With approaching, we want to remind you to keep your pets happy, healthy, and safe this holiday weekend with these tips:

☀️ Beat the heat: Dogs are susceptible to heat stroke. Make sure there is plenty of water and shade for your furry friends to keep cool.

🍽️ Protect your plate: Many foods we enjoy on Labor Day Weekend such as onions, corn cobs, chocolate, grapes, alcohol, and more can be toxic to pets or pose a choking hazard.

🍔 Guard the grill: Keep pets away from the grill, grill tools, lighter fluid, and matches to avoid burns and hazardous chemical ingestion.

🎆 Forego the fireworks: Not only can fireworks frighten pets, but they can also cause severe burns. Keep your pets calm and safe in a quiet, sheltered, and escape-proof area.

If your pet should experience an emergency over the holiday weekend, remember that NAVES is open for emergencies: (256) 850-0077

Pets can be curious, and sometimes that leads to swallowing indigestible objects which can result in a bowel or gastrointestinal obstruction.

The treatment for bowel obstruction can vary and depends on the severity of the condition. In some cases, a blockage may pass on its own. In others, surgery may be required.

Obstructions can be very serious and may even result in death, so it is important to see your veterinarian if you discover or suspect your pet swallowed something indigestible. NAVES is open nights, weekends, and holidays for emergencies: (256) 850-0077

💧🐾 Keep Your Pet Hydrated this Summer! 🌞🐶

As the temperatures rise, it's essential to ensure our furry friends stay hydrated and healthy. Here are some tips to keep them cool and comfortable:

1️⃣ Fresh Water Always: Keep a bowl of fresh water available at all times, whether at home or on the go.

2️⃣ Portable Water: Bring water and a travel bowl on walks or outings to keep your pet refreshed.

3️⃣ Cool Treats: Freeze treats like ice cubes with a bit of broth or fruit for a refreshing snack.

4️⃣ Limit Exercise: Exercise during cooler parts of the day to prevent overheating.

5️⃣ Know the Signs: Watch for signs of dehydration—excessive panting, lethargy, and dry gums.

Let's make sure our pets enjoy a safe and hydrated summer! 🐾💦 Share your hydration tips below!

Heading off to the pool, beach, or lake this summer with your furry friend? Check out these water safety tips to make sure your pet has fun while staying safe. ☀️

🔹 Pick a shallow spot to start out and stay close to the edge of the water.
🔹 Don’t force them. Throwing a pet in the water who doesn’t want to swim can be traumatic and may prevent them from enjoying the water later on.
🔹 Get in the water with them. When they start paddling with their front paws, lift their hind end so they understand how to float.
🔹 Keep them on a leash at first so they can’t stray too far away from you.
🔹 Many dogs love to swim, but some tire more easily than others. Consider having your dog wear a life jacket that is specifically made for animals.

🌡 Also, be sure to stay aware of the temperature! While swimming may cool you and your pet down, hot sand or pavement poses a threat to your pet's paws. If you can't hold the back of your hand to the ground for at least 10 seconds without feeling a burn, it's too hot for your pet to walk on!

Our dogs’ paws are just as sensitive as our feet. Here are some ways to protect your dog’s paws on hot pavement (or artificial grass):

🐾 Check the weather and take precautions before you take your pet outside. Asphalt temperatures can vary with air temperatures, cloud cover, wind, etc. For example, 77°F air temp could result in 125°F asphalt temp - and it only takes 60 seconds on 125°F asphalt for a dog's pads to burn.
🐾 Place the back of your hand on the ground for 10 seconds, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.
🐾 Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when surfaces are cooler.
🐾 If your pet can easily adapt to them, invest in a pair of booties to protect your pet's paws.

Symptoms of paw burn may include limping, refusing to walk, darker than usual or discolored pads, excessive licking or biting of feet, visible blisters, extreme redness, and missing skin or parts of pads.

🌲🐾 Embrace the great outdoors safely with your furry friends! 🐾🌲

As we hit the trails this summer, let’s keep our canine companions safe and happy. Here are some essential tips for hiking with dogs:

1️⃣ Leash Up: Keep your dog on a leash where required and even where not, to protect wildlife and ensure their safety.

2️⃣ Stay Hydrated: Carry enough water for both you and your dog. Remember, they get thirsty too!

3️⃣ Protect Those Paws: Check the trail terrain. Booties or paw protection can prevent injuries from rough surfaces or hot ground.

4️⃣ Watch for Wildlife: Keep an eye out for wildlife encounters. Leashing your dog helps protect both animals and your pet.

5️⃣ Leave No Trace: Pack out all waste, including your dog’s. Help keep trails clean for everyone.

Let’s make every hike memorable for all the right reasons. 🐶💚 Share your favorite dog-friendly trails below!

Keep Pets Cool & Safe! 🐶 💦

☀️ As temperatures rise, it's crucial to remember our furry friends! Leaving pets in hot cars can be dangerous—even deadly. Here are some tips to ensure their safety:

🚗 Never Leave Them Alone: Even with windows cracked, cars heat up fast. If it's too hot for you, it's definitely too hot for them.

💧 Hydrate & Shade: Always have water and a shady spot available for your pets if they must travel with you.

🏠 Plan Ahead: When running errands, leave pets at home if possible. They'll be much safer and happier.

Let’s keep our pets cool and comfortable this summer! 🐾💙 Spread the word and help save lives.
