Tip of the week Wednesday. Horse urine can change color after being voided due to the presence of plant metabolites (pyrocatechines) in the urine that turn a red or orange color when mixed with oxygen. This can happen year around, but is especially noticeable in snow. Normal horse urine appears colorless to yellow to dark yellow when voided. If the urine appears red, brown, or orange as it is being voided that can indicate a serious problem. Bottom line, if horse urine is an abnormal color as it is being voided or you observe frequent urination or straining to urinate call your veterinarian immediately. If your horse is passing normal colored urine that turns red or orange in the snow, that is normal. Photo credit: Chad Martinson

Equine Anaplasmosis, another reason to hate Ticks!

Horse owners please be on the lookout for any signs of Anaplasmosis! We have had a large spike in the number of cases seen in our practice area. Anaplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by the bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum. It causes disease in all age horses and clinical signs can vary between horses. Signs include FEVER (102-105 F), lethargy, decreased appetite, limb swelling, reluctance to move, icterus and rarely ataxia. Treatment involves 3-5 days of intravenous antibiotics and anti inflammatories. Prognosis and recovery is excellent if the disease is diagnosed and treated quickly. Prevention relies on tick control. Please regularly check your horse for ticks and remove them! There is no vaccine currently available for anaplasmosis. If you notice any signs of this disease

A little bit about our story

Hey to you all!!! Just wanted to take a minute and thank you all for "liking" our page and supporting SEC. My name is Linnea Campbell, founder and owner of Serenity Equine Center. I thought it might be a good idea to take a minute and introduce myself and share a little bit about the services and products offered at SEC. First a little bit about me, I am a working-stay-at-home mom of 3, soon to be 4 boys, 6 and under. My family and I designed and built SEC from the ground up 6 years ago, we officially opened for business Oct. 1, 2012. The opportunity to be owning and operating such a facility has been a dream come true for me! Growing up in 4H, and showing in the local and national levels in the hunter over fences divisions I knew that I wanted to make horses my livelihood. My vision when we first opened for business, and still remains, is to provide the upmost care for horses and offer the best services and experiences possible to their owners, meanwhile, allowing horses to be what they are, a horse in as natural and safe of an environment as possible. I wanted a place where people could come to enjoy their 4-legged babies without having to worry about the daily care, feeding, barn cleaning, etc. that can take away from the quality time of actually getting to spend WITH the horse. I envisioned a "safe-haven" if you will, for all involved, humans and horses; I wanted to provide "serenity". Only being nearly 6 yrs into this industry I am still very new and still have a lot to learn. That being said we have evolved and grown quite a bit in the past short 6 years. I wanted a place where people could come LEARN, have this be a place of education and giving people the tools to further their riding experience and develop tools to increase communication, effectiveness, and overall improved horsemanship for the equine community in the tri-state region as well as surrounding areas. That goal has become a reality through all of the various clinics and events held here throughout the year. If anyone has interest to host a clinic please contact me to discuss further details on how you can go about having the clinician of your choice come to SEC and NWPA! Other services offered are full care only board, lessons, and training. Board includes daily stall cleaning, turnout, hay, grain, grass (when available), spacious locker in one of our 2 tack rooms, unlimited use of our indoor (81x204) or outdoor (115x220) arenas, access to the heated viewing/clubroom (with free wi-fi), along with several other amenities. I am always happy to schedule tours of the facility and answer any questions anyone may have about those services. In addition to horse care, riding, training, and education we have also begun to dabble in some retail business. We are currently offering a premuim pellet bedding (which we use for our stall bedding) called Easy Bedding. Available for purchase by the bag or by the pallet. This bedding has been a serious game changer for the amount of time and money spent doing the daily chores and barn cleaning. Please contact me for more info! I have some more plans and visions for in the future which I am excited to share when the time is right. In the mean time I just felt the need to share a little about what we are doing here and THANK YOU ALL to everyone who has been a part of the journey so far in any way!!! We are here to serve you, the equine community, thank you for the opportunity to do just that!
