Brachycephalic breeds in rabbits ๐Ÿฐ
Many people are aware of the breathing difficulties that can affect brachycephalic (short nosed) dog breeds, but did you know that there are many rabbits who are also classed as brachycephalic?
Over the years rabbits have been bred to become smaller, rounder, โ€˜cuterโ€™ which has led to the skull formation of some breeds to be different from their rabbit ancestors. It is important for all rabbits to have regular dental checks, but even more so for those with smaller flatter face shapes.
Providing your rabbit with good quality hay is vital to help wear down their teeth and prevent dental disease.

Rabbits & Guinea Pigs
Another common misconception is that rabbits and guinea pigs can live together. This is sadly not true. Not only do they have different dietary requirements they frequently fight and can pass diseases between each other. Rabbits are best kept in pairs, usually a neutered male & neutered female is the best pairing, however same-sex pairs can be compatible if they are both neutered, as well as trios and larger groups. Bonding is not an easy process, and we recommend speaking with an experienced person, or reading up on the process before attempting this yourself.

Did you know? Rabbits are fastidious groomers ๐Ÿฐ
They insist on keeping themselves clean & tidy. Rabbits do most of their grooming themselves. You do not need to bath rabbits. Rabbits fur is odourless, so if you think your rabbit smells, make sure to check if they can clean their bottoms. If they canโ€™t, it may be due to obesity or arthritis (please contact your vet for a check / diagnosis). In these circumstances you can gently clean your rabbitโ€™s bottom, make sure not to submerge your rabbit into water and always pat dry afterwards.

GIVE ME SPACE!
When you go into a pet shop, you might notice a row of cages & hutches marketed toward rabbits. These products will have enticing names like โ€˜deluxe rabbit homeโ€™ and show images of happy rabbits on the packaging. The problem? Almost every single one of these โ€˜rabbit cagesโ€™ is much too small for rabbits. Rabbits need a lot of room. They are active creatures and require space to be able to display natural behaviours such as hopping, stretching on hind feet & lying down. The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund recommends a minimum enclosure area of 3m x 2m x 1m for a pair of average-sized rabbits, regardless of whether they are housed indoors or outdoors ๐Ÿฐ

DONโ€™T WAIT, VACCINATE! ๐Ÿ’‰
Rabbits need to be regularly vaccinated to protect them against three potentially deadly diseases:
๐Ÿฐ Myxomatosis
๐Ÿฐ Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease-1 (RVHD-1)
๐Ÿฐ Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease-2 (RVHD-2)
The first vaccinations should be at around 5-7 weeks of age, after that they should have a booster injection every year.
Our vets recommend vaccinating all pet rabbits, including house rabbits.
This is included as part of our Pet Health Club for Rabbits, follow the link to find out more

Did you know? Carrots are bad for rabbits! ๐Ÿฅ•
Contrary to popular belief, carrots are in fact not very healthy for rabbits. They are full of sugar and can lead to obesity. A better option is to give your rabbit the green stem from a carrot or an alternative green veg or herb. Small 1cm slices of carrot can be given as a treat but should be done so sparingly.
Letโ€™s keep the carrots for the cartoons! ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿฅ•

Are rabbits nocturnal? ๐ŸŒ…
If you have a pet rabbit, you may have noticed that they tend to sleep a lot during the daytime. Or maybe you noticed that you only see wild rabbits outside when youโ€™re out for a run in the morning. Many animals are more active at night-time, so you think maybe rabbits are nocturnal. Rabbits are NOT nocturnal. You will often see them sleeping through the afternoon, but they sleep in the middle of the night too. So, when are rabbits active? Rabbits are ๐‚๐ซ๐ž๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐š๐ซโ€‹, which means they have the most energy in the hours around sunrise and sunset.

Harmful to Rabbits
Although rabbits are foragers in the wild, pet rabbits are not as instinctual as their ancestors and therefore it is vital to be aware of what harmful plants or flowers may be growing in your garden.
Plants that could harm your rabbit this summer are listed below:
โ€ข The most poisonous plants for rabbits include Azalea, Bittersweet, Buttercups, Daffodils, Deadly Nightshade, Figwort, Foxglove, Hemlock, Meadow Saffron, Poppies, and Ragwort.
โ€ข Other poisonous garden plants for rabbits include Begonias, Chrysanthemums, Clematis, Dahlias, Delphinium, Hyacinth, Iris, Lily of the Valley, Lupins, Morning Glory, Primrose, Rhododendron, Sweet Peas (there is a rabbit-safe variety), and Tulips.
โ€ข Garden-grown human foods that rabbits shouldnโ€™t eat include Apple Pips, Garlic, Onion, Potato Plants, Rhubarb (all of it), and Tomato Plants.
โ€ข Most evergreen leaves are poisonous to rabbits and some lighter coloured lettuces (e.g. iceberg) can harm them too.

Itโ€™s also: Feline Hypertension Awareness month! (High blood pressure in cats) ๐Ÿฑ

Did you know that an estimated 1 in every 5 cats over the age of 9 years suffers from hypertension?
Just like in people, high blood pressure can go undetected for a long time. This is a dangerous condition that can lead to many long term ill effects on the body.

Signs that your cat may be suffering from high blood pressure include;
๐Ÿพ Sleeping more or being less active
๐Ÿพ Not sleeping at night/pacing
๐Ÿพ Changes in behaviour
๐Ÿพ Meowing more than usual
๐Ÿพ Increased drinking
๐Ÿพ Changes in eyesight/ Bumping into objects

Luckily, when caught early enough, there are treatments available to help control blood pressure and significantly reduce the long term risks.

Measuring a cat's blood pressure is quick and painless and we can perform this test as part of our senior wellness clinics, suitable for cats over 7 years of age.

(We also run senior wellness clinics for dogs)

* Senior wellness clinics *

Did you know we run popular senior wellness clinics?
During this 40 minute appointment, our nurse will perform a physical examination, measure your petโ€™s blood pressure, check a urine sample and take a blood sample to measure kidney, liver, thyroid (cats) and multiple other parameters to check that your pet is not suffering from underlying disease.

Our wellness clinics are designed to detect disease early, ensuring the best possible outcome for your pet and cost 85 pounds.

Our nurses are fully qualified to carry out laser treatment on your pet. Laser therapy is used to treat a variety of inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis and muscle pain. Laser therapy can also be very useful to speed up wound healing, reduce scar tissue and improve nerve function.

Handsome Raffi was in recently to have laser therapy as part of his treatment for joint disease. As you can see, he enjoys his treatment and we think he is rocking those protective glasses ๐Ÿ’™
