Hello everyone! My month off has almost come to an end, it's been fun apart from being unwell for two weeks of it 🙈 luckily I'm on the mend and looking forward to getting back to training your dog's. While I've been having a break I've also got the result back from two courses I have been working on. And I'm now a PUPPY TRAINING SPECIALIST & CANINE BODY LANGUAGE SPECIALIST!

In September I'll be studying for my accreditation and I look forward to bringing you all more skills, knowledge and kindness to training your dog's 🐶

I might be having a little break for the next few weeks but that doesn't mean I can't fill my time with even more dogs!
Dogs aren't just a job to me but they are literally my whole world so taking some time off to just enjoy them rather than doing the training side is pretty awesome.
Last week I travelled to Leicester to meet Pete Lewin's Newfoundlands! He has 5 of these gorgeous dogs and provides water safety talks and wellbeing swims with the dogs. He even well deservedly won the hero dog award at Crufts this year for all his hard work and thus amazing service he provides for people who may be struggling with their mental health. It just goes to show once again what an amazing impact dogs can have on us.
Seeing Pete's dogs in action was really something else, they swim effortlessly, you can tell that they love their job and their well-being and safety is taken into as much consideration as us humans. It was a truly remarkable day and I plan to go back and do it all again.

It was my last session with Barney today 🥹 and it's been an emotional one! It's been a joy to help Barney become Barney 2.0!

When I met Barney he was obsessed with jumping up at everyone and everything in the environment, pulled on the lead, quite fixated on other dogs, no recall, and could get in a very high arousal state very very quickly.

Today we finished on a high
✅ Great loose lead walking
✅ Lots of engagement with his mum
✅ Disengagement from other dogs, even ones running around near him
✅ Walked past people and other dogs on the street without jumping up or trying to lunge
✅ Recall has massively improved
✅ And today we worked on channeling his energy into retrieve games
✅ I could come into the home without being jumped on!

Barney and his guardian have been a joy to work with and this is just the beginning for them 🐾

All done with positive reinforcement - no harsh methods - no prongs/slip lead/ecollars etc.

Summer treats for your doggos and enrichment don't need to be fancy or expensive!

Here is a quick go to that Luna loves:
✅ Muffin tin
✅ 0% Greek yogurt
✅ 100% peanut butter (make sure there is NO xylitol in it as it's poisonous for dogs)
✅ Mix it up and spread it around the tin
✅ Any left over pop on a licki mat
✅ Throw it in the freezer for an hour

🐶 Happy doggo nice and occupied with a cold snack

The temperature is certainly rising again and it's important to be aware of how this can affect our dogs. Every year I see dogs struggling in mid afternoon heat out on walks and it is so dangerous. It's also important to note that the heat can have severe effects on flat faced breeds too.

Over the summer I'll be posted lots of alternatives to keep your dog cool and occupied in the warmer weather. But if in doubt please don't walk your dog!

Over the summer I'll also make changes should we be having training sessions or walking your dog when it is particularly warm. This will mean either training/walking earlier or much later when the weather is cooler. And there won't be any strenuous exercise such as ball throwing etc.

LOOSE LEAD WALKING 🐾

✅ It doesn't need to be difficult
✅ There is no need for aversive methods (prong collars, clip lead, e collars etc)
✅ It takes some commitment, consistency and the patience to let your dog learn a new behaviour.

Barney is a giant breed dog, he is super strong and his lovely guardian was having some trouble managing him, especially on walks. He is now developing a whole new relationship with his guardian, they are working as a team with check ins, focus and mutual consistency.
What you reward, you get more of. It's that simple!

We are continuing to work on calm as Barney can go into over arousal very quickly and unfortunately when our dogs get into that state it is very hard for them to make good decisions. With kind and gentle guidance Barney is learning to take the world in his stride and we are now beginning to work on his recall and his excitement around other dogs!

Great things to come from this wonderful boy!

Last week I received my Puppy Training Specialist qualification through Dog Training College. This included passing various assessments along with a written assessment at the end.

I've trained a hell of a lot of puppies now so it was only right to look at becoming a specialist in this area, plus who doesn't want to work with all the puppies.

Training with a view today ☺️
Thursdays are my day off with my own dog Luna 💗 and today we worked on.....

✅ Boundary games/settle in an outdoor setting with some added distractions

✅ Disengagement from distractions/triggers

✅ Instant down

✅ Middle into down

✅ Proximity

Then we finish our walk with some random wandering around, scatter feeding, find it games, and Luna had a lovely play with a border collie who was a nice match for her personality and play style, this also created a nice impromptu training session for me to recognise her arousal levels in play and cue regular breaks in play to bring that arousal level back down.

🐾 BARNEY 🐾
I've been working with Barney and his guardians for a short time now, Barney is a gorgeous Newfoundland and is very much in the throws of adolescents 🙈

Barney loves people and dogs and he shows this by getting very excited and jumping on them and as you can see Barney is a very big, heavy and strong dog who doesn't quite realise his size.

So far we have worked on several things with Barney

✅ Firstly the relationship between him and his guardian, building a relationship of trust and understanding. My first point of call is to help owners understand their dog, by understanding the dog then we can start to help them make god choices.

✅ We've started practicing focus skills to get Barney and his guardian working as a team.

✅ We have put management in place so Barney isn't constantly repeating unwanted behaviours.

✅ Created value in polite greetings with all 4 paws on the floor.

✅ Practiced calm/settle skills - it's easy to forget that for some dogs being able to be neutral in a certain situation or to be ok just doing nothing is a difficult skill to learn.

✅ Barney can be excitable so we are creating better positive outlets for that excitement which we have found that Barney doing some simple scentwork is really rewarding for him and focusing his excitement on to something more appropriate.

✅ Finally we are working on loose lead walking, creating proximity with his guardian, we've changed up the equipment, Barney was walking on a slip lead and in the habit of strangling himself on a walk which in turn can create health issues later on. We switch to a flat collar and 1.5m lead and he is instantly doing better, walking in sync with his guardian and therefore less stressful walks for the both of them!

I received this lovely picture and message from the gorgeous Ruby yesterday!
It was our last session together and what a lovely little journey it's been.

Ruby's guardians started with a pre puppy consultation so we could set Ruby up for success and go over everything from socialisation and habituation, toilet training, puppy wellness and all the foundations to cover.

Over the last 8 weeks we have covered so much, far too much to list but what I can say is Ruby is a fantastic puppy, her loose lead walking is fantastic, engagement with her owners is spot on and her recall is 👌

Over this time we have also done confidence building, enrichment, some basic scentwork and all of the puppy fundamental skills!

And lastly Ruby's success is testament to her guardians commitment and consistency which has been 110% in every session but mostly between session, practicing, rewarding and making training fun for their dog.

Training should always be enjoyable for both guardian and dog, there is never any need to punish, use harsh corrections, raise your voice or cause any fear or pain. Focus on building the relationship with your dog, creating positive emotions and rewarding all the good stuff your dog does. It's a true and simple recipe for success!

Managed to get some more CPD done this weekend! I'm a self confessed dog behaviour geek, if you've trained with me you will be well aware 🤣 I love continuing to learn and to give my clients and their dogs the most up to date training & knowledge!

Canine emotion is so important and in every situation I want to look at how your dog is feeling, what signs they give us about how they are feeling. In understanding our canine friends better, we can better meet their needs and most importantly help them work through any struggles.

And lastly it's absolutely ok for our dogs to have big emotions about certain things, remember your dog is a living, breathing animal. That means they can't be perfect all the time, and they have the right to express how they are feeling and not be shut down or punished for it.

I had my last session with Boss the Bulldog this week as he completed the Posipups fundamentals program and here is he modelling his Posipups rosette 😍

Our final session went over his loose lead walking and recall with outside distractions.

I find it really important when training to take these fundamentals outside and work with the dogs in the real world environments. And today Boss smashed through everything we have covered over the last 4 weeks which included

✅ Socialisation, habituation, puppy wellness, enrichment, and basic handling and husbandry
✅ Mat target, settle and introducing calm
✅ Focus, eye contact, hand touch, sit, down, stay and other areas of general manners and obedience
✅ Loose lead walking around distractions and in real world outside environments
✅ Recall around distractions and in real world environments
✅ We also managed to troubleshoot Boss' fondness for charging at the front door by desensitising the knocking at the door, reinforcing the 'stay' cue, and helping Boss to be able to think in arousal which is a tough one for any dog.

Boss will be joining me again later in the year to do some of my absolute adolescents program! I can't wait to see how he develops!

And finally a big well done to Boss' guardians - they have always been really invested in the training, gave 100% to it, asked questions, took on board recommendations and really did their homework.

As always it's a joy to be a little part of a puppies journey! Here's to many more Posipups training adeventures 🐾🎉🐾

Another session with Ruby Roo today!
Today we looked at mat target, mat target is like the gift that keeps on giving in that it teaches about 5 behaviours in one.
✅ Teaches the foundations of 'stay'
✅ Teaches settle
✅ Encourages the dog to have active rest (eg teaching your dog to be happy doing nothing)
✅ For this exercise it's also teaching Ruby the basics of impulse control
✅ Ruby has quite the social life so she is learning to be able to relax on a target area in busier situations.

We finished off the session with teaching her an 'emergency stop' 🛑

As you can see someone is definitely enjoying our time off this week! We haven't had a beach day since Christmas so this was much needed!

It was a lovely end to the week with this gorgeous boy 🥰 always a joy to spend time with him. We've played fetch, had a sunbathe and watched the world go by, had plenty of cuddles and a nice stroll around 💕

I'm now going to be having a little break until Sunday, but I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone and their doggos next week!

Another course done ✅ Confidence is so important for our dogs and it's something I plan to bring to classes and in some specialised 1-1s in the near future!

I had another training session with Boss the Bulldog today! He has almost finished the Posipups Fundamentals program and his owners have already signed up to my follow on program!

Boss is doing so well, today we revisited his loose lead walking and he is smashing it.

His guardians also wanted to work on Boss not charging at the door when he hears a knock so we did some great desensitisation work today and he picked it up so well!

What's different about my Posipups fundamentals program is that it is a collaboration between myself and the pawrents. I teach the guardians the things they actually want to learn with their pups, the things that will be useful for the puppies as they coexist in their guardians life, to make for a happier, settled pup as they grow up and combine this with all the puppy basics including general wellness, enrichment and husbandry.

Just some examples of what we learn is
✅ Rock solid recalls for families that love the outdoors and want to go off exploring with their dogs
✅ Boundary games and mat settles for those that want to be able to have a pub lunch or chill in a cafe with their dog
✅ Habituation and strong socialisation so your puppy is confident in their day to day life with you.
✅ Wait, stays and emergency stops - the very basic safety cues that could potentially save your dog's life or at least keep them out of harm's way.

That said, there is no timeframe in which any dog can learn these things, I have even taught owners of adult dogs that might have missed out on the basics, owners that want to revisit previous training, or recently welcomes a rescue dog to their home!

Ruby recently finished her 4 week Posipups fundamentals program and has continued onto my follow on program!

Firstly I have to say her guardians have been amazing, they have been 100% commited to Ruby's training and it shows in how well Ruby is doing.

At 4 months old Ruby now knows several cue's that we have started to now apply in the outside world.

In her 6th session today we had amazing

✅ Loose lead walking
✅ Solid recalls
✅ Off lead time with regular check ins
✅ Disengagement from distractions

Over our next sessions we will be doing the vital - waits - stays and emergency stops. Which are all incredibly important for any dog when enjoying off lead freedom to keep them safe.

Saturday splash about 🐾

I had a lovely training walk this morning with Ruby Roo and her parents. Ruby's socialisation continues but she is now off lead exploring new environments and her recall, eye contact, check ins and engagement is fantastic.

The cue's for safer, stress free walks

I got some really nice comments today on this video that I posted in another training group. Does your dog know how to ✅ Emergency stop ✅ Wait ✅ Come back when called These are all really important cue's to teach if you want your dog to enjoy their off lead time and ultimately have safer and stress free walks (for you and your dog). They are all cue's that I have quite easily taught my own dog and many clients dogs with great success, really simply using rewards based, force free training. Muzzle Training

🐶 Muzzle Training 🐶 Here at Posidogs we hold no stigma attached to muzzles. It's a great way to ensure stress free vets visits, walks and keep you, your dog and others safe, well and happy. There are so many reasons that a dog might wear a muzzle 👍 They could have a very high prey drive so a muzzle can stop a potential accident with a small furry. 👍 A dog might like to hoover things up off the floor which can make them incredibly unwell. 👍 They might get stressed in new or worrying environments like the vets so wearing a muzzle ensures they can get the proper care that they need in a safe way. Let's not forget that sometimes when an animal is in pain they may snap because they are being touched somewhere that hurts and that's what they are trying to tell us. 👍 A dog could be reactive to other dogs or people so the owner wants to do the responsible thing to avoid any accidents. The main thing to remember is that MUZZLED DOGS ARE ALSO GOOD DOGS. You never know when your dog might need to wear a muzzle. So simple desensitisation sessions like this can really help to make your dogs life that little bit easier.

One thing I've learned from my own dogs is that in the grand scheme of things they are here for such a short time, so make every day count, don't take things to seriously, let them be dogs, find out what they enjoy and do more of it! And don't forget to HAVE FUN!
