ICU technician, Chelsea, captured an excellent example of agglutination today. The top slide is normal blood in a smooth, even layer. The bottom slide is blood from a dog with an auto-immune disease called IMHA. Notice his blood cells are all stuck together in clumps. When they get stuck together, the body destroys them and pets can require blood transfusions to treat the resulting anemia. This test is called a Saline Agglutination Test and is a simple test that helps our ER doctors make a rapid diagnosis and quickly start treatment of IMHA.
Brachycephalic Airway Surgery
Dotty is a 14 week old Shar Pei puppy who got a nose job today! Brachycephalic (or "smushed face" breeds like bulldogs and pugs) are often born with teeny tiny nostrils and an elongated soft palate that makes breathing difficult. Dr. Zach Ricker used a laser to widen Dotty's nostrils and trim her soft palate this morning. The laser makes for a fast, bloodless, stitch-free and less painful procedure that heals in no time. Happy breathing, Dotty!
If you guessed that Bobby got his name for his stubby little tail, you were right! That thing never stops wagging!
Watch our Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Hodges, describe what a tumor on the heart looks like. This video shows an echocardiogram, or ultrasound of the heart, in a dog that had recurrent bleeding into the sac around the heart (pericardial effusion). This is a very common type of tumor in large breed dogs and it can be tricky to diagnose. The mass usually can't be seen on x-rays, so an ultrasound or CT exam is required to identify the source of the bleeding.
Our hospital housecat, Nova, enjoys a treat after saving a kitten's life by donating blood. Donating takes less than 5 minutes, and the mild sedative our kitties receive gives them the munchies afterwards. We're happy to oblige with a tasty snack. Thanks for helping us save lives, Nova! #BackstageAtOVS
