“Student Vets and Their Pets” showcases different vet students and the amazing animals who inspire them the most!

Brooklyn Westerfield is a second-year veterinary student from Paris, Illinois, interested in rural mixed animal practice. Her pet is Reagan.

Reagan was brought home during Brooklyn’s junior year of high school, after her mom mentioned her boss was looking to rehome one of their dogs, and she has been with their family ever since and is the most loyal companion!

Reagan truly has one of the most calm and loving demeanors. Brooklyn never really had to train her, Reagan just always knows what Brooklyn wants her to do or where to go before she even tells her. Reagan is an old soul with the occasional spout of zoomies and toy shredding.

“Student Vets and Their Pets” showcases different vet students and the amazing animals who inspire them the most!

Gabi Modica is a first-year veterinary student from Naperville, Illinois, interested in small animal general practice. Pesto is her cat.

Pesto came into the clinic Gabi worked at and was very sick with a UTI and dehydration. She ended up being owned by the animal shelter nearby, so Gabi went ahead and adopted her after falling in love with Pesto during her treatment.

Pesto doesn’t meow, but she likes to make what they call “Pesto noises”. Which are scarily similar to guinea pig noises.

“Student Vets and Their Pets” showcases different vet students and the amazing animals who inspire them the most!

Marium Demonte is a fourth-year veterinary student from Lynwood, Illinois, interested in small animal emergency. Mist is her cat.

Mist was a kitten brought into the hospital Marium was working at around 4-6 weeks of age, and Marium adopted him on Halloween in 2020.

The wonderful thing about Mist is how he is so loving. He will curl up with Marium all the time. He's also so silly.

“Student Vets and Their Pets” showcases different vet students and the amazing animals who inspire them the most!

Sarah Price is a third-year veterinary student from Littleton, Colorado, interested in shelter medicine. She has two dogs, Neville (pug mix) and Murph (boxer mix).

Neville was a very nervous guy when he came to the shelter from a house with too many animals. He picked Sarah’s lap to crawl into when he got his first bath and hasn't left her side since! Murph was a foster failure bottle baby; he was too cute, and she just couldn't let him go.

Neville and Murph have grown to be such good brothers, but don't let size fool you - Neville is definitely the boss! They do a great job supporting their momma through the highs and lows of vet school with lots of snuggles!

Meet Dr. Stephanie Bruner, a clinical assistant professor in the dermatology and otology service.

"I think of myself as a skin detective. Even though I may be seeing my fifth allergic cat of the day or my third dog with pemphigus this month, each one of them will have a nuance to their condition that I need to discover and address."

This August, fourteen first- and second-year veterinary students from the 2024 Summer Research Training Program attended the Veterinary Scholars Symposium, held in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The trainees spent 10 weeks this summer immersed in an independent research project which culminated in a poster presentation at the symposium.
Students worked in areas such as equine medicine, neurology, genetics, and cancer therapeutics.

Holly Black, one of the participants said “I developed data analysis, data visualization, and writing skills this summer that will be valuable in my future career in veterinary diagnostics, public health, and research. My favorite part of the conference was connecting with other students researching similar topics.”

At the conference, veterinary students from across the country had opportunities to hear talks about career tracks in veterinary medicine, residency programs, and cutting-edge research.

Happy National Honey Bee Day! 🐝

Did you know that veterinarians take care of bee populations? Since bees are considered a production animal, they fall into the realm of veterinarians.

We are happy to do our part to save the bees because they are a key player in the worlds biodiversity. They are a major pollinator, meaning they help sustain plant life, and therefore helping humans! They also produce honey and bee pollen, which are both beneficial to human health as well.

Do your part to help save the bees!
