See ya later Cukes! You were much loved while you lasted đŸ€Ș We managed a good long season this year compared to last, so that’s a win! Alas, they have succumbed to the bug pressure and rough weather. This bed will now transition into Arugula! Keep those crops turning. Catch ya at the stand. Cheers Dan .grown

Evening folks. I have a bunch seconds Garlic to move. 37lb total. Ideal for anyone looking to make garlic infused oil or minced garlic for the winter. It is seconds quality because it won’t store long term but still good garlic. Price is $6 per lb. Ideally looking for some to buy everything but willing to portion it out. Inquire at the farm stand or shoot me an email - [email protected]

Good morning folks! Hope everyone’s week is off to a solid start. Has been a busy start to the week here at Kiwi Roots. We will have no shortage of Salad Mix this week! Higher yields return with cooler weather. Got our first Spinach of the Fall transplanted. All of our other crops are looking great as Fall quickly approaches (not too quick we hope 😉) We will have our second planting of Potatoes, lots of Cilantro (finally 😝) Lots of Chard, Leek, Bok Choy, Turnips, Radishes, Ginger, Sweet Potatoes (đŸ€ž) and much more! Have to say a HUGE thank you to my father in law for helping me install our new Caterpillar tunnel. Pretty excited to finally get this built. This tunnel will be a huge help in protecting our last planting of tomatoes and then will transition to a winter tunnel of spinach and more! Other than that just trucking along here. Catch ya soon. Cheers Dan .grown

A bit of a bummer to say the least but all is not hopeless! Cherries are still doing ok and we have another planting of field tomatoes coming on soon! Will be tweaking some growing practices next year tomato wise but for now have to more forward. These tomatoes will come out and other Fall crops will go in 😉PS - see our Ginger??!! It seems to be doing pretty well so look forward to that later in Sept! Happy Monday folks. Cheers Dan .grown

Afternoon folks and Happy Friday! We are right back to hot and humid today.. Mother nature is throwing it at us in droves this season.. Oh well, part of the challenge they say 😜 Anyway, I went to harvest more Tomatoes today and discovered that we have suffered from a bunch of splitting on top of the blight that is already kicking our butt 🙃 We will be selling our tomatoes at a discounted rate and with a little luck our second planting will come in strong before too long! See you at the stand. Cheers Dan .grown

Heya folks! Happy Sunday. Hope you’re enjoying some relaxation time today (after you grab your veggies of course 😉) Just thought I’d give a wee update on how things are growing here at Kiwi Roots Farm. As you can see the planting doesn’t stop! (At least for a few more weeks that is!) These little seedlings will go in hopefully before the next rainy spell.. All in all, it has been a bountiful season so far but of course it is not always the case for a handful of crops. Unfortunately, our hoop house tomatoes are suffering from (i think blight) this basically aborts any new flowers which would equal new fruit.. Alas, it is not fixable at this point but luckily we have field plantings that should get us through! This is just one example of things that don’t work out sometimes when farming (there are plenty more) but is part of the challenge and what we sign up for when working with mother nature. There are certainly things i can do next year to hopefully improve growing conditions for a better outcome but for now we move forward and look ahead to plenty of other yummy crops to come. We thank you all again for the amazing support we get every week and we hope these updates can help everyone understand what it takes to grow food. It’s a real joy and we are grateful to be able to do it. Enjoy the remainder of your weekend. Cheers D&K .grown

Hey folks. Making the most of a cool evening with no rain showers. My mission was take out two beds of Sprouting Broccoli that have been producing great for many weeks but now they are no longer productive enough to keep in at this point. I am a big fan of finding ways to do things faster and to make most out of all of my many tools. You might see in the pictures that I have used an oscillating saw to cut the broccoli off at ground level leaving the roots in the ground. I then use my little electric Tilther to mix in the residue grass/weeds in with the top couple of inches of soil. Fortunately the weeds do not have seed heads! Anyway, i’ll leave these beds alone a few days to dry out and then I will come in with fresh compost and plant some Fall Carrots đŸ„• These beds will be on their 3rd crop of the season and will end it with their 4th crop being Winter Rye. It always amazes me just how much we can produce throughout the growing season here in Connecticut. Have a nice evening. Cheers Dan .grown

Good morning folks! Tomatoes are in abundance right now, so if you are a buttered toast with a big slab of fresh tomato on top type of person then Kiwi Roots has you covered! 🍅🍅 I also found a little Salad Mix! We won’t have a ton of Lettuce but in another week or so it should be back in full swing hopefully. Have a great day and maybe we will see you at the stand. Cheers Dan .grown

Hey folks! Busy couple of days here at Kiwi Roots Farm. Trying to capitalize on the overcast and drizzly days. What’s great about this weather is we can plant anytime of the day and young transplants can get settled in before the next wave of heat (hopefully) Some of the plantings include, turnips, bok choy, daikon radish, watermelon radish, rutabaga, beets and more đŸ€Ș Next planting of cukes is producing well, sweet potatoes look super healthy but time will tell đŸ€žItalian Sweet Peppers are coming along. Still a long season ahead but it’s worth it to see everyone happy to pick up their weekly vege. Have a nice evening and catch ya soon. Cheers Dan .grown

Hey folks! Just got in another planting of Lettuce after close today. Unfortunately, due to high demand and generally lower yields during peak summer. We are out of Salad Mix! We still have some Romaine available and Red, Head Lettuce for Sunday but I think it will be possibly two weeks until the next Lettuce harvest can happen! Until then, please stop by and check out all the other goodies we have because there are plenty. That’s it from me, off to plant Arugula next! Cheers Dan .grown

First couple of beds of Onions and Shallots are now inside our wee greenhouse to begin the curing process before the rain comes. Still a few beds to go but it feels good to have at least started the harvest! Oh and to the left of the shot is my ‘just for fun’ Fig trial. I am trellising the fig inside the greenhouse to see if we can actually get some figs this summer! Have a nice evening. Cheers Dan .grown

Hey everyone 😋 Summer is humming right along! Today, I have starting harvesting our shallots and white onions. Right behind these will be our red onions and yellow. Fall crops are underway in the nursery and before too long we will have baby bok choy and turnips again. Other exciting news we should have a larger quantity of Tomatoes available this week including cherry/cocktail mix. Stay cool out there and catch you soon. Cheers Dan .grown

Good morning folks and Happy Friday! As the summer rolls on, new veggie options become available. New this week we have fresh, white sweet onions and the first of our tomatoes!! Tomatoes will probably sell out fast but I promise more will begin to roll out of our greenhouse each week moving forward. So, butter that toast, stock up on salt and pepper and get ready for some local, delicious tomatoes! Other things to mention, I have been starting our Fall crops in our nursery!! Before too long we will be enjoying Baby Bok Choy again, Arugula, Turnips, Daikon Radish, Rutabaga and the list goes on but enough ramble from me! Hope to see you this weekend. Cheers Dan .grown

Sometimes, actually often in farming you have to improvise or make do with what you have.. Ideally, i would like to install shutter vents into our High Tunnel at some point but in a pinch, to vent out all that hot summer air, I simply popped 4 screws, dropped this poly panel down and voila! Home made vents will do đŸ€Ș Happy Monday folks. Cheers Dan .grown

Heya folks! Garlic harvest is underway. A HUGE shout out to my wife’s family for all putting in a solid afternoon’s labor for ‘love’ I am so appreciative of these great humans :) With over half our Garlic now beginning to cure we will hopefully harvest the remainder next week. While they dealt with the Garlic, I worked on getting our last planting of Tomatoes in for the season! This time of year is another crunch time with many crops beginning to mature and needing to be harvested and a bunch of Fall crops getting planted in the nursery. 😅 Catch ya soon. Cheers Dan .grown
