Did you know Dr. Smith works with all kinds of animals? Recently we have been working with Link a golden eagle! He recently flew into a cactus while out working with his handler. Thankfully he is recovering and on his way back to being a working falconry bird!

His handler shared this website with us for those of us with questions about what these birds do! https://www.falconry.org/

Lucy, a crowned eagle, is also pictured as she is a past patient of Dr. Smith's because of a similar eye injury!

Today we are thankful for all of our clients!! We are so fortunate to work with the best animals in Las Vegas!!

Cancerous masses that occur on or within the eye are known as ocular tumors. These tumors can occur on the surface of the eye (corneal tumors) or within the eye (intraocular tumors). Corneal tumors are commonly associated with UV light exposure and occur in lightly pigmented tissue. The most common corneal tumors diagnosed are squamous cell carcinoma (see photo) and hemangiosarcoma. ACVO Diplomate, Dr. Nicole Scherrer, explains what ocular tumors are and how they are treated on our blog: http://ow.ly/Wvey50NxM2a

Cloudy eyes can be a major concern for pet owners, especially since cataracts are an important cause of vision impairment in pets. Cataracts and Nuclear sclerosis are the most common causes of clouding of the lens that may be noted by pet owners, but there is sometimes confusion over which condition a pet is affected by. Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist, Dr. Emily Conway, explains the difference between the two on our blog: https://www.acvo.org/tips-treatments-tricks/cataracts-vs-nuclear-sclerosis

Diabetes in dogs has increased by 32% in the past 10 years. Diabetes is more common in middle aged and older dogs, especially if they are overweight. It occurs more commonly in some breeds, with Labradors and Schnauzers being at the top of the list.

Symptoms of diabetes in dogs include:
-increased thirst
-increased urination
-loss of bladder control
-increased appetite
-rapid weight loss
-weakness

Because most diabetic dogs develop cataracts, we have many patients that are diabetic.
Even pets that are controlled on insulin develop cataracts because the excess glucose is converted into sorbitol and this gets trapped in the lens of the eye. Cataract formation occurs rapidly causing sudden blindness. Diabetics should have a complete ophthalmic exam soon after diagnosis.

Here are some tips to reduce your pet's risk.

We've heard the complaints about e-collars aka the cone of shame and we empathize with you. However, many of our patients with eye diseases do require an e-collar as they heal or recover from surgery. We get asked about fabric or inflatable e-collars often but unfortunately they just don't do the job. With those types of e-collars, the eyes are still exposed and your pet can still rub their eyes on carpet and bedding. A hard, plastic e-collar is the standard when it comes to eye diseases and surgery but if you are looking for an alternative, here are some "ophthalmology approved" e-collar alternatives.
