Max presented to VRC’s Neurology service after episodes of paralysis at home. Our board certified neurologist, Dr. Suzanne Rosen diagnoses Max with Atlantoaxial Instability, a condition in dogs in which there is abnormal movement in the neck, between the atlas (first cervical vertebra) and axis (second vertebra). This instability allows abnormal bending between the two bones, which causes compression of the spinal cord. In collaboration with our surgery and diagnostic imaging departments, surgery was performed on Max. This is done by stabilizing the first 2 vertebrae using screws and bone cement to hold them in a stable position. Following surgery Max had a post-operative CT which showed appropriate placement of the screws.
Now more than 1 month post-op, Max is doing great at home! “Max was only 6 months old when he had his first episode of paralysis and it was terrifying! After a couple of months, he had more frequent episodes and I found Dr. Rosen. We traveled from Long Island to Malvern for an MRI and after officially diagnosing his rare neck condition, Dr. Rosen and the amazing team at VRC fixed my puppy. He had surgery on his neck, which went perfectly! He is now fully recovered and has a long full, energetic life ahead of him. He’s the sweetest and most loving puppy and we couldn’t imagine his life being taken away from him! Thank you so much to Dr. Rosen for fixing my boy.”- Christina, Max’s mom.

Some pet owners may be nervous if anesthesia is needed for a surgery or procedure. However, anesthesia or sedation may be the best way for your pet to receive high-quality care without pain, stress, or discomfort.
☑️ Our team is trained to carefully select, dose, administer medications, and monitor your pet while they are at the hospital.
☑️ Some pain medications can last for 8-12 hours in dogs and up to 24 hours in cats. Your pet may act groggy and confused within this timeframe after their procedure.
☑️ Keep your pet from climbing, jumping, or running around for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Your doctor will instruct proper recovery time to prevent injury.
☑️ Call us if your pet isn’t eating within the anticipated timeframe, or if your pet vomits, develops diarrhea, or refuses to eat or drink for more than 12 hours.

Did you know we have a pilot on our team?! 🚁 Our board-certified veterinary dentist, Dr. Blazejewski, got his pilot’s license in 1992 and has been flying ever since. He built his own gyroplane in 2001. Every year on Father's Day, the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center in West Chester, PA puts on “FatherFest” and Dr. B. flies his gyroplane during the event. This year, the gyroplanes were the highlight of the event and Dr. B. was the only one who made it! He was the star of the show!
