Cats are masters at hiding signs of pain and disease. The signs of pain may be subtle because cats hide signs of discomfort and illness which could make them appear vulnerable to their enemies. Learn more at https://bit.ly/4c0rKxD.

This week’s senior spotlight is on sweet boy Norton, aka Norty! He is 13 years old and has hyperthyroidism which is one of the more common diseases we see in senior cats. He is always so good for his checkups and bloodwork. Thankfully this disease is treatable and we are happy to report that Norton’s thyroid level is in back in the normal range and he is feeling more like himself again:)

This is how we take blood from our kitty patients. We find that this type of minimal restraint as well as taking it from a back leg, really reduces the stress of the whole experience. Staying away from the kitty’s face allows for their owner to be right there next to them offering comforting words of support and reassurance. In most cases this is all the restraint we need but there are some that feel more secure by being wrapped up in a towel. But we never need to use muzzles or heavy leather gloves. The star of our video is 12 year old Cole who is a diabetic and has to put up with a lot of bloodwork. How good is he eh? Great job Cole! 👏❤️🐈‍⬛

Like with people, diseases and conditions can arise in cats as they age. Common illnesses include diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and hyperthyroidism. In the case of hyperthyroidism, this disease is caused by an overproduction of two thyroid hormones, T3 and T4.

This excess of hormones can cause additional complications for your cat, including heart disease, high blood pressure (hypertension), and retinal bleeding or detachment. Learn more about feline hyperthyroidism, including signs and treatment options, in our blog: https://brnw.ch/21wON8L

This week’s senior cat spotlight is on 15 year old Chester! This sweet green eyed boy came in for his senior checkup and bloodwork and even though his mum didn’t notice anything was off with him, his bloodwork came back showing moderately advanced kidney disease. That is so typical of cats…not showing anything is amiss! Thankfully there are still things we can do to support him and help him feel better and have a good quality of life! So far he is enjoying the kidney diet in tuna flavour only..cause cats are particular as we know! 🧡🐾🐟

When it comes to affection, most cats prefer to be touched on the head and neck. Your cat may become upset and even aggressive when attempting to touch other areas. Learn more about how to handle your cat at https://bit.ly/3KnihFo.
