When having a service dog you want the dog to not care about any dogs around them. There are two extremes when it comes to socialization either you see a dog that doesn’t like other dogs or you see a dog that likes dogs way to much. For service work we don’t want either extremes we want to train our dog to be right in between.

A tired dog is not a calm dog. As exercise is essentials for our dogs health, what happens when we don’t have time to exercise our dogs before they work, they are disobedient and frustrating. It’s easy to leave a tired dog in a down stay, it’s hard to leave a over excited dog in a down stay. Why is this so important, why can’t I just tire my dog out fully before they work? We want our dogs to be able to work in any circumstances we put them in weather they are tired or overly excited. As we also talk about working a medical detection dog, we don’t want them tired, when they are tired they miss alerts and that’s the last thing we need. How do we achieve working a overly excited dog, we teach them the art of doing nothing. Meaning we find somewhere to sit we put them in a down and we wait till they fall asleep once they fall asleep they get to break. We do this when they are overly excited in the house in public anywhere you find the opportunity. The more you practice this the more your dog learns how to settle there brain and process what we want even when they are excited.

As we are in our hottest months don’t forget to protect your pup from the heat! especially those service dogs that are working all day. Even from the car to the store there little paws can burn super quick. I usually hate boots but these ones aren’t bad they are on Amazon along with the cooling jacket.
