Toxic Algae!!

This time of year, toxic algae start appearing in our waterway's toxic algae (also called cyanobacteria) is a naturally occurring algae that grows on the bottom of riverbeds attaching to rocks. The mats can detach and accumulate along the river edge, increasing the risk of contact producing toxins that can harm or even kill dogs.

Unfortunately, dogs love the musty smell of potentially toxic algae and are naturally drawn to investigating it. Toxic algae can appear thick dark brown or black mats that are velvety, slimy with a musty smell.

Common sign’s we see with dogs who have been in contact with toxic algae are

•panting
•lethargy
•muscle tremors
•twitching
•convulsions

If your dog is showing these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately. In extreme cases, death can occur 30 minutes after symptoms first appear.

**PET SAFETY DURING FIREWORKS SEASON**

Some of our pets suffer greatly during the fireworks season as the loud noises cause them to panic and stress. As their parents, it is our job to help them the best we can. If you know your pet can get easily stressed and fears loud noises, this information is for you!

The most effective way to help them is by preparing early. Most calming solutions take time to work which means we need to start using them long before fireworks begin to help our pets get accustomed. Using calming pheromones, supplements and/or food is a great way to help your pets feel safe. Creating an area in your house where your pets can hide will also give them that extra level of comfort. Check out our display in our reception area for ideas on how to make your own calm corner!

Sometimes over the counter products are not enough for some of our pets and they require prescribed medication to help. Please contact us if you would like to book a consultation with one of our vets to discuss what will work best for your furry friend. Alternatively, our friendly staff can answer any questions you may have regarding pet safety during the fireworks season!

As the long weekend approaches, we wanted to let you know we’re CLOSED for Kings Birthday Monday (3rd of June).

Wednesday (5th of June) we’re open our usual hours but are limited on consults, due to a team training on dental procedures to further expand our knowledge 📚🧐.
