🐍Snake bite survivors! 🐍

Henry and Nala have both recently been treated for snake envenomation at NEVS, requiring snake antivenom and 24 hour ICU care in hospital. The good news, is both had a full recovery and have gone home to their families.

These dogs are from different households but both were bitten by snakes in their backyards. Nala was found with a snake but Henry wasn't and he first indication he was unwell was when he developed vomiting and discoloured urine.

Because snakes bites can occur when dogs are unsupervised and the snake can often escape, it is important to know the signs of snake bite in pets.

Signs include:
❌ Sudden weakness followed by collapse
❌ Shaking or muscle twitching
❌ Vomiting
❌ Loss of bladder and bowel control
❌ Paralysis
❌ Bloody, red or black coloured urine.

If you think your pet has been bitten by a snake you should
✅ Keep them calm and quiet and take them to a vet immediately.
✅ If your pet has discoloured urine and it's easy to collect a sample, bring it in too.
❌ If you find a bite mark , do NOT wash the wound or apply a tourniquet
❌ If you find a snake, don't try to catch or kill it.

Chances of recovery are much greater if your pet is treated early, with some pets making a recovery within 48 hours. Pets left untreated or with delayed treatment have a much lower survival rate and many die.

If you are worried your pet may be been bitten by a snake, you can call NEVS on

Why does every vet clinic warn about the dangers of toxic and poisonous items around Easter?

This is why.
Across our 4 hospitals, SASH 24/7 Emergency saw a whopping 99 cases of pets who had ingested a toxin, poison or foreign object. A large number of these cases were dogs, who had eaten toxic foods (chocolate and grapes/raisins/hot cross buns) and non-food items (toys, rat bait, batteries, medications, sanitary products), as well a couple of cats who had been exposed to lilies, and a number of rabbits who ate chocolate and chocolate wrapping.

An interesting fact to note is that these are only the cases in which owners witnessed the ingestion. It excludes cases which were investigated and later discovered to be one of the above reasons.

If you suspect your pet has eaten something it shouldn't have, please bring them to SASH North Ryde, Western Sydney, Central Coast, or Adelaide immediately. We are open 24/7, each and every day, and are well equipped to deal with all holiday hazards.

Species of the Week – Australian Brush-turkey (Alectura lathami) 🦃

The species is common along the east coast of Australia and can be found all the way from Cape York Peninsula in QLD down to the suburbs of Sydney and the Illawarra region in NSW.

Australian Brush-turkeys incubate their eggs in a large mound of organic matter (containing a mixture of soil and leaf litter) than can reach up to one metre high. These mounds are built by males.

To ensure the mound maintains a constant average temperature of around 33°C the male will add or remove leaf litter using his large feet and powerful legs to rake up material.

Brush-turkey chicks require no parental care once they hatch and are able to move about and forage soon after they emerge from the nest mound.

Well well well.. hello pesky grass awn, you have no place here!

This is your reminder to check your pets for grass seeds or awns. This awn was found on this dog's back, under the harness strap (which has been pulled to the side in this image) . As you can see, the awn attaches to the fur. If not removed, a grass awn (or seed) may migrate under the skin and can cause dangerous infection and even migrate to vital organs.

It's certainly not uncommon that we see patients with grass seed/awn foreign bodies. We've seen them in early stages and in life threatening stages.

Please, always keep this in mind! 🐾

Sometimes we spend hours, just sitting near dogs. Please give all dogs the space and time they need, especially when coming to our Shelter to meet them and after adopting them and taking them home. 🐾
