Plants at JFS Altius Farms are propagated in rockwool. This planting medium works well in our Tower Gardens due to its porous, lightweight nature. It allows water and nutrients to pass by the plant’s roots, giving them everything they need to grow until it’s time for harvesting!

Romaine calm … it’s #NationalLettuceMonth! At JFS Altius Farms, lettuce is a pretty big deal. At JFS Altius Farms, our greens are strategically planted around the greenhouse depending on the amount of sunshine they need. For this red butter lettuce, each leaf tells its own sunshine story through varying shades of red, and we rotate the tower to guarantee every plant gets its share of light, resulting in delicious and nutritious greens.

Don’t let this time lapse fool you. Seeding takes about 10 mins per flat, and is one of the most meticulous and important steps in our operations chain. Thousands of seeds get planted in rock wool each week. And every variety requires a little something unique. It’s only after trial and error and hours of practice does this process look easy.
