Disclaimer: this is not a horse. It’s still a fascinating animal, no? This photo reminds me what you can do and where you can go with a career in veterinary medicine.

Recently I found out that I passed Fellowship exams in Equine Medicine. A dream come true. It means Scope Equine will now be a specialist service for veterinarians, their patients and clients.

Whether it’s a case of weight loss or recurrent colic, metabolic/endocrine issues, respiratory disorders, neonatal/reproductive disease, poor performance or any other medical issues, that’s what we are here for- to deliver on-site specialist advice and diagnostics across Victoria.

It may have seemed very quiet over here but it’s been pretty busy behind the scenes whilst I prepared for and sat ANZCVS Fellowship exams.

Yesterday I found out that I passed the exams, which enables me to register as an Equine Medicine specialist.

It makes me so proud to announce that Scope Equine will now be a specialist veterinary service, and will continue to deliver gold-standard evidence-based care to all its equid patients.

Looking forward to getting back on the road and catching up with both regular and new clients 🐴 🩺

If you want to know more about Scope Equine please get in touch- I would love to hear from you.

AS OF TODAY FEI HORSE WHISKERS STAY:
As of 1st July 2021 a penalty of disqualification will be issued if horses are found to have their sensory hairs clipped, shaven or in any other way removed at an FEI competition. This applies to all FEI Events, including the Tokyo Games.

(unless individual sensory hairs have been removed by a veterinarian to prevent pain or discomfort for the Horse).

Recurrent colic in horses 🐴

Fair enough. That being said, there are quite a few causes of recurrent colic in horses and they are not just related to the gastrointestinal tract.
In some cases a definitive diagnosis may not be able to be made without exploratory laparotomy, but there are still diagnostic procedures that can help identify the most likely cause

Tuesday Trivia - Did you know...

Whilst the horse’s entire face has heightened sensitivity and benefits from gentle petting and grooming, the whiskers are exquisitely responsive. They send messages at over 250 miles per hour to the brain to help the horse make sense of its environment and compensate for its blind spots in front.

Although trimming the horse’s whiskers used to be de rigueur for show riders, they’re now left intact, as we know how beneficial they are to the horse. In fact, the FEI has new rules that go into effect as of July 2021 that prohibit horses from competing in FEI events if the horse’s sensory hairs have been clipped or shaved. Exceptions to this rule include hairs that have been removed by a veterinarian to prevent pain or to allow veterinary treatment.

The next time you’re enjoying time with a horse, watch how it uses its whiskers so carefully. You’ll be glad you let them grow and that they’re now protected in competition as well!

In 2016 & 2018 I was fortunate to be a part of the veterinary course team for the (where the second photo was also captured, showing a herder and his horses in preparation for the race). What an experience!
Whilst travel is off the cards to these sorts of places for now, hopefully some time in the near future we can take the term ‘ambulatory medicine’ to a whole new level and return to Mongolia and work with these hardy amazing little beasts

Do you wonder why there are so many treatments for equine sarcoids? It’s because there is no one treatment that has been found to be consistently reliable for all the types of sarcoids (there are 6). Here are the other reasons (sit down with a cuppa for this one ☕️):
- the type of sarcoid
- the location of the sarcoid
- sarcoid extent
- duration
- previous interference
- prognosis for remission
- treatment logistics
- value of the horse
- cost of treatment
- duration of treatment
- patient & owner compliance
Whilst equine sarcoids have been associated with bovine papilloma virus (BPV) they are more correctly a skin neoplasm, and therefore need to be treated as such

Well that’s a wrap! 🐎

2020 has been slow and steady, but I can honestly say I did not foresee starting up my own business, especially amidst a global pandemic 😳 .

So far we’ve met some wonderful vets and seen some interesting cases. To those vets who have reached out- thank you for your support and positive response. Looking forward to bringing our services to more practices and patients across Victoria in the New Year.

I’ll be taking a few days away from my ultrasound to spend with family but will be back on track after Boxing Day. In the meantime, I’m here via phone and email.

Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas with family and loved ones.

Ouch 😣

These radiographs show acute laminitic changes, most obviously rotation of the pedal bone. This horse has the typical traits of Equine Metabolic Syndrome- obesity (in the face of limited feed), a cresty neck, regional fat deposits and now laminitis.

If you think that a patient of yours might be in this category we’d love to discuss it with you, so please get in touch 📞🦓

Foal Friday 🐴

We all want to see healthy, strong foals on the ground. Even before they are born, there are ways to maximise the chance of having a healthy foal.

There’s nothing more devastating than losing a foal. Monitoring high risk pregnancy mares is something we are passionate about, and want to talk more to you about!

If you’ve had a case where a mare has aborted, she could be an ideal candidate for monitoring through her next pregnancy. Regular ultrasound scans of both the placenta and the foal (to monitor placental thickness and appearance, as well as the activity and size of the foal) allows early intervention to help increase chances of carrying the foal to full term.

With breeding underway, if you have a mare that you are concerned about please get in touch for a chat via📱 or 📧

Had a great day yesterday on the road looking at some interesting cases 🚙 🩺

We are here to help with all types of medical conditions, including cardiac disease. Our hand-held ECG makes screening of potential arrhythmias in the field easy. If further investigation is needed, a resting ECG and echocardiography can be performed on-site.

The reason for setting up Scope Equine was to make diagnosis of equine medical conditions easily accessible to vets across Victoria 🐎

Please get in contact if you want to know more about our service via phone or email. Happy Saturday!

Happy Friday! Looking forward to getting out on the road this morning meeting vets and talking about how we can help them out with their equine medicine cases.

We are an ambulatory service available across Victoria, which allows us to conveniently work up most medical conditions in-clinic and on-farm with the use of a portable ultrasound, endoscopy/gastroscopy and radiography.

Please get in touch via phone or email if you’d like to know more about Scope Equine. We’d love to hear from you!

Posted • On this Veterans' Day we want to take a moment to thank all the brave men and women who served our country and who continue to serve.

In honor of the animals who assist their human partners in the armed forces, we hope you'll enjoy reading the story of Nelson, pictured below with his soldier.

Nelson was a real war horse who served in the Warwickshire Royal Horse Artillery during World War I by pulling the medium-calibre guns and howitzers which were deployed close to the front line. Nelson's handler and driver was Alfred Henn, who kept a photograph of the war horse he had cherished as a young soldier until his death in 2000, at the age of 103.

Speaking before he died, Alfred recalled Nelson's unflinching bravery despite only having one eye. With Alfred riding him, and the full weight of a gun carriage behind him, the noble horse galloped directly into the gunfire. Nelson was Alfred's only confidant amid the horror of battle, and also had an uncanny sense of danger that served both soldier and horse well.

Horses were a valuable commodity during WWI, but it's said the terror they shared in those days forged incredible friendships between the animals and their humans. It was a very physical relationship, and soldiers and horses often slept together in the mud to ward off the cold.

This horse had a recent history of interstate travel and presented because of a persistent cough, nasal discharge as well as some interesting blood work changes. Ultrasound helped confirm the presence of consolidated lung, as seen here
