VVC Midlothian's ER check-in process is changing! π¨
All clients will be asked to bring patients in need of emergency services directly to our hospital for check-in. Please call ahead or check our website for our most updated hours of operation. Our dedicated team will evaluate each pet upon their arrival. We will continue to prioritize patients based on the severity of their condition, and order of arrival, just like in the human ER.
The purpose of this change is to streamline the check-in process and to ensure that all patients receive the highest level of care. This change also allows us to see patients in a timelier manner by having patients in-hospital when the medical team is ready for your pet.
Our dedicated team is here for your family during your petβs unexpected and difficult time by providing quality, compassionate and professional care.
If you have any questions or if your pet requires emergency services, please call us at (804) 744-9800.

LVT Highlight! π Jerralynn placed her first arterial line today (assisted by anesthesiologist, Dr. Ross)! An arterial line, also known as an art-line or A-line, is a thin catheter that is inserted into an artery to monitor blood pressure and take blood samples. Anesthesiologists often use arterial lines in operating rooms and intensive care units (ICUs) to help them care for patients during complex surgeries and procedures.

This sweet young dachshund came to see us for chronic tearing from both eyes, aka epiphora. As you can see in the images, he has fine hairs sprouting from the eyelid margins in all 4 eyelids! This is called distichiasis, when eyelashes emerge from the meibomian gland openings that line the lids. Distichiasis is distinct from ectopic cilia, which is hair emerging from the underside of the eyelid. They can occur together or separately. These conditions are common in many breeds.
Sometimes it is not bothersome, but some dogs experience irritation and epiphora, or even corneal ulcers with distichia. There are numerous options to address the hairs, as simply plucking does not prevent recurrence. This pup underwent a cryoepilation procedure, meaning we froze the hair follicle through the backside of the eyelid to kill it, and then plucked the hairs. This permanently solves the problem and has a very brief recovery period with no sutures.
Driving is ruff, but someone's gotta get to the vet on time! πΎπ

This weekend, we want to remind you to keep your pets happy, healthy, and safe with these tips:
π½οΈ Many foods we enjoy on Labor Day Weekend such as onions, corn cobs, chocolate, grapes, alcohol, and more can be toxic to pets or pose a choking hazard.
βοΈ Dogs are susceptible to heat stroke. Make sure there is plenty of water and shade for your furry friends to keep cool.
πKeep pets away from the grill, grill tools, lighter fluid, and matches in order to avoid burns and hazardous chemical ingestion.
π Not only can fireworks frighten pets, but they can also cause severe burns. Keep your pets calm and safe in a quiet, sheltered, and escape-proof area.
If your pet should experience an emergency over the holiday weekend, contact Virginia Veterinary Centers at any of our locations:
π΄ Richmond: Open 24/7 - (804) 353-9000
