April is Heartworm Awareness Month!

Is your dog or cat on heartworm prevention?

Dogs and cats can develop heartworm disease after a SINGLE bite from an infected mosquito. ONE bite is all it takes! Making sure that your fur babies are on heartworm protection year round is key to prevent this disease.

When should I test my dog?

A heartworm test is done annually during your vet check-up to ensure that prevention is working.

When should I start using prevention?

Puppies and kittens should be started on heartworm prevention as early as 8 weeks old, depending on the prevention.

What should I know about heartworm disease?

Heartworm disease is a very serious, progressive disease. The earlier it is detected, the better the chances the pet will recover. There are few, if any, early signs of disease when a dog or cat is infected with heartworms, so detecting their presence with a heartworm test is important. The good news, it is PREVENTABLE with consistent heartworm prevention!

Can my cat get heartworm disease?

Yes, even your indoor only feline friend can catch this disease. There is also no treatment, right now, for heartworm disease in cats - so prevention is the only way to protect them!
