If you have an itchy dog, you've likely heard of the two biggest anti-itch medications out there: Apoquel and Cytopoint

These medications have been a godsend for dog owners and veterinarians for several years now but what do they do?
They work to target the itch pathway in our doggy patients and family members in different ways but have been shown to cause MINIMAL to NO EFFECT on the immune system or organs. Prior to these medications, use of steroids was the only effective way to provide any noticeable reduction in itchy skin conditions. Unfortunately, steroids, such as prednisone, are well known to cause damage to organs such as the liver and kidneys so having Apoquel and Cytopoint available as anti-itch tools has been important for dogs requiring long-term supportive care to fight off that pesky itch.

For more information on these medications, please follow the links below:

Attention Dog owners traveling to the USA 🇺🇸:

Newest update on regulations for travel from Canada to the USA have been simplified and finalized. Please follow the link below to the CDC website for more info.

Updates to CDC’s August 1 dog importation rule: If you are bringing a dog into the US from a dog rabies-free or low-risk country, you now only need to fill out the simple CDC Dog Import Form. Technical issues with this form have been resolved. Be sure to fill out the form in order because how you answer each question influences what you see in the other sections of the form. Other forms are no longer needed for these dogs.

The requirements for dogs arriving from high-risk countries have not changed, and these dogs are still required to have additional documents. Read the full requirements: www.cdc.gov/dogtravel

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month!

Itching, licking, chewing, and rubbing are not necessarily personality traits...your pet could be suffering from a skin condition or allergies.

Here are some signs that that pesky itch could be something more:
🐾 Redness, excess moisture of skin, or hair loss over the affected area
🐾 Dry, flakey areas that don't clear up after a bath
🐾 Red bumps, lumps, scaly patches
🐾 Itching that is worse in the spring or fall

If your pet is experiencing any of the above issues, please call us to book an appointment.

To all of our corn loving owners and their dogs: BEWARE THE CORN COB!

🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽
Unfortunately corn cobs are one of the most common foreign body surgeries we see at this time of the year because owners often forget that dogs love to swallow things whole! With London's new green bins we ask all of our dog owners to please be extra careful on walks especially on garbage days.

As always, please call the clinic at 519-472-3770 if any concerns!

SUPER IMPORTANT UPDATE ON TICKS IN ONTARIO!
🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷

Now that ticks have become endemic to Ontario, we have been seeing an increased rate of tickborne disease in our pets.

From January 2024 - June 2024 we have already seen over 10,000 cases of lyme disease in our dogs!!!

Please remember, tickborne disease not only affects our pets but also ourselves and preventing ticks on our furry family members means reducing ticks in our households.

Another reason to keep our pets on tick prevention year round!

Going away for the summer?

Here are some helpful tips for pet owners to consider before going on vacation:

🐾Ensure all vaccines are up to date. All quality boarding facilities require proof of updated vaccines. If you will be travelling with your pet, ensure that all vaccines are given according to the requirements of your destination. Some countries are very strict with their vaccine requirements and timing of vet exams relative to date of departure.

🐾If traveling to another country with your pet, ensure any appropriate documents have been filled out ahead of time to avoid delays. Many countries require specific export papers to be signed by a veterinarian. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for export of animals and should be contacted before you travel to ensure all necessary documents are in order. Visit the following website for more info:

🐾Be sure to refill any ongoing prescriptions. If traveling abroad, be sure to look into regulations with respect to carrying any medications.

🐾Be sure to have enough food to get through your time away plus at least one months worth in case any delays come up.

🐾If leaving your pet at kennel, be sure to have at least one emergency contact that will be close by that can act on your behalf should a medical emergency come up.

🐾Inform your regular veterinary clinic of your travel plans and of your emergency contact so that they may legally make medical decisions on your behalf while you are away or not immediately available.

🐾Ensure your microchip information is current (call microchip company to update any change in address, phone numbers, names, etc)

🐾HAVE A GREAT TIME AWAY! 😀

ATTENTION ALL DOG OWNERS!!
New rules for travel into the U.S. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

05/06/2024

🪱What is it?
-Heartworm is a parasite that lives in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of mammalian species and is transmitted from one animal to the next by the mosquito.
-Heartworm is a worm that can grow up to 1 foot long!

🪱How harmful is it?
-Since heartworm primarily resides in the heart of its host, it can lead to lasting damage to this organ as well as the lungs and arteries even after treatment.
-If left untreated, heartworm is a potentially fatal infection.

🪱What animals are at risk?
-Dogs are the natural or definitive host of the heartworm parasite. Heartworm is able to complete its full lifecycle within the dog after transmission by the mosquito
-Other animals that can become infected include: cats, ferrets, and other mammal species, including wolves, coyotes, foxes, sea lions. In most cases, a heartworm infection in animals other than the dog are not severe and are usually self limiting.

🪱What can we do about this parasite?
-PREVENTION of this infection is key. Having your pet on heartworm preventative medication monthly is the safest way to keep them parasite free.
-Annual blood testing should be performed regardless of being on a heartworm preventative to ensure the medication is working effectively.
-Treatment if necessary. Treatment is usually a complicated regime of regular medications and injections that can unfortunately harm vital organs such as the liver and kidneys and strict cage rest for weeks or months. Because of this, prevention of the heartworm parasite is the best course of action.

🪱Do we have heartworm in Canada?
-According to recent data, heartworm can be found in every province of Canada but is most concentrated in Southern Ontario

An important message to all of our pet owners and humans too!

Ticks are now endemic to the London area meaning that they are here ALL year! With our temperatures in Southwestern Ontario remaining moderate for most of the year, ticks have had an opportunity to establish themselves in our environment. Ticks are for sure most common and concentrated in ungroomed natural areas (forest, tall grass, around the river) but are being found more and more in our own backyards!

Since ticks are becoming more and more common, we are slowly starting to see a rise in tickborne infections too (things like Lyme disease). Because of this, it is even more important to protect ourselves and our pets from these pesky parasites.

What we can do to protect our pets:
🕷 regular tick checks
🕷 tick borne disease blood testing
🕷 use tick killing or tick repelling products
***always consult your vet before starting your pet on any kind of medication as some can be toxic to your pet***

Great video explaining how to brush your cat's teeth at home!

Please note, in this video, the cat is quite well behaved and seems to tolerate oral handling quite well which is definitely not the case for many of our cats!
The best way to go about starting off with brushing is to go slowly and stop when your cat has reached his or her limit. Using a towel wrap to help with restraint is often quite useful and helps with making sure your cat feels safe and secure.
