Last month you may remember that Debra, Annabel, Olga, Sophie, Kayleigh, Holli, Alessandra and Emily ran the Pretty Muddy 5k in aid of Cancer Research, and we have just found out the total raised was £1,355!

Thank you very much to everyone that donated 🥰

May has been Veterinary Nurse awareness month! Nurses work closely with our vets 24/7 365 days to provide the best possible care to your equine friends. Equine nurses provide support to patients, administer medications and some treatments, perform diagnostic imaging, carry out wound care and bandaging, assist in theatre, and you may even see them out on the road in an ambulatory role! This is just a few of the many things nurses can do! Meet our Nurses

Our Equine vet care assistants are invaluable to the daily workings of our Equine clinic. So we decided to strap a go-pro to them so we could show you some of the things they get up to!
Hope you don't get travel sick watching!

Spring is finally here! 🌱🌈🌞

As the weather is finally improving - the grass is growing! Vet Joao has put together some information of things to look out for and how to prevent!

Although it’s great to have warmer days and to be able to allow horses to graze longer, this is not without risks.

While horses and ponies usually need 1.5-2% of their body weight in forage and feed to maintain body weight, they will not hold back when it comes to eating Spring grass with horses eating as much as 3% of their body weight and ponies up to 5%. While grass might seem the most natural forage diet for horses and ponies, these numbers explain why lush grass it can stir up health concerns. Let’s review a few of these problems:

🌱Gassiness and loose manure: the high levels of sugar and starch may rapidly ferment in the hindgut, changing the microbial balance, and potentially leading to pathological diarrhoea
🌱Colic: the low fibre content of lush grass can potentially lead to an upset digestive system
🌱Laminitis: this is dependent on the individual horse and it's susceptibility, but it is thought to be related to endotoxin production during hindgut microbial balance changes and also due to insulin dysregulation
🌱Wood-chewing: because lush grass is low, horses look for other sources of fibre including wooden fences and bark from trees

Preventive measures:

- Gradually introduce the horse to the new paddock where the grass is lush. Starting with 30min daily and increasing by 30min every second day
- Strip-grazing
- Grazing muzzles are a very effective way of slowing down grass consumption
- Provide a forage with a high fibre content such as hay
- Feeding a research-proven hindgut balancer with probiotics (Saccharomyces cerevisae) during springtime effectively reduces the risks of colic, gassiness and loose manure

It's finally looking a bit brighter out there! 🌞🌱🌾

Audevard UK have sent us this fantastic guide of what types of pollen to expect when, which will be super helpful especially coming into spring!

Combined with environmental management, feed supplements support the respiratory system in sensitive horses and provide comfort.

We now stock the Audevard range at our Brooke clinic which includes -

Balsamic Control - provides long-lasting comfort of the lower respiratory tract

Balsamic Air - provides FAST relief of the upper respiratory tract

Give us a phone on 01508 558228 to order either of these fantastic supplements, or for any further advice.

Introducing Dr Gracie Scotcher, MRCVS

Some of you may have already met the wonderful Gracie out on the road, but we thought we would introduce her to you all properly!

Gracie graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in July 2023, and started with us at Chapelfield in September later that year. She divides her time between Brooke and Long Stratton doing both equine and small animal work, with medicine and ophthalmology being particular interests.

Fun fact - only 2 weeks ago she completed the Brighton Marathon in a super time of 3 hours 42 minutes! 🏃‍♀️
