Starting tomorrow, the City of Houston is requiring all pets to be microchipped. BARC will be holding free chip clinics - details at the end of the article.

Pet owners can be fined between $100 to $500 dollars if their pets are found without a microchip, but BARC says they understand pets get out and are not trying to get punitive.

This morning we lost one of our beloved clinic cats - Bruce AKA Bruce Wayne AKA Batman. It was very sudden and unexpected but mercifully quick and we are so very grateful we were all here to be with him when he passed. He loved to play with Susie on the palm tree, he loved to snuggle with Dr. Oeben when the mean lady came with the vacuum. He loved kittens and raised up several of the other clinic cats. We ❤️ you Bruce and we will miss you every day. 😿

The Houston City Council has passed an ordinance that will require all owned cats and dogs be microchipped. The chip will replace the rabies tag as proof of ownership and vaccination and the hope is that lost animals will be reunited with their owners more quickly as Animal Enforcement Officers will be able to scan them in the field rather than having to bring them to Houston’s already over-crowded shelters. (For more details, there is a link below to the story.)

Last week we were able to be part of this process when Jackson was brought in as a stray by a client. We found a chip and started a Found Pet report. By the end of the day, our client called to let us know that Jackson’s grateful owners were coming this weekend to get him and that he’s been missing for FOUR YEARS!! What an incredible story and it was only possible thanks to a tiny microchip. They’ve missed him terribly and now there will be a joyful reunion!
