Molly from Sheba's Haven Rescue was in last week to get the rest of her mammary tumors removed and also some dental issues fixed. Still waiting on the biopsy results but she’s back home and doing great. There’s something special about this little pup (well she’s 7 years l old) that I’ve got a fondness for and makes me smile when she stops in at the clinic 🙂🐾

Turtles are still out and about. Please brake for turtles! 🐢

The survival of adult reproducing turtles is essential to the survivability of turtle populations. The survival of adult turtles is made more critical by the fact that less than 1% of all turtle eggs survive to sexual maturity, primarily a result of predation.

It can take upwards of 20 years for some species of turtle to reach sexual maturity and research in Algonquin Park has shown that it takes 1,400 eggs to produce one turtle that will reach sexual maturity. So, replacing just one lost adult turtle could take 59 years!

This means that it is difficult for turtles to replenish their diminishing populations – they are on the road to extinction.

All these difficulties have made the turtles path to survival an uphill and potentially dead end road. We need to do all we can to reverse the problem and help turtles in Ontario.

Friendly reminder with this weeks warm weather!

It’s important to keep your pets cool this summer. Here’s some tips to help:

- Avoid walking your pet in the middle of the day (in direct sunlight). Hot cement can burn their paws
- Keep water accessible for your pet at all times
- Never leave your pet in a hot car!

Fun ideas that will keep your pets cool:
-going for a swim
-indoor enrichment activities such as learning a new trick or playing with puzzle toys
-air conditioning when possible
-cooling vests and scarves

It’s truly depressing to hear this happened and even sadder that I’m shocked (but glad) this hasn’t happened before. As veterinary professionals, I get that your pets are everything to you. But they are not worth killing somebody over bc you disagree with the cost of health care. Get a grip and treat everyone with some respect and kindness. 🐾 💔

Our hearts go out to the Taylor family and Shively Animal Clinic & Hospital PSC, as they mourn the loss of 21 year old, Veterinary Technician, Trent Taylor.

On Sunday evening, Taylor was fatally shot by a client. Details are still being released, but from what has been reported, it appeared to be over a billing dispute. It is reported that Taylor was protecting his mother and his 16 year old brother, who both were also employed at the clinic, along with other staff members who were being assaulted.

The veterinary profession is in pain. Although we sincerely want what is best for your pets, and will make every effort, there are some things that we simply cannot do.
Being kind costs nothing, but being insensitive and cruel claims lives.
