I Love it when it rains, most don’t go out in the rain so we get the park to ourselves to practice recall, engagement, play with handler (not making own sniff games or entertainment from other dogs) building a bond & trust.
Jacks been to the park three times a day and let off lead (The first day it was actually 5 because he was bonkers) he still doesn’t quite trust that I’m not going to just remove his freedom & his fun. So I’m taking him everyday to be let off.
In turn it’s burning off excess hyper energy & lessening the novelty of being off lead. We had to start building this engagement with a long line. I’m taking his breakfast so he’s motivated to come to me, we play with toys here. WE play. I don’t let other dogs entertain my dog. I’m really selective with if/when/what dog plays with my dog, and even then I don’t not want them engaging in rough or too much play. It devalues me. Aren’t I mean. No, I want my dog to listen to me, play with me, come when called. But each to their own.
Jack has no free access to toys or left to graze at home. Puzzle toys, chews, all the gimmicky crap you are sold is not a substitute for exercise.
Giving him all this stuff for free is like you being given your pay check - would you go to work? So making him motivated is key, or I wouldn’t be able to get him to do anything.
Jacks starting to behave like a ‘normal’ dog. Day 8 of 24 hour management. Jacks starting to earn more & more freedoms.
My best advice is start off strict with your puppy. I see wayyyyy too many dogs being allowed to do whatever because we love them & want to see them happy….but you know what, no guidance does not equal a happy dog. It equals a confused, hyper, over exuberant, stressed out, over stimulated, poor mannered dog. As our lives are becoming busier, I’m seeing more & more dogs like this.
Personally I prefer good manners & calm & that takes time & work.

The secret to your success in training your dog, lies in your daily routine from when you bring your new puppy home.
What is your dogs daily routine?
Waking you up barking & crying?
Running around the house like a mad thing?
Zoomies at the park with other dogs?
Or,
Bonding with you through play & training?
Working on sits, drops, stays, come when called throughout the day?
Rest periods, down time, matt training, calm zone in the house & all the slow stuff?
