Narrow nares are a feature of BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome).
This, along with elongated or swollen soft palate, everted laryngeal saccules (little swellings next to the vocal cords), narrow trachea and occasionally swollen tonsils, all decrease effective airflow into the lungs. This can make breathing very difficult for these breeds.

Luckily there are many breeders putting in good effort to help minimise these symptoms in their breeding programs while still producing quality puppies in these joyful breeds that many people love!

In many cases some surgical correction is still advised though. This could involve widening the nares, resecting everted saccules that are blocking the trachea or shortening a soft palate that is getting trapped in the throat.

Did you know, early correction of pinched nares may postpone, or even decrease the need of further surgeries for BOAS?

>Swipe to see how naroplasty widens the nostrils to allow better inflow of air while breathing.

Did you realise that the all-too-familiar notion of “desexing your dog at 6months” should not necessarily be the way to go?

Dr Jennifer was invited as a guest on The Vet Chat, a NZ based Veterinary podcast to talk about this topic - one she is very passionate about!
Unfortunately the audio quality is very poor (and the rerecording was lost) but this had to do. It’s still a worthwhile conversation to listen to, albeit aimed primarily at veterinarians.

Dog Desexing - One Size Doesn’t Fit All | Dr Jennifer Dauth:
Dr Jennifer Dauth joins Sumari to chat about her fascination with reproduction, the driving force for her to become a member at ANZCVS (Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists). Desexing in dogs is not a one size fits all conversation. New research, more informed owners, the changing status of the dog in the household and alternative medical options all contribute to vets having to reconsider their protocols. Jennifer talks about the pros and cons of desexing, the various medical and surgical options available, as well as striking a balance with what is best for the individual dog, while addressing the owners’ needs.
(Link in bio)

Although 6 months of age is still an excellent time to sterilise many pets, the options and timing with regard to desexing of our pets is as individual as they are. Veterinarians and owners should take into account many different factors including the breed of the dog, the lifestyle of the family, the dynamic between pets, the intention of dog and even the personality! These are all important factors in guiding the timing of sterilisation.

There are also different options including non-surgical routes.

This makes sterilisation the topic of a very important discussion in your pet’s health! We invite you to come chat to our vets when this something that you are needing to consider.

A little bit of magic and a lot of love

Fairies perform many crucial tasks, from collecting teeth and slugging around golden coins, to pollinating the flowers and making sure little kids have rainbow filled dreams, but there are some fairies out there that are irreplaceable at a veterinary practice!

Although these are real-life people, I group them with the fantasy beings of storybooks as there is no way that they can accomplish everything they do without some form of magic! They are our veterinary nurses.

Being a veterinary nurse is one of those “behind the scenes jobs” where they might not be seen at all, but just like our storybook fairies, they often make or break the spell that saves the day. I have seen many veterinary instruments suddenly appear and dirty blankets disappear over the years. I have often seen a nurses’ special touch to calm down a patient and I am convinced that I have caught a glimpse of the golden sparkle of fairy dust on more than one occasion.
The long list of tasks veterinary nurses manages to accomplish, confirms my suspicion that they have a magic wand hidden somewhere in their scrubs. They make sure all our patients are comfortable, warm, and well fed. They take care of our patients’ medical needs, drawing up and administering medication. They prepare drip lines, surgical instruments, laboratory tests and snacks (for the Vets, of course) They comfort clients and keep them updated on their pets. They make paw prints and wipe tears.

Becoming a veterinary nurse takes 2-3 years of studying and is the start of a lifelong commitment to your patients needs. It is a job that can be messy, scary, and emotionally draining... with thank you’s being few and far between. It is also one of the most fulfilling career options out there if you love animals as you get to be rewarded in nose licks and furry cuddles.

So, the next time you visit a veterinary practice, be sure to give the vet nurse a big, warm-hearted smile as without them, there would be no fairy tale endings for our pets.

We have some exciting news!

Our True Vets management team have taken on another clinic, Sommerville Veterinary Centre, based in Howick.
This is a well-loved, trusted clinic and aligns beautifully with what we stand for at True Vets Ormiston.
You will still be greeted by the same friendly team at True Vets though, and we are committed to continuing the service that you value! After all, you are True Vets Family!

We’re looking forward to extending our family to Sommerville!

Dear clients,

When the opportunity came up to take over from Patrick and Lindsey at Sommerville Vet Centre we didn’t even give it a second thought. Our value systems are aligned and so it felt like a very natural step for us to take. At True Vets, our slogan is “True Compassion, True Quality, True Care” which fits hand in glove with the Sommerville slogan, “Where pets come first”. We have always had great admiration for the clinic, its staff, and particularly its standing in the community. It has been clear to us that they stayed the course when living out their mission to put the needs of your pets first, and we look forward to continuing this legacy.

We believe that a business’s greatest asset are its people, and we feel humbled that all the staff are willing to give us an opportunity to lead them into the next chapter of the Sommerville Vets success story. You will start to notice a few minor changes and upgrades around the clinic, but for the most part, you can expect to see the same familiar faces that you have been looking after you and your fur-babies over the years.

We look forward to your continued patronage.

You may have heard reports about recent increases in Parvo cases.
While this may be the case, Parvo can occur at any time (even the colder winter months, although it is much more common in warm weather) and is highly contagious, so it pays to have a better understanding of the disease.

We’ve found a fantastic article by Zoetis Animal Health and would like to encourage everyone to read it.
This is especially important for those with young dogs (or those that get exposure to young dogs), particularly those dogs that are not fully vaccinated. Immunologists-compromised adult dogs are also at risk.
If you don’t have a pet that falls in the high risk categories, you may still help educate someone else that does.

https://www2.zoetis.co.nz/products-solutions/dogs/canine-parvovirus

The newest guidelines with regards to vaccination is to continue initial vaccination protocols till after 16w, to ensure the pup has built up enough immunity of their own. Public playtime and adventures should also be avoided until the pup has had their “vaccination graduation”.

Feel free to contact us to check if your dog’s vaccinations are up to date.

Meet our latest artist:

This Emily. She has recently turned 4 and enjoys all the adventure that comes along with that!
She adores flowers and simply cannot resist picking a wild flower (or as many as her little hands can hold) and then dishes them out to whoever is close by. This is probably why you can spot so many flowers where the cat is playing!
She also loves sunny days. She explained “look behind the beautiful cat, it’s the sun!”
We hope you enjoy her bright artwork as much as we do!

Safe and sound!
We were so relieved that Fur-Osty was found, we immediately gave him a BackHome microchip! We wanted to make sure that if he was ever lost again, he would our contact details with him so that we can get back to True Vets! It is, after all, our responsibility to keep him safe until Christmas, so that he can make his way back to
Santa!

Since he was such a brave elf, he even earned himself the True Vets bravery tag (that we award to our bravely microchipped pets).

Did you notice how well suited his unique number is? 🔔

Fur-Osty, we love your visits (and even, or especially, your mischief). Here’s hoping you head BackHome safely next year!!!

We’re turning 2 today!

It’s been such a great venture setting up this practice and getting to know our local community! We love that we know each other by name, we love the little chit-chats, we love the pats we get to dish out and we love that we get to share the love with everyone!

Here’s to many more years of you all being part of the True Vets family!
