What you’re watching right now is Dr. Heather flush out sweet boy Jersey’s nasolacrimal duct! 👁️💉
He’s a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever who’s had issues with excess eye discharge and drainage. 🐶 We tested this system to ensure it is functioning, allowing us to rule out faulty tear drainage as a cause of the tearing. 🤯

Bentley’s paw-rents were startled when his eye became totally white and cloudy again following cataract surgery. 🐶 👀
When he came to us, we knew right away that he had a lipoid aqueous – which is an accumulation of fat in the front chamber of the eye due to high blood fat. 👩⚕️
This sweet boy is diabetic, which can cause elevated blood fat (especially after treats!) and is what caused this. 👁️
After treating the problem eye with anti-inflammatory medication, we were thrilled to see how clear Bentley’s eye was at his recheck!🥰
❤️Double tap if you love Bentley’s before and after!

If you have a retriever breed, you’ll want to keep reading! 🐶⤵️
This sweet 6-year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever came to us when her mom was concerned about the change in her eyes. 👀Her pupils were dilated and her eyes had a new green tint to them. We knew almost right away she was dealing with progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), as those are common early signs of the condition. 👁️
PRA tends to start around 4-6 years of age and often leads to blindness by ages 6-8. 😪Although we’re unable to stop blindness in dogs with PRA, we can slow the progression with the use of vitamins and supplements.💊
The most common breeds we see this in are:
1️⃣Retriever breeds
2️⃣Poodles
3️⃣Spaniels, among other breeds!
If you have concerns about your pet’s eyes, give us a call!👩⚕️With no vet referral needed, we pride ourselves on being a high quality, affordable option for pet parents! 🐾

Thinking about adopting a kitten? Animal Vision Center of VA and Billy the Kidden Rescue have partnered up to make sure you know what to look for with these common eye issues. 👀😺
👉🏼 Conjunctivitis: Look for redness, swelling, and discharge. It's like pink eye for kitties!
👉🏼Upper respiratory infections: Sneezing + watery eyes = a kitten cold. It’s easy to treat as long as you keep an eye on it!
👉🏼Corneal ulcers: These tiny scratches on the eye surface can cause squinting and tearing. We’ve seen this happen when kittens accidentally scratch themselves or each other during playtime. If you see discharge or they’re rubbing at their eye, it could be time to bring them in for a checkup!
Remember, a healthy kitten = bright, clear eyes. If you spot any of these, a quick vet visit can make all the difference! 🐱👀
As a thank you for supporting your local animal rescues, Animal Vision Center of VA offers a 20% discount on initial eye evaluations within the first month of adoption. Just be sure to let them know when booking your appointment!
PS Send this post to your cat-loving friends so they can take good care of their cat’s eyes. 😻
Did you know cataracts are the leading cause of vision impairment in animals? 👀
That’s what we saw this sweet girl Margo for. 🐶 When she came in, she could barely see and was really stressed out.😢
After her surgery, Margo’s vision improved – you’ll notice how much clearer her eyes are and most importantly how happy she looks!🫶
The only true way to remove cataracts is through surgery. Luckily, most dogs undergo this very successfully and have improved vision right away! 👁️

We all want our dogs to enjoy the summer with us, ☀️but during this time we start to see more cases of eye issues like conjunctivitis (pink eye) or corneal ulcers from the irritating effects of sand, grass and other wind-borne particles on the surface of the eye. 👀🍃
If you notice any redness or squinting after a day outdoors 🐶, here’s how you can administer relief at home 👁️:
1️⃣Use a sterile saline eye-irrigating solution to rinse out the eyes
2️⃣Try over-the-counter topical lubricating drop (Genteal Gel, Refresh PM, Blink, or Systane) to soothe the eyes
3️⃣If you notice an increase of rubbing the eyes or eye discharge, this could be a sign of allergies. You can try the above, or even an over-the counter topical antihistamine drop (Zaditor, Allaway, Naphcon-A, or Claritin-Eye)
‼️ Most importantly – if your pet does not get better almost immediately, or after a single day of trying these at-home remedies, seek care from your family veterinarian or a veterinary ophthalmologist, as eye conditions can progress very rapidly!👩⚕️
Save this post to have these solutions on hand and share with a fellow active-dog owner! 📲

A very common eye issue we see at @animalvisioncenterva is KCS (keratoconjunctivitis sicca), also known as dry eye disease! 👁️🐶
Dry eye is a condition in which lack of tear production leads to eye inflammation, discomfort and increased rates of other complications such as corneal ulcers, scarring of the eye and decreased vision. 👀
The main indicators your dog may have dry eye is the development of red, painful eyes with increased amounts of discharge. 🐾
Breeds that have a high predisposition to dry eye include:
➡️English Bulldogs
➡️West Highland White Terriers
➡️Lhasa Apsos
➡️Pugs
➡️Pekingese
➡️American Cocker Spaniel
➡️Yorkshire Terrier
➡️Shih Tzu
Share this with someone who owns one of these breeds so they can be aware! 🫶

Lilly was recently adopted from South Korea, and her new parents noticed the right side of her face wasn’t moving.🐶They gave us a visit and we found she had facial nerve paralysis, which left her unable to blink her right eye.👁️
There are many causes of facial nerve paralysis. It’s often seen in older dogs and is associated with conditions such as low thyroid, diabetes mellitus, chronic ear infections, trauma to the side of the head/neck, certain tumors, or occasionally occurs spontaneously with no apparent cause.👩⚕️
We treated this sweet girl with lubricating and anti-inflammatory drops to minimize the impact on her eye. When we saw her back two weeks later, she had come such a long way and was starting to blink on her right side again!
❤️Double tap to show Lilly some love!
