Max Walking
Max has been in day school for about a few weeks now. His mom contacted us for some pretty bad anxiety- to the point where he wouldn’t walk at all and shut down and freeze if he had anything on his neck. Shiba Inu get a bad rep for being stubborn but we love working with independent thinkers and building confidence ! He is still a bit concerned about the environment around him, but we love how much progress he’s made in choosing to explore regardless of people and dogs walking by and trash bins being taken out around him.

Some dogs’ aversion to bathtime starts even before the water turns on. In these cases it’s super helpful to break the components of bathing down and getting dogs comfortable with just one thing at a time. Ozzy was fearful of getting in and out of the tub initially and would put on the brakes and needed to be picked up before a wash, but now he’s doing it all on his own!

Sometimes we trim nails- sometimes we train the dogs to do it themselves 😂. Cooperative care is when dogs participate in their own wellness care. Whether that’s offering an arm for blood draws, learning to show their teeth for inspection, or trimming their own nails like Tesla!

A few months ago we posted about Beau being nervous of the agility tunnel and thought it was about time we posted an update! Every so often since that post we’d stretch the tunnel out a bit longer, encouraged him to move faster through it by being really energetic, and look at how he zooms now!
Indie is here for her very first day of training. Like a lot of training requests we get in- she is pretty timid and wary of new people so follow along her first lesson of the day and see how we get new dogs comfortable with the trainers and start to build up confidence! She did a lot of exploring, some barking, got lots of treats, and by the end was willing to interact with a lot of new items and get some pets!
Happy Monday! Charlie is starting her day by working off that Thanksgiving turkey and improving her balance by doing push-ups on a fitness peanut

This was Beau’s first time making it all the way through a tunnel- sometimes they need some help in realizing the “scary stuff” isn’t so scary and we can help make small changes to boost their confidence!
Kickback Stand- Harry
Working on kickback stands with Harry (FIT 101). Kickback Stands are going from a sit into a stand by only moving the hind legs- it engages different muscle groups than their natural stand!
Sometimes, if you’re lucky you can spot the Kindermutt crew strolling down the streets of Kenmore. Look at how great Charlie and Enzo are doing together!
Monty & Drop It
Do you have a dog that likes to run around nonstop the second they have something in its mouth (whether it’s a dog toy or a shoe)? And once your pup does finally let go of it they like to race your hand to the object?
It’s such a common issue because dogs learn really young that most of the time their person says “drop it” it’s because a really fun game is about to come to an end- so we have to put in a conscious effort to make “drop it” part of the game.
Here we’re working with Monty on just that:
-Start pups on leash to stop the habit of running the zoomies because the more a dog is able to practice a behavior, the more they’re going to do the behavior. This also gets the dog into the habit of coming to you rather than you having to chase the dog
-Keep them relatively calm with a low voice and soft tosses relatively within a leash’s length away, that way they aren’t so excited or so enthralled by the toy that they can’t focus.
-Get their attention with a treat, wait until they make the decision to let the toy out of their mouth, then a mark and reward
-Hold onto that treat while they nibble on it until the toy is in your hand. This breaks that habit of them racing you to the item and trying to pick it back up before you
-Keep practicing until it becomes automatic and then start giving them more and more room until you can be 15ft+ feet away and they’ll still drop it. At that point then you can practice in new locations and off leash. Over time you can phase out food rewards, but always make drop it rewarding: petting, more playtime, excited praise are all great ways to reward without food.
Staff dog spotlight: Solaire is a 5 year old Shiba Inu and is also owned by Hayley. Here she is keeping fit and having a blast doing some parkour.
Next on our list of staff dogs is Riesling! She’s a 1 year old Doberman Pinscher owned by the day training manager Veronica. Riesling is a show dog and also loves to do tricks! Here’s her doing jump, stand stay, play dead, and roll over
We’re going to be doing a couple of staff dog spotlights! First up is Zuko, he’s a 2.5 year old Shiba Inu owned by Hayley, our resident primitive breed expert. Here he is showing off his heeling skills and ending in a “middle!”
Leia is in our TRK 301 course, and one of the tricks we teach pups is “Wipe Your Paws.” To get her interested in wiping her paws on a welcome mat, I first like to teach a dog to dig on cue. And while “dig” can be a starting point for “Wipe Your Paws”, it can also be a super helpful standalone command to teach your dog, especially in the spring. Many people ask me how to stop their dog from putting holes in garden or lawns, and this is a great solution! Trying to completely suppress a behavior that is hardwired into some dogs like digging can be like pushing a boulder uphill. Instead I recommend clients have a designated digging blanket/mat for their dogs to have a constructive outlet for the behavior. One that they’re rewarded for using so that when they get the urge to dig they go there rather than your flower beds. And if you don’t have a digger? It can still be a great trick to teach your dog to expend energy- when they catch on and dig quickly it expends a whole lot of energy in a very short amount of time.

To teach this I have treats under the blanket to keep Leia interested as well as in my hand to reward. Every time she moves her paw on the blanket I say “yes” and toss a treat next to her paw rather than from my hand so that the reward comes directly from her motion. If she gets distracted I place another treat under it and point her attention back to the blanket. I also move it if I notice it’s getting too bunched up. About halfway through this video when I notice that she is moving her paw more consistently and using her snout less is when I finally start to say the word “dig” as her cue. Over time you can raise the bar by only rewarding multiple paw movements, alternating paw moments, and finally increasing how long you expect your dog to dig before they get rewarded
This week might be rainy and cloudy so here’s a video of Uhura practicing loose leash walking outdoors to remind us of when it was warm and sunny.
