Drum roll, please... 🥁 We are thrilled to announce our Vets Now Pet of the Year award runners-up. Our second 2024 runner-up is Wilbur. 🐶

Wilbur has transformed his owner Lucy’s life after being paired with him two years ago. A rare form of vasculitis, Granulomatosis with Polyangitis (GPA), robbed Lucy of her hearing at the age of 17 and left her too scared to go out alone but Wilbur has given her the confidence to get back out into the world. 💙 StreetVet

After being found horrifically injured as a puppy it was feared that Sophia only had hours to live. Dedicated care helped her pull through and vet nurse Sarah was so touched she decided to adopt her and now she is a happy, playful three-legged dog adored by all that know her. 💗 StreetVet

A blood transfusion from a cat abandoned in a dog waste bin has saved the life of a kitten left at death's door by an infestation of fleas. 😰

11-month-old Persian cat Bertie (white) needed an immediate blood transfusion after being rushed to our Vets Now clinic in Gillingham.

With no stored supplies of cat blood available, a live transfusion was the only option. Our dedicated nurse, who had previously adopted Mr Hankey (black cat) when he was found abandoned, rushed home to bring him in for donation. Thankfully, his blood was a match! 🥰

A few weeks ago, Honey came to our Vets Now Belfast clinic as she was experiencing some abdominal pain. 😰

After thorough investigations, Honey underwent surgery to remove a portion of her bowel after it had perforated. Turns out, the culprit behind her abdominal pain was a sneaky squeaker toy she had swallowed, maybe some time ago! 😱 After a successful procedure to remove the toy, Honey's been bouncing back, and we're so glad to have helped her. 🙌❤️

Meet handsome Murphy! 🐾

Our Manchester Hospital team first met him at the age of two, when the cardiology team diagnosed him with a congenital heart condition. Despite facing challenges, including emergency chest surgery and later a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease, Murphy's resilience shines through.

Now, at seven years old, he's always thrilled to see them during his visits as much as they love to see him. 💖 Nothing can dampen Murphy's spirit; he's an absolute superstar and a much-loved visitor to the hospital.

Did you know that some fruits can be a refreshing treat for your dog on warmer days? 🍓🍌✨

Dogs can enjoy some fruits, but others are highly toxic to our furry friends, including grapes. Here are a few tasty fruits dogs can have in moderation. 🐶

⚠️ Remember to remove all seeds, pits, skin and rind before feeding your dog.

Meet this gorgeous goose who was brought into our Vets Now Pet Emergency Hospital Glasgow by the SSPCA recently after being shot with a crossbow. 😢 With the skilled assistance of our out-of-hours team, Nicole, our lead out-of-hours vet, successfully removed the arrow in a highly tricky procedure, including safely anaesthetising the brave bird.

Thanks to their expertise and dedication, the goose has made an astounding recovery and has been happily discharged into SSPCA's care, which has launched inquiries with the police to find out how this happened.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Nicole and our fantastic team, including Nicola, pictured here, for their unwavering commitment to saving lives. ❤️

Poor Appa was discovered on the roadside, fighting for breath with a fractured pelvis, hip, and femur, alongside severe nerve damage. Tragically, this occurred just as he was settling into a loving new home with Adam, who had kindly adopted him. 🥺

Adam rushed to our Vets Now Pet Emergency Hospital Manchester, where Appa underwent urgent surgery, including the insertion of a metal plate to mend his crushed pelvis. Despite efforts, his left hind leg couldn't be saved, but that hasn't stopped Appa. To everyone's surprise, he is back running and climbing as fast on three legs as he did on four! 🐱

Check out these dog-friendly veggies, which are safe and packed with essential nutrients. They can be enjoyed as an occasional treat, perfectly complementing your furry friend's balanced diet. ❤️

Here's how to prepare them safely 🐾

1️⃣ Wash thoroughly️!
2️⃣ Cut into bite-sized pieces, making it easier for your pet to digest.
3️⃣ Cook when necessary. While veggies like peppers are fine raw, others, such as beets and squash, should be cooked to improve digestibility.
4️⃣ Avoid seasoning; plain and simple is best!

Meet sweet three-year-old Marley who was a patient here at our Vets Now Bristol clinic 🏥

Anneka, Principal Vet Surgeon at Vets Now Bristol, said: "Marley presented to the clinic in July last year for a condition called Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). In Marley’s case he was unable to pass any urine, which can become immediately life threatening. Alongside Marley’s regular day time practice, his condition was managed for over a week until Marley went on to make a full recovery. Unfortunately this is a common condition in male, neutered cats and can be difficult to manage due to the multiple factors contributing to the condition such as diet, weight and stress factors."

This poor boy has been through a lot but is now safely back home with his family receiving plenty of TLC. ❤️🐱 We send Marley all our love and well wishes. ✨

If you have any concerns about your cat displaying unusual toileting habits, we recommend seeking veterinary advice immediately, or if it's out-of-hours, contact your nearest Vets Now clinic.

We’re aware of posts circulating about a wild pigeon that was put to sleep on welfare grounds last night by one of our experienced emergency vets.

Senior vet Anneka Phillips was on duty in our Bristol clinic when the injured pigeon was brought in by a member of the public.

Anneka, who has a wealth of experience working in both wildlife and avian veterinary medicine, said: “We are genuinely saddened about this situation and deeply upset about some of the accusations being made against our skilled and hard-working team around this case.

“We have a duty of care to every animal we look after and will always act in the best interests of our patients to ensure their welfare needs are met.“

She added: “Four veterinary surgeons on duty last night concluded that, unfortunately, this pigeon should be put to sleep to prevent it from further suffering.

“It had extensive damage to its wings and primary flight feathers, which meant it was highly unlikely to fly again. It was also extremely underweight, and all four vets felt it would suffer unduly had it returned to the wild.

“Although it can be the hardest decision for a veterinary team, euthanasia can be the kindest choice for an animal, especially when they’re in pain and suffering.

“Our teams work tirelessly night after night to save animals’ lives and we thank everyone for giving them the support and respect they deserve.”

Sir Philbert Squirrel the Earl of Hendrix (Hendrix for short) gave his owners quite the scare on Christmas Day.

Instead of excitedly running to greet them and get his breakfast like a kid excited for Santa, he was huddled in his hideaway, trembling and shallow breathing.

Hendrix's owners knew this could be life-threatening in a rabbit so rushed him to the Vets Now clinic in Bristol where he was treated for an intestinal blockage. After a lot of TLC he was able to go back home to spend Christmas evening with his owners.

We are so glad that Sir Philbert Squirrel the Earl of Hendrix has made a full recovery and we're sure he has one of the most unusual names we've ever come across. What's your pet's name and why did you choose it?
