We are excited to announce that Ryan Giles, DVM has joined our veterinary team. Ryan Giles grew up in western Pennsylvania near the town of Ebensburg. He attended Penn State University and graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. After graduation, Ryan moved to Fort Collins, Colorado for a job with Bovine Reproductive Specialists. During his time there, he was trained as an AI and reproductive ultrasound technician, which applied control of ovarian dynamics with use of ultrasound to improve estrous synchronization of dairy herds along the front range.

In 2012, Ryan completed a master’s degree in reproductive physiology at Colorado State University with a main research focus on follicular wave dynamics as it pertained to improving beef cattle estrous synchronization methods. He also aided in research being conducted at the in-vitro fertilization laboratory at CSU.

In May of 2017, Ryan received his DVM from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and worked with Ashby Genetics as an embryo transfer practitioner in Harrisonburg, VA for 5 years. He is excited to join the team at Mid Maryland Dairy Vets this summer. His special interests are embryo transfer and improving estrous synchronization protocols. Ryan and his wife Maria have 2 children, Sawyer and Zoey. In their free time, they enjoy camping, fishing for trout and bass, and exploring the mountains.

Acute traumatic Proptosed eye in a yearling Holstein heifer. Almost 20 years in practice and this is a first. Suspect an impact injury with no tear or laceration observed. Plus, she was in a pen with a few heifers in heat with high activity. Opted to give hope a chance and popped eye back in with tarsorhaphy (suture eyelids together). Will re-evaluate eye in 2 weeks when we will make a decision on enucleation. Prognosis for return of vision is less than 25%. So we shall see.

Calving or parturition is induced by rising cortisol levels in the calf which is why we induce calving with dexamethasone. Increasing cortisol occurs as a result of rising ACTH from the maturing fetal pituitary gland. Over the past 2 years, we had 2 cases of prolonged gestation length in which the cow was at least 10 days overdue with no signs that calving was imminent. In fact, the cows had dishrag udders. No springing. No edema. Nothing. Both cows were induced. After 3 days with no calf, the owner of the first case elected to perform a c-section, delivering a live calf but with a hole from sinus to cranium evident. Calf was euthanized. Today, after being induced Wednesday, another cow fortunately delivered a live bull calf but with a sizable cleft palate (close to splitting into 2 heads) and hole leading to the brain. In all likelihood, both calves had congenital brain abnormalities and lack of pituitary development to induce parturition.
