Garlic is in! Sorry meant to take more action shots but forgot 😜A HUGE thank you to Victoria for helping make light work of 2000 cloves planted. Here are the steps for seed prep that I follow if you’re interested:

1) Break up bulbs into individual cloves. (Don’t worry if the skin comes off a little)

2) Sanitize seed. Why? Because it can help reduce disease issues down the road. Home gardeners can use a simple cheap vodka - soak and drain after 10mins

3) Liquid fertilizer soak.(Fish fertilizer is a common choice) We choose to soak our seed overnight and then plant the next day. Why? Because we want to grow the healthiest plants and increase the odds of consistent, nice sized bulbs next year. It is important that your Garlic develops a strong root system before the real colds sets in.

4) Seed Garlic. Depth can be a tricky one… Here at Kiwi Roots we end up with an overall depth of approx. 5-6” this includes 2-3” layer of compost mulch. This has worked well for us over the years. Ps - make sure you plant the clove with the tip to the sky!

Mulching note. We have tried a few things over the years.. Leaves didn’t work well for us, just blew away over winter and left beds exposed.. Often straw is used but we cannot find any chemical free straw and worry about bringing more w**ds onto the property, so choose to not use it. Finally, we choose to cover with heavy dose of compost and then after being in the ground a couple weeks we cover with a woven w**d fabric. W**d fabric is great because it still allows soil to breathe, allows moisture in and prevents exposed soil during the cold winter months. Just peel back in the spring and yet your Garlic thrive!

Many ways to do it.. This is just our process here at Kiwi Roots Farm. Hope this was helpful.

Cheers Dan

Morning folks! Though the season is slowly but surely winding down here at Kiwi Roots Farm, we still have a few important jobs to do. Yesterday I prepped all of our garlic beds for our 2025 garlic. A little over 2000 cloves will be planted in these beds, hopefully by next week! A few of you have asked how we prep our beds for garlic, so here is a little run down:

1) Clear old crop residue. (These beds have already had 3 crops this season!)
2) Flame w**d beds (not shown in picture)
3) Broad fork soil - This helps with aeration and soil compaction
4) Apply a healthy dose of high quality compost (we buy ours in bulk from Denali We Care in Ellington) Approx. 3” deep
5) Sprinkle in any amendments - We use a non-synthetic natural fertilizer like chicken manure
6) Mix in amendments
7) Planting! Will post those steps after we get ours in

Happy Tuesday. Cheers Dan
