Written with the British Equine Veterinary Association president Prof. Roger Smith, the chapter is focused on Charlotte's PhD topic 'Equine Tendon Physiology'. Great work Charlotte!

⭐️Thank you Thursday!⭐️
This 'thank you' comes from Bronwyn and her beautiful boy Roger. At 21, despite his challenges Roger is thriving under Bronwyns excellent care with the support of Breadstone vet Kate Rogers.

"I cannot thank B&W and especially Kate Rogers enough for all of her help over the last 4 years with Roger. At Christmas in 2020 Roger developed laminitis after sustaining a minor injury in the field. It developed very quickly and within 2 or 3 days he could barely walk, he was later diagnosed with EMS. After a few months of box rest, diet management and Kates advice I was able to get back on and start bringing him back into work.

A few months after this Roger tripped in the school and did his check ligament. This meant more time off and more restricted turnout but again with Kates advise, Roger came back into full work again. Roger then had a good few months in work and we even joined the riding club and got back out competing again.

Then just after Christmas 2023 Roger went very lame behind. Kate came out again (I think he secretly does these things so he can see her!) and we spent a few weeks trying to work out what the issue was and where it was coming from. He went up to the hospital for a full workup which showed he was lame in both back legs and his front right! It was isolated to his stifles behind and the scans showed it was arthritis. At 21 it wasn’t a surprise but I did think that this would mean retirement for him. His insulin levels were too high to be able to safely treat him with steroids so there was a lot of hard work of restricted diet, and walking hacking ahead to be able to do this.

After a few months we were able to medicate the worst leg which made a massive difference to how he felt already but we had just got to spring so we had to hold off on medicating the other hind leg. I very nearly retired Roger at this point because hacking is just not for me! But Kate had a bit of a pep talk with me and I carried on. He had his 2nd stifle medicated a few weeks ago and he is feeling amazing now and he is back ready to go out to riding club and get back out to do some dressage tests again!"

Specialist vet, Dr Veronica Roberts, who assesses horses for headshaking at the B&W Hospital has just had a research paper published which is part of a larger project to develop an objective measure (like a Fitbit) to measure severity, frequency and type of headshaking in horses. Most of the work for the research was done, with owner consent, using B&W Equine Hospital patients. Improving our ability to evaluate severity of shaking is important for animal welfare, as pain is often a cause. Furthermore, some of the data that was collected can contribute towards making a diagnosis. This work was presented at 2 international conferences and is now published in an international journal. The stud vets at our Willesley clinic found both an embryo and an unfertilised egg in one of the embryo flushes they performed at . The embryo was transfered into a recipient at and has resulted in a successful day 12 pregnancy.

**Success story alert!**
Breadstone vet Kate Rogers has been seeing the lovely Meg and her owner Kerry for several months now. Kerrys hard work has been rewarded with Meg looking great winning her classes at their recent local show - a testament to Kerrys hard work! Kerry had this to say:
"21 year old, Welsh X, Meg was diagnosed with Cushings and PSM following a severe attack of laminitis, in November 2023. A long road to recovery and change in management began. The now twice daily soaked nets for the whole herd, was rewarded last Sunday, when Miss Megan won the in-hand Veteran class and Best turned out at Almondsbury Horse Show! Tears of joy were shed on how far we have come, how wonderful she is looking, and how well she feeling under saddle. You have to celebrate the high days with these horses! Vet Kate Rogers has been a strong support and source of knowledge, it is great to have continuity with a vet that understands and listens to both you and your horse."

Your horse is eligible to take part if they are at least 10 years old and:

They have had a positive test result but have not yet started treatment (tested in last 2 weeks)

They have had a positive test result and started treatment within the last 2 weeks (tested in last 2 weeks)
OR
They have had a positive test result although no treatment is planned (tested in last 4 weeks)
OR
They have had a negative test result in the past 4 weeks

Congratulations to Therese de Souza, one of the Specialists at the B&W Equine Hospital who has had her research paper published following a study investigating the outcomes after synovial sepsis and risk factors for survival. The study was carried out at 10 large equine hospitals in the UK and is another example of the valuable research being carried out by our outstanding team of Specialists at the B&W Hospital 👏🏅🌟

National Receptionist Day is a time to celebrate and acknowledge the fantastic work that our receptionists and non-clinical support teams do to ensure top-notch care for you and your horse, and to keep B&W Equine Vets running seamlessly. As the first point of contact, our receptionists and administrative teams play a crucial and varied role, which includes answering your calls, managing the vet’s diaries, handling enquiries and repeat prescription requests, processing payments, booking appointments, and so much more. They also need to relate to and understand our clients, which is why they all have equine experience, with many of them being horse owners themselves.

Our wonderful nursing team, made up of Registered Veterinary Nurses, Student Nurses and Patient Care Assistants, work extremely hard around the clock to provide gold standard care to our patients and support to our vets. But did you know that a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) usually studies for 2 - 3 years for their qualification and once they are qualified, they are permitted to carry out certain procedures? They have such a huge and varied role, we'd be unable to function without them!

The B&W Equine Hospital is currently hiring for the position of head veterinary nurse. The ideal candidate for this role will be a hands-on leader who will actively participate in the management and training of our nursing team. We are looking for someone who is proactive, has a good sense of humor, and a forward-thinking approach. In addition, the successful candidate should have the ability to prioritize their work effectively and communicate regularly with the team.

The nursing team under your supervision will consist of seven registered veterinary nurses, three student veterinary nurses, and multiple patient care assistants. There are also opportunities to engage with other equine practices within the CVS equine division to advance equine nursing. This includes yearly meetings and CPD opportunities to develop both yourself and others.
