Do you know how to spot blue-green algae?

Exposure to blue-green algae can cause long-term health problems in pets and can even be fatal. By drinking from or swimming in contaminated water, pets are at a high risk of becoming seriously ill.

Contact your vet immediately if you think your pet is at risk of blue-green algae poisoning. For more information of what to look out for and how to protect your pet, read our advice article here: https://bit.ly/3LqTmA4

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.

If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

To learn more about grass seeds, and our four simple steps for dealing with them, read our helpful advice article here: https://bit.ly/3zAdaOP

Do you have questions about neutering your cat? It's something we strongly advise as it has many benefits for them and helps to tackle the number of stray cats in the UK.

Female cats will benefit from reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy, certain health conditions and even certain types of cancer. For male cats, neutering reduces their urge to fight other males, lessening the chance of certain diseases, and it also means they are less likely to mark their territory around your home.

It’s important to keep your pet hydrated all year round as it delivers lots of benefits to your pets health, but especially during the warmer months. Cats and dogs both sweat through their paw pads, so as they’ll do this more now it’s hot, they will need to be provided with more fresh water. 💧

Read our tips below on keeping your pet hydrated and how to spot the symptoms of dehydration in your dog, cat or rabbit.

https://bit.ly/4eFuUIK

23/06/2024

Remember, if it’s too hot for your hands or your bare feet, then it’s too hot for their paw pads! ⚠️

If you’re unsure whether it’s okay to let your pet go for a walk on pavements, a simple way to test the temperature is by holding your bare skin on the tarmac for five seconds ⏱️

If you find it painful, then your pet will find it painful to walk on!

To protect your pet, it’s best to avoid walks during the hottest part of the day, which is usually between 8am and 6pm. If you can't safely exercise your dog, missing a day won't hurt.

🔵 𝐁𝐄𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐄-𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐀𝐋𝐆𝐀𝐄 🔵

The rising warm weather conditions promote the growth of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, a bacteria which clumps together in bodies of standing freshwater, such as ponds and lakes.

Blue-green algae is highly toxic to dogs. It can cause causing fatal liver damage and long-term health problems.

High volumes of bacteria form ‘blooms’ which can be visible in water, creating the look of pea soup. It can also look like greenish-brown flakes, blue-green scum on the water’s surface, and foam-like blooms around the water’s edge (see below*).

Aside from local ponds, it can also be found in garden ponds, empty plant pots, bird baths, and water fountains.

Symptoms of blue-algae poisoning:
🔹 Vomiting
🔹 Diarrhoea
🔹 Fitting/seizures
🔹 Weakness
🔹 Disorientation/confusion
🔹 Excessive drooling
🔹 Collapsing
🔹 Breathing difficulties

Some symptoms appear within 15 minutes to an hour, but some can take up to 12 hours.

If you suspect your pet has been in contact with blue-green algae, or if they show any of these symptoms after entering water, you should see a vet straight away.

‼️ UPDATE: OWNER ON WAY TO COLLECT ‼️

We have just had a male Doberman handed in to us - no collar or lead. He is microchipped but not registered on a system we can access.

Friendly but extremely boisterous.

If he looks familiar, please come down to the practice as soon as possible. Proof of ownership will be required.

11/06/2024

Worms in rabbits are much less common than in cats and dogs, but they can still pick up the wriggly parasites from time to time🐇🪱

The main type of worm rabbits get is called pinworm, which they pick up through eating the droppings of another rabbit.

Pinworms don’t normally cause any serious health concerns but they can cause itching and discomfort around your rabbit’s bottom. Weight loss and poor coat condition can also be indicators.

What to do if your rabbit has worms:
📞 Contact your vet who will be able to prescribe the correct treatment
🧽 Increase cleaning of your rabbit’s play area (or your home if they are an indoor rabbit)
🪮 Groom your rabbit thoroughly and then a few days after giving treatment
🥬 Avoid feeding greens collected from where wild rabbits may have been
🐰 Keep your rabbit population low and avoid sitting cages on top of each other

When you sign up to the Medivet Healthcare Plan, your rabbit's worming treatments are included in the monthly cost, which is currently just £10 per month! This enables you to spread the cost, keep on top of regular worming, and receive reminders when a worming is due.

For more information or if you have any concerns, feel free to get in touch. 🐰

UPDATE: Freya and Cally are coming back to us later today, so the rehoming opportunity for them continues. Dot has already found a home - hooray!🥳🥰

If you are interested, please call us on 01952 249141. We ask that you DO NOT express your interest on this post as we are unable to monitor Facebook regularly throughout the working day.

Freya is the black/white with more white on her face (going up nose), Cally is the other black/white; they are both 12 years old.

They have both been spayed.

They are not good with dogs.

They are really sweet and affectionate cats who are looking for somewhere to enjoy the remainder of their lives being loved and looked after. We are happy for them to be rehomed together or separately.

Thank you & please feel free to share 💙🐈‍⬛

Today is the day! 📣🐈

It is now a legal requirement for ALL cats in England that are older than 20 weeks to be microchipped and registered on a database. This includes indoor cats who DO very often manage to sneak out - trust us, we know!

If found without one, cat owners will be given 21 days to get a chip implanted or they will face a fine of up to £500.

We offer microchipping appointments at the practice and are currently providing 25% off until 30th June 2024. It is a very quick and easy injection that most cats don’t feel any discomfort from at all.

Contact us today to make an appointment.

⚠️ 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 / 𝗥𝗘𝗛𝗢𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗣𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬 ⚠️

Following yesterday’s post regarding the three cats, all we are able to say is the owner has been in contact and sadly does not want them returned to him.

Therefore there is now a rehoming opportunity for all three cats. They are all female. We are unsure if they are neutered.

Dot is all black, she is 10 years old. Freya is black/white with more white on her face (going up nose), she is 12 years old. Cally is the other black/white, she is also 12 years old.

They all seem to be very docile, loving and affectionate. They have been vet checked and we can confirm there are no obvious injuries, ailments or problems.

This is obviously a very sad situation but our priority now is finding them loving homes. Ideally we want them to stay together but understand this may not be possible. We are unsure what they are like with dogs.

Please call us on 01952 249141 if you are interested, we ask that you DO NOT comment on this post as we are unable to monitor Facebook regularly throughout the working day.

Who remembers Delilah the escape artist? 😹

She came in for her second vaccination today (at last!)— we all kept a VERY close eye on her! 😁

Thank you to everyone for your concern and support regarding the abandoned cats, we really appreciate it.

The cats are warm, fed and safe for tonight, which is our top priority. We are in communication with a rescue centre who will hopefully be able to care for them over the weekend as we close tomorrow for three days, and we will then reassess the situation on Monday.

Please remember the matter is very delicate and we don’t know the whole story. We understand the frustration but kindly ask everyone to please refrain from making disparaging comments going forward, or they will be deleted.

Thank you again from all at Medivet Shawbirch 🐾

05/06/2024

EDIT: The cats are now available for rehoming. Please see our recent post. ‼️

⚠️ URGENT HELP REQUIRED ⚠️

We have unfortunately just had three cats brought into the practice and dumped in the waiting room. The man who brought them in left suddenly and drove off.

All three cats are in good health and do not require veterinary care. They are all microchipped to the same owner but we are unable to contact them.

This is obviously extremely frustrating for us and for the poor cats who are very distressed and confused.

We are not a rehoming service and do not have the facility to take in abandoned cats, so we have tried to contact several rescue centres in the Shropshire area but had no luck so far. If anyone can recommend any that we may not have tried yet, this would be much appreciated.

Pets can develop skin allergies at any age, so it's important to make sure you know the signs and symptoms. Dogs may start scratching excessively, whereas cats may start licking their belly, back, or behind their legs more than usual.

The most common skin allergy is called atopic dermatitis, and although it's a lifelong condition, it can be controlled and managed, meaning your pet can lead a normal and healthy life. Treatments may include medication, supplements, or even newer monoclonal antibody treatments.

Read more about atopic dermatitis and how your vet can help here: https://www.medivetgroup.com/pet-care/pet-advice/skin-allergies-atopy/

What better way to participate this year’s than to spend some time with your pets?

This year’s theme, Movement: moving for our mental health, encourages people to move in a way that suits them. Whether you’re taking your dog for a walk or playing games with your cat, being physically active is great for our minds and bodies. It's also a great way to bond with your pet.

Increased physical activity is not the only mental health benefit of spending time with your pet. Read our article on the six other mental health benefits of being a pet owner here: https://www.medivetgroup.com/pet-care/pet-advice/six-ways-pet-ownership-benefits-your-mental-health/
