Update: baby calf nursed it's mom for first time this morning, standing and walking w its splint. They have rejoined the herd.
We had a unusual patient this week. A special thanks to Alexis and Dana for getting this little girl a little stronger.

NO dog should grow old unspayed. Even a breeding animal should be spayed when she is no longer breeding. It will save you thousands and maybe the life of your pet.
Surgery of the night. Dana and I just removed this infected uterus from a 31 lb pit. It was 14.2 percent of its body weight! It might be a record for me.

Surgery of the month: this little Yorkie had a puppy stuck in her va**na on the weekend. Taken to a emergency hospital where they recommended humane euthanasia (rightly so) because her va**na and surrounding skin was necrotic, dieing tissue.
Well, she was a fighter and after sloughing the dieing tissue was brought to me for a opinion on reconstruction.
The photos speak for themselves. These kind of surgeries are very challenging, the outcome is never guaranteed and sometimes require multiple surgeries. The sicker the patient the more likely a poor outcome, I was lucky in this case and a healthy happy little dog has a new lease on life.

We at Erdman are unfortunately very short staffed doctor wise. It is only myself full-time and Dr Wu part-time. We made the painful decision to stop taking new clients so that we could continue to provide care to our existing clients and their pets.
We have made some staffing improvements to get the phone answered more promptly and will be using Pet Desk to make appointments more and more. We have started requiring appointment deposits because of the excessive number of 'No Shows' over the last year. These 'No Shows' take appointments from the clients that need there pets seen.
As I near retirement age it has occurred to me that one day I will not be able to work the hours demanded of a veterinarian owning a hospital. Therefore I have started searching for my replacement. Hopefully I will find another veterinarian that has the same love of the profession, the pets and the clients that have made my career so rewarding.
I should add that I expect the new owner will keep me around for a few years. :) I am just ready to step down from ownership responsibilities not fully retire.

Surgery of the month. This is Rayne, she had a rapidly growing malignant tumor on the back of her head. She came to Erdman for a second opinion and reasonable surgery fee. Thankfully we were able to help her because bulldogs have plenty of extra skin!!

Comcast has failed to get out internet back on line and this has put our phones out of service.
We are adding a cell number to circumvent this problem.

Heat strokes have become more common than ever. Yesterday we had two French Bull Dogs have heat strokes. One was DOA on arrival w a temp over 110, the other a temperature of 108.
With the increasing popularity of the bully breeds and French Bull dogs Heat Stroke deaths are likely to increase.
Dogs cannot sweat! They must cool themselves by panting. If your dog has a raspy pant it is having difficulty breathing and cooling itself. Keep him/ her is the AC. A cool water wet down may safe a dog in distress and get him to your vet!!

Of the first 48 dogs seized from the ‘Don’t Be a Bully’ rescue brought to the Baltimore County Animal Shelter, 15 died, and when animal control picked up 44 more from the same facility last week, a dozen of them suffered the same fate.

Summer is here and the days are hot and humid!
We have seen 4 heat strokes already this summer! Please leave you dogs home, they cannot tolerate the heat and humidity. They cannot sweat. If your dog gets overheated cool them off w a hose or get them in a stream or pool. Or better yet cool them off before they get over heated.
