🥶❄️😰It’s awfully cold out there and overnight the wind chill is going to get brutally low. Keep indoor/outdoor fur babies inside. Provide adequate shelter for outdoor pets if you cannot accommodate them inside. If possible, relocate them to a garage or shed with straw bedding and plenty of fresh water and food. If you park outside, check under the hood and in vehicle wheel wells before starting up as strays might find it the only warm place to sleep.

Make sure to use pet friendly ice melt around your home. If you do not use booties on your dog after winter outings, it’s a good idea to wipe paws with a warm damp cloth when you get home as certain ice melts can cause severe skin irritation and/or be harmful if ingested.

With the bitter temps we are experiencing, it’s probably best for you and your dog to hunker down inside, avoid walks, and only go out for the necessities. If you do take your dog out, make sure that they are protected from the elements and it’s only a quick outting.

Flea and tick season is far from over. The fleas are out there living their best life in the Fall, searching for their ideal winter vacation retreat, and your pet is looking like their lottery dream home. They want to move in and invite all of their extended family over for a non-stop party. Now is the worst time of year for fleas and ticks. They are cozy under the warm blanket of leaves on the ground. Temperatures are colder at night but still warm enough during the day for them to live and thrive. There are no more hot temperatures to possibly dry up the eggs that are out in the environment. We recommend keeping all pets, even indoor only cats, on flea and tick prevention until the second hard freeze. If we have a mild winter, keep them on it year round. We have several options for flea and tick prevention available in clinic and on our online store. For more information on how to keep your pets flea and tick free, click the link below.

It's that time of year to gobble til you wobble! We all consider our pets to be part of the family, and may even want them to join in on the holiday festivities, but make sure to take measures to ensure their safety.
🐶If you are having guests to your home, make sure that they are aware of your pets to avoid accidentally letting them out of the house.
🐱Pets that are more anxious or shy would be best behind a closed door in an area like a bedroom as they may be upset by all of the excitement, and their fight or flight instincts will be heightened. Turn on soothing music at a pleasing volume. Make sure they have water, food, litter box for kitties, and a comfortable place to rest.
🍗Avoid indulging your pet in table food, even during the holidays. Even if you have seen something advised as "pet friendly holiday food", many table foods can be toxic or cause severe GI upset for your pet.
🤮Keep on eye on the garbage and food left on counter tops. Many pets will look for any opportunity they can to try and sneak in a treat that may unknowingly cause them a costly trip to the vet or emergency clinic
🪪 Keep your pet's ID tags up to date and make sure your microchip information is up to date just incase they do get out and have an adventure. It's always a good idea to have a current photo of your pet readily available too.

Our History

Brewer Animal Hospital was founded in 1977 by Dr. Joseph Brewer, a long-time and esteemed Springfield veterinarian. It didn’t take long for this one-doctor practice to grow.

Dr. Thomas Thornburg joined Brewer in 1980 after graduating from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine and fulfilling his life-time dream of becoming a veterinarian. Dr. Thornburg had a special interest in reproductive medicine and is certified in canine reproductive techniques by International Canine Genetics. He retired in the summer of 2014. Dr. Evan Kirk joined Brewer Animal Hospital in 1990. Dr. Kirk is a Springfield native, a graduate of Springfield High School and he attended Lincoln Land Community College. Dr. Kirk graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in 1983, and was accepted into the U of I College of Veterinary Medicine graduating with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1987. After a stint in suburban St. Louis, Missouri and another in Sherman, Illinois. He joined the staff at Brewer in 1990. Dr. Kirk has a special interest in internal medicine, surgery, and is an excellent diagnostician. Dr. Rina Ward joined Brewer Animal Hospital in 1995. Dr. Ward, a native of Cuba, IL, received her bachelor’s degree from Illinois College in 1987, was accepted into the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine and received her doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1991. Dr. Ward has a special interest in exotic pets such as ferrets, rabbits, hedge hogs, chinchillas, rats and other small mammals. She is also very experienced with dogs and cats. Dr. Ward frequently attends exotic pet seminars to keep abreast of the latest techniques and knowledge. Dr. Sarah Kiley joined Brewer Animal Hospital in 2014 shortly after graduating from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Her interest in veterinary medicine began in her hometown of Shelbyvile, Illinois where she grew up working for Dr. John Brix at Brix Veterinary Service. She brings with her a few fresh approaches, as well as the previous knowledge she acquired working for Dr. Brix. Dr. Kiley has been an indespensible asset to our clinic since she joined our staff.

Dr. Kellie Rucker joined our staff in June 2019 after graduating from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Rucker is a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, College of Veterinary Medicine and is a native of Staunton, IL. She grew up riding and showing Paso Fino horses and still enjoys trail riding today. She jumps at the chance to do any outdoor activity, especially boating and camping. She has a special interest in surgery and internal medicine of dogs and cats. Dr. Rucker is being added as our 4th veterinarian, joining Dr. Kirk, Dr. Ward and Dr. Kiley to provide you with excellent, compassionate care for your pets.
