Today is a day to celebrate veterinary nurses across the world!

The Veterinary Nurses at Dogwood have a wide range of skills, including patient care, radiography, laboratory work, anaesthesia, theatre and surgical nursing skills, infection control, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, pharmacology, administration and also run our CT and MRI scanner.

Veterinary Nurses must take out a declaration upon qualifying and they must follow a professional code of conduct.

They have to provide evidence of ongoing continuous professional development every year to retain their title which is 45 hours every 3 years which means at least 15 hours per year! 🐾

Happy International Vet Nurse Day!

🐢🐢 πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰Did you know that your dogs nail growth can effect their posture and movement?

Having nails that are overgrown can cause your dog to shift the weight back to relieve the pressure from the nail. This can then cause strain on certain muscles/tendons/ligaments/joints as they compensate. When the nails are well maintained the weight is taken evenly through the pad and shouldn't cause any compensation issues.

These changes are noticed on land but also in your hydrotherapy sessions and something as little as trimming the nails can make a big difference on how they move. So dont forget to check your dogs nails before your next session πŸΎπŸ’…

🐢🐢🐢❀️ This gorgeous little boy is Montgomery. He came to us after falling off a sofa πŸ₯Ί. X-rays showed that he had a spiral fracture of the tibia. A splinted dressing was applied to keep the fracture stable and hopefully with rest and cuddles , Montgomery will be on the mend soon. ❀️🐢

🐢🐢 Gorgeous Chance came into Dogwood with a history of excessively licking his front paw.
A CT was performed which showed thickening of the tissue above the second digit.
Chance was prescribed antibiotics and came back a week later with slight improvement.
Lucy the vet decided to biopsy the area and the results showed a small amount of plant material embedded in the tissue.
Chance is now recovering at home and we wish him all the best. ❀️❀️🐢🐢

Lovely Lenny came in yesterday to have an elbow arthroscopy under general anaesthesia.

Previously Lenny had had a CT scan revealing a fissure on the apex of the medial coronoid process. This had been causing pain and discomfort for him.

Arthroscopy involves a minimally invasive procedure where a small incision is made into the joint, in Lennys case his elbow, and a extremely small specialised camera allows the surgeon to visualise inside the joint. The fragmented piece of bone was removed and the key hole incision closed with a suture.

Lenny made an excellent recovery, pulling some very cute faces πŸΎπŸ’™πŸ˜Š

This gorgeous girl 'Connie' came in 6 weeks ago after fracturing her right tibia and fibula.

After radiographs, which confirmed a mid shaft fracture of her tibia and fibula, she was taken to theatre to reduce the fracture and stabilise her hind limb.

Connie has been on strict crate rest for the last 6 weeks and has come in today for follow up xrays.

She was a little worried about being here today and needed some extra reassurance and cuddles to help her through. Her follow up xrays revealed successful healing πŸ˜ƒ She still has some recovering to do and all of us at Dogwood Referrals wish her a speedy recovery. 🐾

⚠️ Contains pictures of surgery⚠️

Meet Winnie an absolute super star patient. 🐾❀

Winning had a large spindle cell tumour on her left hind limb. She was referred to Dogwood Referrals to have the tumour removed.

A pre operative CT was performed which revealed the tumour wasn't infiltrating any of the muscles of the affected limb.

Large margins had to be removed during surgery and an epigastric flap was performed. A negative pressure drain was placed to help remove excess fluid during healing.

Winning recovered well from her surgery and came in today to have her sutures removed.
She has been an amazing patient πŸΎπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘
