And, from Rachel Gough at the finish, here is Pippa Funnell finishing us off.

That’s us! No serious incidents in Vicarage Fields.
Cooling horses 3
So I don’t want to see any more soggy towels left on horses necks. This just makes them warmer. Get water all over the horse.
Cooling Hirses
And admire the teamwork of Hong Kong. This horse wouldn’t go near the cooling tent on day one, but they practiced each day. Note also that the vets job is to stand and watch. Not to get wet themselves.
Cooling horses with Team Japan.
Horses get hot after exercise in the UK, not just at overseas events. There is a lot of misinformation about how to cool a horse properly. So learn from the professionals.
Look at the sheer volume of cold water Team Japan use, all over the horse, including the quarters. That is the engine, the hot part.
The most beautiful evening for racing at Newbury today.
‘Alex Weller came out 4 weeks ago this Saturday to my 30 year old naughty Welsh pony Rupert. He was absolutely crippled with an acute episode of laminitis, his first in the 20 years I've owned him. The prognosis wasn't looking very good in the first 2 days but Alex persuaded me to persevere.’
‘He really turned a corner and has been back out for a couple of weeks. And the attached video demonstrates his remarkable recovery. I should point out he was never this athletic in his youth and has been retired 6 years! So big thanks to Alex who has been a huge support to both myself and my field mate with her mare over the past few weeks’
We are so glad to see Rupert is feeling better!
Keeping cool in the heat here at Donnington Grove 💆🏼♀️🌞🏖. Remember to look out for the simple things like provision of shade and sufficient fresh water in this glorious weather!
FROZEN SEMEN INSEMINATION
FROZEN SEMEN INSEMINATION
The process of frozen semen insemination involves following the mare's cycle until she is in season and produces a follicle which is large enough to respond to an ovulating agent. We then scan regularly (usually at the clinic) and often very late at night to achieve an insemination time which is very close to ovulation of the follicle and release of the "egg" into the oviducts.
We thaw the straws of semen and perform "deep horn insemination" which deposits the semen as close as possible to the oviducts leaving them only a very short distance to travel.
This is a short video that Susan on of our stud vets and Rachel one of our house vets took which illustrates what thawed frozen semen can look like down the microscope.
New Melanoma Vaccine!
We are offering a promising new treatment for equine melanomas: A vaccine called “Oncept®” which is licensed for the treatment of melanomas in dogs in the USA. The vaccine works by stimulating an immune response against the tumour cells. The evidence currently available for its use in horses is anecdotal but initial impressions as reported by other clinics are promising, especially in early cases – a number of horses have shown a halt in tumour growth, a reduction in tumour size or even complete regression. No adverse effects have been reported apart from localised swelling at the reaction site. See a clip of ‘Oscar’ taking the vaccination in his stride 🙈💪🏻👏🏻
The recommended treatment is an initial course of 4 vaccinations administered at two-weekly intervals, followed by six-monthly boosters.
Please contact the equine office if you would be interested in discussing this further.
So was it the most exciting
Badminton ever? With a one fence lead Jonelle Price entered the cauldron of the Badminton show jumping arena. The best ever? Nah... every one is utterly thrilling. The tension of that show jumping round, knowing winner takes all, is unbearable every year. Congratulations Jonelle. Assuming no rugby World Cup won by a drop goal in extra time, or an Ashes test match won with a wicket in the last over, what else could sport offer us this year? #Badminton Badminton Horse Trials
So was it the most exciting Badminton ever? When Mickey Jung rolled two fences, we all thought, with pressure from behind off, Ollie was home and hosed. But no. If it was easy, there would be no Grand about the Slam. # Badminton Horse Trials
Will we see a Grand Slam? Ollie Townend equal (!!) with Jonelle Price, but goes second as she was nearer the optimum time. Close competition! #Badminton Badminton Horse Trials
It is a full service clinic at Donnington Grove. If your horses just let us know how they like their tea done, we are happy to oblige.
And this year last person through our fence is Andrew Nicholson. Just 2.4 time penalties, puts him 3rd with less than a point between him and Ingrid Klimke in the lead
I see it was Mark Todd who finished proceedings for us last year. And here he is again, first one through the quarry this year. Bruce Bladon at this fence with Bart Peczynski.
Nothing to do with Donnington, other than this being Alix Jackson's favourite horse, and I thought a lot of you might enjoy it.
