Throughout the years, we have visited a particular mobile home park multiple times only to trap a handful of community cats. Spaying a few cats makes a difference in the lives of those cats. To change the mindset of the community the key is targeted trap-neuter-return. Once that is implemented you and others see huge successes; municipal shelters stop intaking kittens from that location, the health of the colony improves, fighting ceases, smells dissipate and the cats are not only spayed and neutered but are now vaccinated against diseases including rabies.

We are now working on the successes of this mobile home park. How you might ask, by being inclusive and working directly with members within its community. Never give up! To date, 22 adults have been trapped, neutered and returned, two litters of neonatal kittens are being properly cared for and we are just getting started!

Spay-abort. Why it’s necessary;

For various reasons, usually financial, many folks don’t want to spay/neuter outside cats, especially if they are pregnant. They plan on finding the kittens homes and if that fails, they will bring them to the shelter or give them to an animal rescue organization.

This puts a huge burden on shelters and rescue groups that are at maximum capacity, financially strapped (non-profit), unable to provide veterinary care or the time or number of volunteers needed to socialize kittens.

We encounter stories like this every day. When Tasha moved into her home the previous tenants left their cats. Tasha started feeding them but some days she had to share her dinner with the cats and sometimes there were no table scraps to share. She is now trying to feed 9 outside cats and 4 of them recently had litters under her house! Since last weeks rain storm, one mom moved part of her litter, and another litter drowned. Most likely, the survivors will not be socialized to humans and exposure to diseases and illnesses greatly increases.

Cats are prolific breeders, they can have 3-4 litters a year. Spaying a pregnant cat is a viable medical procedure. If in doubt, speak to a veterinarian and consider visiting your municipal animal shelter to see the vast numbers of unwanted animals during this overpopulation crisis.

Reading to your child not only improves their language and literacy skills, but it’s an important tool for helping children develop empathy. Kids in Acadiana have an array of good picks to choose from, including books from author Alysson Foti Bourque The Alycat Series & Leslie Helakoski https://www.helakoskibooks.com/

These two women have a lot in common; they are both from Acadiana, have strong family values, love CATS & DOGS, they support our spay/neuter mission and want children to develop into their best self. Through their children books they are paving the way for the next generation to learn empathy.

After ending our week with 239 spay/neuter surgeries, we spent our day off to partner with Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center for their "Operation Snip". This boots on the ground effort, is where Animal Control Officers and Wild Cat Foundation target areas within Lafayette Parish where spay/neuter is needed the most. A big shout out to Best Friends Animal Society for sponsoring this grant and Petco Love so all pets can be . For more information contact Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center– space is limited.

This sweet pit bull was originally owned by a breeder. His hopes for this one was to be a ‘stud’. Unbeknownst to us, the breeder had enough, carried his prize ‘stud’ to the dumpster, then tossed him in! That’s right folks, discarded him with the garbage then walked away.

That was a life changing moment for this pit! His present owner saw it happen, rescued him, and, named him SURVIVOR! He was neutered, vaccinated and given pain medication at ZERO cost to his owner thanks to Stand Up For Pits Foundation, Inc Show them some ❤️ by donating to them today! Your donation helps them, SAVE more velvet hippos!

Let’s talk about a cat’s estrus (heat) cycles. Your cat will quickly let you know when she’s having one. She may become extremely affectionate, demands more attention, meows frequently and drives most owners crazy. This behavior can begin as early as 4 months of age. A cat's estrus cycle can last 7-10 days, then stops for a short period of time (15-20 days), then begins again. It only stops when she becomes pregnant or is spayed. This year alone we have spayed 1,131 cats and 28% were in heat! Remember cats that are not spayed can have 3 to 4 litters a year!

And just like that 25 gorgeous pit and pit bull mixes were spayed/neutered today; and these were some BIG bullies! That’s right, these muscular, tail waggin’ bullies were super sweet and wanted every pet that was offered to them!

Each and every owner are extremely grateful; Angel Day 2024 gave them the opportunity to spay and neuter their pets while alleviating the financial burden. All of their procedures were fully covered by Stand UP for Pits Foundation.

Acadiana, please show some love to the Stand Up For Pits Foundation, Inc!

And just like that Angel Day 2024 began. 21 pit and pit mixes were spayed/neutered at our clinic today. Their owners are the lucky ones, not only did Stand Up For Pits Foundation, Inc incur the complete cost of their surgery, but they have some incredible pets!

We heard many stories about why their pets are so special and we wanted to share Nana’s story in particular. Nana is a working dog. She lives on a farm and oversees the livestock and the children that live on the farm. That’s right!! She cares and watches over all of them. Look out Border collies and Aussies, some Pit Bull Terriers are returning to their roots! Check the comments for more of Nana’s story….

Who would believe that prior to making no kill a priority, the save rate for cats and kittens in Lafayette Parish was only 9%. Today it is 92%! This is impressive and, in some cases, makes it easier to rationalize our choices especially if they are not in the best interest of the animal or the no kill movement. We love it when community members, business owners, and other non–profits help Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center and our community maintain its no kill status.

Acadiana Legal Service Corporation, Equal Justice for All, is one such non–profit. Not only do they strive to make certain there is equal justice for all regardless of income but they also understand the importance of trap, neuter, and return (TNR). The trip to the clinic when a feral/community cat is TNR’d is usually the first and only time that many of them will see a veterinarian, so medical necessities like vaccinations are also covered during their visit on top of the spay/neuter surgery. Consider making a donation to your favorite non–profit and TNR your neighborhood cat! Contact Wild Cat Foundation or your local TNR group for trapping advice.
