owner Information: Video Footage for Remote Reviews 🐾

⭐️ We routinely ask our clients to send over videos of their pets walking on a lead in order to assess their progress. This is usually requested around the time of a scheduled review, but can be done anytime if there are concerns. ⭐️

📌For hind-limb procedures such as TPLO or MPL surgery this will be between 6 and 8 weeks post procedure.

📌For fore-limb procedures such as elbow or shoulder arthroscopy this will be between 6 and 8 weeks post procedure.

📌For total hip replacements this will be at 4 weeks post procedure and again at 12 weeks.

📌For fractures this can vary between 4 and 8 weeks dependant on the severity and procedure carried out.

⭐️ Our video below shows how to create good quality footage to help our clinicians accurately review your pet. ⭐️

This is beautiful Betsy 😍😇⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Betsy came to us last week for investigations into her hindlimb lamenes. She was diagnosed with bilateral cranial cruciate ligament insufficiency and returned this week for surgery. 🐶⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Ben completed a single session bilateral TPLO and she was able to go home the very next day. She had an epidural before her procedure and regular pain scores afterwards to ensure she remained comfortable throughout her stay. ❤️⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Well done Betsy for being so brave! 🥹😍⁣⁣

Meet the lovely Latte. ❤️⁣

Latte was presented to MVS in March of this year after being involved in a road traffic accident. She had sustained severe injuries to her left pelvic limb with multiple fractures and a significant degloving injury to the soft tissues of the limb. Latte was examined and treated by Anna, who performed surgical reduction and fixation of a fracture to the calcaneus bone (a bone of the ankle joint). Anna also instigated a wound management protocol to encourage healing of the injuries to the foot. Further fractures to the metatarsal bones and pelvis were managed conservatively. 🦴 ⁣

Over the last three months, Latte has been to MVS many times for ongoing management of the soft tissue injuries to her limb, check-ups regarding the orthopaedic injuries, and ensuring her owner’s are happy with her progress and comfort during her recovery. ⁣
The entire team at MVS has worked tirelessly to preserve Latte’s hindlimb and restore integrity to the soft tissues along with bony healing. ⁣
We are so pleased to see Latte walking well, with very good fracture healing and excellent healing of her significant soft tissue injuries. Her owners have been very patient and have managed her recovery excellently. ⁣

We are delighted to see Latte’s excellent progress and proud of our MVS team for helping her on this challenging journey! 🤗⁣

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

⚠️ Hot Weather Warning ⚠️ ⁣

Please take extra care of your furry friends during heat waves. Sudden changes in weather does not give them time to adjust and temperatures over 20c can affect them rapidly. 🥵⁣

Heat stroke can be fatal if not recognised early! ⁣

Walk dogs early or late in the day to avoid peak temperatures, minimise exercise and provide lots of fresh water. 💧 ⁣

Keep cats indoors or provide them with a cool, shaded area again, with lots of fresh water available. 💦 ⁣

You can test the ground with your hand, if it’s too hot for your skin it’s too hot for animals paws! 🐾 ⁣

Be conscious of the temperature in cars or public transport when travelling to and from the vet, ensure adequate ventilation and never leave pets unattended in vehicles. ⁣🚗

Have a lovely summer now that it’s finally here. 😊⁣

Yesterday we met Churchill. A five month old French bulldog who came to us with a humeral condylar fracture in his right elbow. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
He had this expertly repaired by Ben, with internal fixation. 🦴🏆⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Unfortunately French Bulldogs are genetically predisposed to elbow fractures of this kind. Churchill has been incredibly brave during his stay with us and we wish him a smooth recovery 🥰⁣⁣⁣⁣
