We have had a stray dog brought in to us this evening, he is only young, entire male, tan coloured, only small and unfortunately not microchipped! Found in Foxdenton park Oldham, Chadderton. Proof of ownership will be required please phone the practice if this is your dog!

Z - zoonotic diseases

A zoonotic disease is an infectious disease which can be passed from animal to human.
Every time our RVN's come into contact with a poorly patient who are being treated for an infectious case they are at risk of contracting the infection themselves.

Personal protective equipment is worn, and good hand hygiene is very important when treating these patients, as this can help to prevent cross infection (spreading to other patients & other parts of the clinic).

Here are some examples of zoonotic diseases which pose a risk to humans:

RVN's are able to position & take radiographs of patients, they will then be interpreted by a vet.

There's a number of reasons why a patient may require xrays to be taken these can include:

🦴 foreign bodies
🦴 hip dysplasia

Under the direction of a vet, RVN's are able to administer vaccines to animals, these are generally done during a consultation.
Some owners choose to be present for this, others prefer their pets to have a cuddle with another nurse out the back.

During ultrasound procedures, our RVN's are on hand to restrain & comfort any conscious patients.
This is also an opportunity for vets to teach nurses what they see throughout the ultrasound.

Under veterinary direction, nurses are able to carry out smaller ultrasounds to check for post operative complications or during emergencies. A vet would then assess images and make a diagnosis.

RVN's are always learning and improving patient care through annual CPD (continuous professional development). But RVN's also help to train the next generation of nurses too!

Some RVN's choose to become a clinical coach to mentor student nurses during their training.
A clinical coach has to undergo extra training each year to be able to understand and organise the teaching of practical clinical skills a student nurse must learn. These skills are then recorded regularly.

Under schedule 3 of the Veterinary surgeons act & direction of a veterinary surgeon, RVN's who feel competent are able to complete minor surgeries (without entering a body cavity).
These surgeries include:
💉 wound stitch ups
🩸 surgical stitch ups
💉 lump removals

This means we are able to accept more cases, especially in those emergency situations when a patient requires a wound closing up.

Post surgery or recovery from a medical condition, nursing care is vital in helping animals regain their strength in order to be able to get back to full health.
Nurses help to rehabilitate animals of all species and ages.

Examples of rehabilitation include:

🦴 exercise therapy (walking)
💪 physiotherapy
🦴 laser therapy
💪 balance exercises
🦴 and so much more!

Ginger and white- with no microchip or collar- Does have distinguishing features.
Found near Shepley Estate, Globe Lane area.

Q - qualification

All RVNs have carried out years of training and exams in order to become qualified. This means they have all the required knowledge to be able to provide gold standard care for your pets.
Once qualified an RVN is awarded their own Registered Veterinary Nurse badge which depicts St. Francis, the patron saint of animals. If you look around the practice, you will see these being proudly worn by our qualified nurses.

The title ‘veterinary nurse’ is currently not protected by law. This means that anyone (regardless of any training or experience) can call themselves a veterinary nurse

The BVNA (british vet nurse association), along with the RCVS (royal college of veterinary surgeons) & BVA (british veterinary association) are working hard to change this
