In addition to our in house training and practical training courses, we also send delegates to the NZVA and NZVNA conference this week.

This year Dr Peter and Dr James attended a variety of oncology courses taught by some of the top specialists to help keep our clinic offering you the best options for your pet in the face of a cancer diagnosis.

Two of our fully qualified nurses Alanah and Max attended a variety of top nursing courses too! These included Emergency Anaesthesia, nutrition, advanced neonatal and pediatric procedures.

Once the 4 of them are back we'll be carrying out an in house CPD training for this massive wealth of information to be passed onto the rest of the team, who've done an amazing job keeping the clinic running smoothly without them.

A big thanks to Animal Referral Centre and Veterinary Specialists Aotearoa for providing some great specialists to contribute towards professional development.

Today we bid a very fond (but temporary) farewell to Ellesha as she begins her maternity leave.

She's been here at St Luke's Veterinary Centre since it opened in November 2014 and has been a gem to both colleagues and clients alike.

We wish her and her husband all the best as they welcome their second child into the world and look forward to her return in 2025. Although we'll see her many times before that!

A little sneaky view of what happens in the hospital.

Here's Dr Daniel and Dr Helen performing endoscopy and taking biopsy samples from a very sweet dog who's had non-resolving vomiting.

Endoscopy has a wide range of uses, here it's allowing aspirate and biopsy samples from within the body without an invasive exploratory laparotomy. It can also be used to remove recently swallowed items which won't come back up with vomiting.

It's already been a crucial tool in numerous cases here at St Luke's Veterinary Centre to provide brilliant healthcare for your fur-baby's needs.

We're very sorry to announce that we had a cat that has passed away left outside our premises last night. He was found on the St Lukes Motorway slip road, according to the note that was left with him. Sadly it does look like he's been clipped by a car but his passing was likely to have been instant.

If you're missing a black and white male cat, approximately 5-6 months of age. He had been desexed but no chip present. Slight white marking on his back and a black marking on his chest. If you think he might be yours please contact the clinic on 09 845 5573.

With his trusty laser goggles in place, Draco receives treatment from Dr. James, employing the innovative K-laser technology to expedite the healing process of his injured toe.

K-laser is a brilliant piece of technology that has been shown to be effective in inflammation, surgical wound healing, tendon/ligament injuries, fractures, arthritis and wound healing.

It's part of our armoury to keep your pet as healthy and happy as possible, whilst simultaneously training the whole team to use these advanced technologies!

IT'S DISCOUNT TIME! 20% OFF DENTALS IN MARCH 2024

Time to say fairwell and adios to bad breath and teeth issues!

Dental disease can be very uncomfortable and can lead to secondary problems including bone infection, bacteria in the blood and in some cases inflammation/infection in the interior of the heart. To encourage your pet's well being we're leading the March against dental disease by offering a whooping 20% discount off dental procedures in March 2024 (get it? March! It's ok, we are great vets not comedians!)

20% off all dental procedures during March 2024 so give us a call and get booked in! If you're not sure your fur baby needs one then get a free dental consult with out nursing team for a check up and estimate.

01/03/2024

Cattery bookings for Christmas and New Years 2024/25 are now open. This is a first come first served scenario. If you would like to enquire into booking your fur-baby into our Cattery please email Jess;

[email protected]

Please note enquiry does not constitute a confirmed booking until you receive correspondance from Jess confirming your booking and a deposit has been received. The reception team can't book your place so please email Jess directly, not phone or email the reception team.

Looking forward to seeing our extended fur family soon!

29/02/2024

As we head into the countdown towards Easter and our chance to munch down as much chocolate as we can, just a friendly reminder to watch out for with our furry family members.

Chocolate and raisins/sultanas are both extremely dangerous for dogs, so don't share it with them. This includes hot cross buns!

What to do if they have eaten some? Don't panic! Give the skilled team here a call straight away so we can give you advice for the next steps. Always try to bring the wrappers (if they haven't eaten those too).

If it's after 6pm at night weekdays or after 12pm on Saturday then please call ARC Animal Referral Centre on 09 281 5815 or VSA Veterinary Specialists Aotearoa on 09 849 2121

Don't forget we'll be closed on the 29th of March and 1st of April (but open 30th March as normal; 9-12) so call the fantastic emergency vets if you need urgent veterinary care.

Happy almost Easter from the whole team!

Dogs can only sweat small amounts through their paws, which means they can struggle to regulate their temperature 🐶🌡 They rely on panting to cool down and can quickly overheat in hot weather. Dogs with flat faces (such as bulldogs and pugs) have a particularly hard time because they can't always breathe or pant as effectively as other dogs.

Please take care when exercising your pooch this summer, especially if they're older, overweight, have an underlying disease such as a heart condition, or are a flat-faced breed. Take extra care in high humidity when panting becomes an inefficient way of cooling down. Remember, heat stroke can still occur on days that don’t seem particularly hot to us humans, especially if the humidity is high.

Here at St Luke's we strive to have a happy and pawsitive visit for puppies. With the aid of non slip mats, lick mats and a positive bonding experience you can see how well Cooper has his final puppy vaccines.
A special mention to Emily for encouraging mid vaccination social visits as well. Not every visit to your pets doctors should include an injection, but they must all have love, care and food!

Was great to see Emily and her beloved Cooper come into the clinic today for some slow and steady introduction to the team and the clinic.
Emily, a highly experienced professional dog behaviourist, from See Spot Learn is occassionally suggested by us to see some patients who may be struggling with behavioural and training issues, as well as puppy classes and grooming services with positive reinforcement training only.

Here is a case of demonstrating by example, Cooper has come in for some positive bonding association to the clinic. If you think you were only brought to a room for an injection you wouldn't like that room very much. Here is a chance for Cooper to meet us with only treats and cuddles to create the positive bond we try to have with all our extended fur-baby family.

So if you have a puppy (or adult) who might be a little nervous at the vets feel free to bring them in during hours for some attention and nurse introductions! (Even if you don't come to us normally!) Our mission is kind, compassionate care delivered professionally.

Thanks for spoiling us today Emily!

Dogs love playing in tall grass, but tiny grass seeds have sharp barbs that can work their way into the skin and cause huge problems. Here’s how.

Beransa: The New Canine Arthritis Injection

What is BERANSA and how does it work?
BERANSA is an innovative new therapy called a Monoclonal Antibody. It is a biological therapy that works like your dog’s own immune system. It targets and neutralizes a protein that stimulates pain in patients with arthritis. Through this action, one BERANSA injection alleviates pain for a full month in addition to the benefit of a positive safety profile.

How is BERANSA given?
BERANSA comes in an easy and convenient subcutaneous injection and is to be administered every month by your veterinarian. This convenient mode of administration removes the need and the challenge of medicating your dog daily. If your veterinarian has prescribed BERANSA, it means that your dog has been diagnosed with arthritis and is in pain. Arthritis is a life-long, painful disease which cannot be cured and will progress over time.
It can however be effectively managed thanks to BERANSA. It is important to stay on top of your dog’s monthly injections and visit your vet practice when scheduled. This means your beloved dog gets their treatment on time when they need it and remains comfortable.

Please give us a call today to arrange an appointment with one of our vets to see if BERANSA would be suitable for your dog.
