It is with regret that we write this message to say that after over 45 yrs of Wincobank Dog Club delivering training to all the wonderful dogs and their families that have come through our doors over the years, that we will be closing from this week.
Rising costs and other circumstances mean we are no longer able to provide our services. The Volunteer Committee Members, Peter, Shirley, Mark & Jo, would like to thank all of you for your support over the years, all the fabulous dogs we have got to know, and have seen grow in confidence to become happy family pets and their owners, many that have become good friends …. We will miss you all.

Useful information for any one out there with XL Bully furry friends...

As of today, XL Bully dog owners can apply for a Certificate of Exemption to keep their pet. This must be in place before 1 February 2024.

We'll be taking a short summer break after tonight's classes. Closed Thursday 10th August, but we,ll be back on Thursday 17th for our new beginners class from 7pm and Class 2 from 8pm... see you all soon.. ☺️👍🐾

We don't get to decide what's aversive and what's reinforcing to our dog, our dog is the only one who does.

My dog will search relentlessly to find a Kong hidden in the grass but can take or leave food when outdoors. He finds food reinforcing when doing training inside. There are a number of reasons for both these things.

He hates going out in the rain, other dogs don't mind at all.

My dog, Kitty, from years ago, looked as if her world ended if you said a harsh word to her (she was a Neapolitan Mastiff). This was before I trained positively. She didn't mind the rain.

Some dogs will work for kibble, others need a more tasty paycheck.

All dogs find pain aversive to some degree or another, that's why we evolved to feel pain. It's there to escape or avoid.

We have to understand the effect of these things on our dogs' behaviour. We need to have a proper understanding of the science of behaviour change.

Someone commented yesterday that you could use prong collars as positive reinforcement. You can't. You just can't. The same person said that pressure/release is positive reinforcement. It's not, it's negative reinforcement.

Until we have a proper understanding of the rules of behaviour and the emotions which go with it, our dogs will keep paying the price for our ignorance.

We all need to do better. Seriously.
