At JFS Altius Farms we do something called aeroponic farming. This is a technique that grows plants without soil. Aeroponic systems tend to be vertical, with the plant roots suspended in the air while water and added nutrients are run over them from a pump system. This type of farming uses less water and provides more nutrient dense foods!

For this red butter lettuce, each leaf tells its own sunshine story through varying shades of red, and we rotate the tower to guarantee every plant gets its share of light, resulting in delicious and nutritious greens.
As a former florist and student at MSU studying integrative health care, greenhouse operations team member Shae started at JFS Altius Farms as a volunteer, then joined the Altius team as a part-time employee before becoming full-time. Shae’s passion for plants and interest in food justice make her the perfect fit for our farm family, and we’re so pleased to have her on the team.

Don’t let this time lapse fool you. Seeding takes about 10 mins per flat, and is one of the most meticulous and important steps in our operations chain. Thousands of seeds get planted in rock wool each week. And every variety requires a little something unique. It’s only after trial and error and hours of practice does this process look easy.
