A lot of times when people ask for help with their horses, they name the solution to their problem without even knowing it.

"When I ride away from the barn, my horse does xyz, what should I do?"

"When the farrier comes and I have to bring my horse into the barn he does xyz, what should I do?"

"When I try to bathe my horse in the wash rack, he does xyz, what should I do?"

In most cases people know where the breakdown happens. What they don't understand is that the solution is not what you do after the breakdown happens, but before.

Train where you can not where you can't.

If your horse is having problems away from the barn, start closer to the barn. Ride closer around the barn where the horse is relaxed.

If your horse is having problems in the barn separated from his friends, start closer to his friends. Bring a friend in the barn or trim outside the pasture where the horse is relaxed.

If your horse is having problems in the wash rack, start outside the wash rack. Practice with the hose out in the open where the horse is relaxed.

Once you have found a starting point where the horse is comfortable then learning can happen and once you have the skills you need in place you can begin to proof and generalize them. That's when you can start to advance towards where the breakdown used to happen. Your horse is comfortable riding and doing behaviors a few feet from the barn, great now try a little further.

My heart is broken. After seeing the newest inflation on hay and the current shortage I am giving up boarding and board/training. I would easily have to charge four hundred and up without an arena at this point to break even just on feed bills. It will be difficult just providing for Obsidian at this point. I will have to be hauling him out in order for him to see his buddies each weekend. It's terrible that he will have to spend so much time alone even if I spend time with him everyday, even if he sees the neighbors horses. It's just not the same. Snickers will be moving to Aurora Oregon here soon. For everyone that's still boarding and keeping things together, Thankyou! Rooting for you. Most of us work full time on top of everything else we do. Please thank your horse cargivers and your moms today! Happy mothers day. #mindovermatterhorsemanship

You know how they say mares don't care about your feelings? I rode her this morning bareback and halter to go grab mail first thing after bringing her from pasture. She is so good! Stands to let me get on, gave her a treat from the pear tree. Rode her down got off grabbed the plastic scary mail grabs her mane with plastic in the same hand and jumps up bareback. She stands still as a rock and takes me back home at a nice pace. I think she cares about mine! My own gelding I've had three years would give me the look of betrayal if I had gotten on like that bareback first thing in the morning. She's going to make someone a very nice horse. Someone snatch her up! #mindovermatterhorsemanship

Working up the courage to keep moving forward and onwards is sometimes tough business. This life and this job is tough business. How many days do we cross paths with the wrong people on very different journeys, to become so discouraged. Today was one of those days! This week and even this whole year. Why? When we do big things and take great chances we risk great loss. Not to lose ourselves in the process is the battle. To stick to what's right in our hearts even when that light isn't so bright anymore. To keep fighting, That is the process, that's life! To be grateful for everyday and to live it full like it's your last, dispite hardships and loss. I decided to turn my own day around. Riding Celeste today from home we saw a dove. I like to believe that it's a symbol of peace and to keep carrying on this journey.🕊 Celeste worked her heart out for me like usual, we even had a nice canter on the trail around Golden hour. Herself and many so many others are wonderful reasons not to ever quit and give up!
